High school is one of, of not the, most pivotal moments in any person’s life. What the student does and how he or she acts in high school determine, for the most part, what they are going to do for the rest of their lives. One way to put themselves on a positive path for school is to sign up and attend after school clubs and sports. These activities and hobbies can either be a good way to socialize with their classmates or, put them on their path to their ideal career path. One of the biggest, and most important, reasons to get involved in extracurricular activities is that it could set the student on a path to their future. The best example of this is students getting involved in high school sports. High school sports can be the best …show more content…
However, there is a smorgasbord of other activities available at many schools, especially for those who are athletically inclined. One of these activities is getting involved with the student band and/or choir. Although music is fun for those who can sing and are musically inclined, it can also be very beneficial for those who believe they are tone deaf. According to Mary Luehrisen of the National Association of Music Merchants, “A music-rich experience for singing, listening and moving is really bringing a very serious benefit to children as they progress into more formal learning (Luehrisen, PBS.)” To explain what Mary is saying, even if a child does not want to go into a musical career, learning how to do basic musical techniques, such as focus, multitasking, and key memorization can help every student along as they go into more advanced learning throughout high school, college, and even in their jobs if that task requires of it. Introducing a student into a subject, such as music, can open their minds to something that they did not know they had an interest for. If a student of any age spends their entire lives with only doing the core subjects, they might not end up doing something they enjoy. Just like what is stated above about athleticism, a student could be a great singer, guitarist, or percussionist but, if they never sign up or just do not put in …show more content…
Although most people associate with just acting and theatre, it also includes dance, opera, public speaking, and even some oddball hobbies such as illusion and puppetry. One of the biggest reasons to get involved within the preforming arts is they will help with students’ ability to publically speak. No matter what career path any person chooses to go down they will at one point or another are going to have to get up in front of a group of people, whether it be ten or one thousand and ten, and speak. A blogger by the name of Juliette Sivertsen for the Washington Christian Academy says “A child must learn how to present him or herself in front of an audience, be it big or small… Participation in the arts allows them to grow their self-esteem and self-confidence, developing poise and learning to overcome anxieties.(Sivertsen)” If any student is having trouble getting out of their shell, theatre is one of the best ways to get anyone to open up and be more confident in who they are and what they are capable of doing. In addition, if a student has any interest in politics, either student body or working with the capitol, public speaking classes such as speech and debate can help them out with their ability to argue with the opposing
One extracurricular activity that I am very passionate about would be the FFA. FFA has taught me so many things and it has brought me so many places. I 've learned how to be a great speaker from different events my advisor has challenged me to do. Public speaking has taken me so many places and I have attributed most of my success to FFA. When I was a freshmen I competed and received gold in the creed speaking competition. As a sophomore, I tried extemporaneous speaking and received a gold for that as well. As a junior I really wanted to challenge myself so I took up agricultural sales as my winter career development experience. I ended up being recognized as the state runner up individual agriculture salesman as well as the 15th best agricultural sales man in the nation. Now as a senior, I have been going around speaking at different school board meetings, advocating
Once this is accomplished, students gain personal pride in achieving this new skill. Music programs offer lots of chances for students to develop new talents, whether that is playing an instrument or singing a song. “Music programs in public schools help to foster a student’s sense of pride and self-confidence” (Hoffman 1), and with this newfound pride, students will develop more experience in other areas, like working with others and communicating with different people. Music plays an active role in student’s lives, and as core subject grades begin to rise, “music education remains a key component in a student’s academic success and in positive social and emotional growth” (Hoffman 1). Music forms dignity in a students abilities, offering to give the students a chance to develop their communication and social skills in a safe environment, and give themselves positive feelings about their accomplishments. Without music programs in schools, students will have less pride in their abilities and will not let them gain that safe environment to achieve these experiences with
Music education is important for several different reasons. Music is a very valuable resource for students and teachers alike. Research has shown that musical study improves a child's early cognitive development, basic math and reading abilities, SAT scores, ability to work in teams, as well as spatial reasoning skills (VH1, 2003, para4). Music helps students to achieve in areas of intelligence. “Feis, Revecz, the Pannenborgs, Miller, and others are unanimous in finding that musicality and high intelligence go together” (Mursell & Glenn, 1931, p. 20). Studies have shown that preschool children taught with music and songs have an average 10 to 20 points over those without, and by the age of 15 have higher reading and math skills. Another study showed that students that had taken a music appreciation class scored 46 points higher on the math portion of the SAT, and students who had music performance experiences scored 39 points higher than students without any music experience (Harvey, 1997, para13). Music impacts most other areas of learning. “The area holding the greatest prospects for transfer from music appears to be language arts.” (Hoffer, 1983, p. 46) It has been said that music helps concentration during reading. Music is an affective memory aide, because of its use of rhythm, rhyme and melody. Music for young children helps them to learn language because of the rhythms and patterns involved in learning the songs. The involvement of music in education can help to develop oral language skills, listening skills, and an increased vocabulary. Music can help the comprehension of language and basic facts (Dobbs, 1990, 341, 342).
As a young lady graduating from The Dalles Whatonka High School I think it’s important to be involved in as many activity’s as possible. Throughout my high school years I have been involved in many school activities and comities such as student government. I have always had an interest in athletics and played sports. These leadership and athletic roles have tough me skills that will last me a lifetime.
