According to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), out of the fifteen million high school students across the United States, eight million of them play a sport. (Probability of Competing). However, San Diego County is considering whether or not to keep these sports. This is outrageous. Sports have a great number of positive effects on children that can help them not only for the present, but also for the future. Because of the social, psychological, and educational benefits, high school sports should not be abolished in San Diego County. One important reason that high school sports should be kept in San Diego County is the social benefits. According to Katie Couric, a study from the University of Alberta found that the loneliest kids are the ones who do not play sports (Notebook: Kids and Sports). High school sports can help kids be more social and make friends. Not only can sports help increase sociability in children, but it can also build character. Amanda Ripley argues in The Atlantic in her article “The Case Against High School Sports”, that the United States place too much attention on sports rather than academics. Ripley argues that sports programs at schools should be reduced, maybe even cut out completely. She states that there are a lot of countries that outperform America on international tests, and it is because they put more of their emphasis on academics, where the United States puts more of an emphasis on athletics. Participation in sports has proven to increase self-discipline and self-esteem, and can teach athletes to learn from their mistakes and move on (Issitt). Athletes playing team sports also develop the ability to work well with others and use teamwork in their everyday lives. Teammates form relationships that are strengthened over a common passion and goal. These relationships can last long after high school is over (Chen). These social skills translate into better communication used with an athlete’s family, peers, and in the community. Likewise, “A 2006 study in Maryland found that student athletes are 15 percent more likely than non athletes to be involved in their communities and to take the time for civic engagements, including participating in voting and volunteer activities” (Issitt). The same study also concluded that athletes are far more likely to be comfortable with public speaking than non-athletes. Participating in a sport at an early age can be essential to the overall growth process during a child’s upbringing. Whether the participation is through some sort of organized league or just getting together amongst friends and playing, the lessons learned from this can help teach these kids and provide a positive message to them as they develop. There is a certain point, however, when organized sports can hinder progress, which is when adults get too involved and forget about the underlying reason to why they are helping. While adult involvement is necessary, adult involvement can sometimes send the wrong message to children when they try to make participation become more than just about fun and learning. According to Coakley (2009), “organized sports are worth the effort put forth by adults, as long as they do what is in the best interest of their children and put that thought ahead of their own agenda” (Coakley, p. 151). This is a valid argument because once adults put themselves in front of the children and their values, it needs to be re-evaluated as to why they first got involved in the beginning. Partaking in organized sport and activity from a young age can be beneficial to the overall development of children, as long as decisions actions are made in the best interest of the children and not stemming from ulterior motives of adults.
Many schools don’t support the need of sports in sixth grade which has some negative and positive factors to it. Sports affect many students in a positive way like me; it brings joy to our faces. Today, sixth graders have engaged in sports in non-school, but community sports because students aren’t allowed to get involved in school functioned sports. Fort Bend ISD has banned sixth graders to be involved in any such sport because how “young” they are. I consider FBISD should allow sixth graders having sports.Quite a few students enjoy being part of a team, learning, being physically active. While it is the view of those sports may distract students from academics allowing them to participate in school functions sports will benefit to get better grades, build character, and create anthecentive for exercise.
At the end of each year there is a significant amount of money spent on athletic programs, which would be reduced for school districts if sports were cancelled. In the article “Should Your School Get Rid of Sports?” Amanda Ripley states that “by suspending sports, the superintendent of Premont High School, realized the district could save $150,000 in one year,” this is because “no one realizes their actual cost” (11). Ripley goes on to state that “yes, even though there are concessions at games to help with the cost, there is rarely enough to cover the massive amount spent to begin with” (11). This shows that there is way more money spent on athletic programs than there should be. This is important because if the extracurricular activities are cut, more money can be saved for schools and can be used for academic purposes.

Sports have become very popular over past years and it seems like nobody really joins the sport knowing the true benefits coming from these sports. After all, most people do watch sports on tv more than reality shows or movies.