High school can be a very terrifying and a frustrating place to cope with. Students have to worry about fitting in and finding somewhere they truly belong. In order to find that place of belonging students can join clubs and interact with other students with the same interests as them. Clubs help students not only make lifelong friendships, but also develop skills they can take with them throughout their life and career. Although many high school clubs have proved to be a good experience in a student’s high school career, The National FFA Organization (FFA) serves many great purposes for students making it the most effective high school club because it develops student’s potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success.
The first benefit of giving a child an instrument is the success in society. “Researchers have found that children involved with music education are more likely to graduate from high school and attend college, and are less likely to be involved with gangs and substance abuse,” says VH1. Music is apart of everyday culture in America. It is used for “ideas and ideals,” (MENC) and the values are accounted for in a number of places. “Secondary students who participated in band or orchestra reported the lowest lifetime and current use of all substances (alcohol, tobacco, illicit drugs).”-Texas Commission on drug and alcohol abuse report. VH1 has also done research, and found that a “students involvement in their school music program is crucial to a complete education. Musical Study, develops critical thinking and self discipline skill, improves a child’s early cognitive development, basic math and reading abilities, self-esteem, SAT scores, ability to work in teams, spatial reasoning skills, and school attendance.”
Gould writes that “Leading youth development experts contend that one of the potential benefits of sports participation is the development of initiative or the ability to set and go after goals.” High school sports help kids to learn how to set and go after goals; an important lesson for every stage in their lives. Gould also states that the “National Federation of State High School Activity Associations indicates that [high school sports] promote ‘participation and sportsmanship’” (Are High School Sports Good For Kids?). In addition to setting and achieving goals, school sports develop participation and sportsmanship and positively build character in children. Overall, along with helping kids become more sociable, high school sports promote goal setting, participation, and sportsmanship in
Overall, this article is most useful as inspiration for students to participate in extracurricular and community activities. It can be used to support why school organizations are beneficial; however the informal tone may weaken the article's effectiveness. This article can also support students' character development outside the classroom due
Teaching live theatre throughout any level of schooling is valuable to students because they will learn or strengthen valuable skills that will ensure their brains are working efficiently. “One of the most obvious benefits of performing arts is the development of skills in self-presentation. A child must learn how to present him or herself in front of an audience, be it big or small. They develop the ability to converse with adults in a mature manner. Participation in the arts allows them to grow their self-esteem and self-confidence, developing poise and learning to overcome anxieties” (Sivertsen). Students do not get very many opportunities to present themselves in front of an audience other than a possible speech or two in an English class. By participating in a theatre class, a student will perform numerous times in front of their peers and adults which will significantly help them become more confident and grow their self-esteem. Along with performing in front of an audience, during rehearsal
I 'm involved in numerous extracurricular activities that will help me achieve my goals. For example, I am the current treasurer of (FBLA) The Future Business Leaders of America, Member of (DECA) it 's an international association for marketing that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in finance, hospitality and management. Additionally, I am an active member with Upstanders, a club that stands up against bullying and hate; (ASA) The African Student Association and the National Art Honor Society. I am also on the football and track teams. Track is a very competitive sport; it teaches me to endure and prepare me for the competitive real world. All of these extra-curricular activities are preparing me for future obstacles on my collegiate
Over the past decade, high school students have not been partaking in extracurricular activities. Some believe the reason has mostly to do with the development of easily accessible video games. Those who have previously taken part in a sport in high school have said that more students should take part in sports. Some believe they have strong reasons that students should do sports. These reasons include physical, mental, and life skills, along with some lesser ones.
Do extra-curricular activities have a positive or negative effect on a student’s academic performance? If they do, then why do schools take activities away from students at the first sign of academic troubles? If they are scientifically proven to be positive, then why are they not curricular rather than extra curricular? There are numerous influences that impact the academic performance of a student other than after school activities. However, this study will focus on the effect of extra curricular activities on academic performances. In many cases, participation in extra curricular activities positively influences attendance and connection to school. This study will investigate the impact of extra curricular activities that require a daily commitment over an extended period of time, greater than a month. Athletics is the dominant after school activity that requires a daily commitment; therefore, this study will involve student athletes as well as students who are involved in other extra curricular activities. Another reason why student athletes will be a large part of this study is that there may be a correlation between the skills necessary to succeed in athletics and academics (American Sports Institute, 1991).
Do you participate in extracurricular activities in high school? Lots of activities help students to grow into an adult and get ready for the real world. Activities, such as football, are a great way to work as a team and grind for a common goal. To work hard everyday to get what you want and to strive for greatness. Football improves student's physical body, their mental toughness, and the ability to work with a team to reach a goal.
Imagine walking across the stage in just a few years from now. Having thousands of eyes pointed at you as you take that emotional walk to finally receive your high school diploma. After a few years when you have graduated high school and started life, you're going to look back and think, what have I accomplished so far? Extracurricular activities can be very beneficial for students now, and those in the future as well. They can allow you to feel like you have accomplished something while in school. Extracurricular activities are important because they can benefit a student through personal, educational, and even social means. It is a great idea to get more students involved in extracurricular activities and parents should begin to give their kids a little push to get them more involved.
I always had something to do, and I enjoyed staying busy. Participating helped me find a place in school. Participating in a big school gives you a new group of friends. Perry is not very big, so everyone that I was on a team with, I already knew. Doing all of the extra curricular activities that I did, really helped me develop strong emotional bonds with many people that I knew.
