When I was in early elementary school, whenever asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I always answered with absolute certainty; “I’m going to be half zookeeper, half nature explorer!” This was never an answer that surprised anyone, considering the fact that I spent most of my days in the pastures behind my house, typically with mud matted into my hair, searching for anything that would catch my interest such as snakes, rocks, or flowers. Twelve years later and few things have changed, besides maybe the fact that I’ve finally learned how to keep the mud out of my hair. I still spend most of my free time outdoors. I enjoy gardening, kayaking, and hiking at local state parks. And although I now realize the impracticalities of making a career out of part-time zookeeping and nature exploring, I now have ambitions to become a wildlife biologist, so I still am picking an environmental career path too. Next year, I will be attending Iowa State University to major in Animal Ecology with a minor in Forestry. If awarded to me, I hope to use the Byers Scholarship to help cover the cost of tuition so that I can experience all that Iowa State has to offer. I am paying for my education on my own; so I have tried to help alleviate the costs by putting most of my earnings from my part-time job into a savings account …show more content…
I have earned good grades while taking a lot of STEM-based coursework to prepare me for my classes in college. I also have participated in our school’s Lakeside Lab program, a biannual, weekend-long trip that our school takes to the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory in which we gain hands-on science experience. In addition, I have attended the Lakeside Laboratory’s high school summer camps; Ecogirl, an environmental science summer camp for girls; and have participated in the Envirothon competition. All these programs gave me valuable experience that can help me in my future
I, Hope Turnbull, am a Senior of Stockton High School in Stockton Kansas. My plans consist of attending North Central Kansas Technical College starting Fall 2016, where I want to begin my study of nursing. Due to me having all of my general education courses finished upon my college arrival, I have been accepted into the first year Nursing Program (LPN). I believe that I deserve this scholarship due to me excelling in my education at a very young age. My grades are earned as A’s and B’s in school.
As a young lady graduating from The Dalles Whatonka High School I think it’s important to be involved in as many activity’s as possible. Throughout my high school years I have been involved in many school activities and comities such as student government. I have always had an interest in athletics and played sports. These leadership and athletic roles have tough me skills that will last me a lifetime.
As you know, the cost of higher education has steadily risen through the years and students are going into increasingly more debt to finance their education. Furthermore, most students must maintain a job to defray the cost of living, especially if their family can not help them monetarily.
Speed limit signs are posted on every road in this country, and 80% of car crashes in the US involve a lack of adherence to the speed limit, but most drivers, teens included, don’t find them to be important. More often than not, speed limits are seen as “guidelines” rather than rules. This mistake, although common, can mean the difference between life and death.
As a merit badge counselor in the ecology area, I taught classes including landscape architecture, animal studies, forestry, and environmental science.
Throughout my childhood I have been filled with the wonder of the various elements encountered on my various adventures. With a degree in Environmental Science and Policy, I will be able to both better understand the outdoors I enjoy spending so much time around, as well as delve into the world of environmental policy. During my four years in Key’s Upper School, I have attended over twenty-five outdoor education trips as both a student and a faculty member, so I feel as though my hands on experience with the science and outdoors part of this degree have been bolstered already. I hope to gain and earn more experience on the policy side however, as I have had limited opportunities due to my constant involvement in the outdoor education program as a wilderness peer leader. Outside of the Key Upper School Environmental Awareness activity that I participated in during my senior year, I have spent little time participating or learning about environmental policy, and I hope to increase my knowledge of the subject with a degree in Environmental Science and
When I first heard about Project WILD, I thought it would be an excellent professional event to attend. Project WILD is a program taught by Indiana’s DNR, and educates teachers and other members of the community about how to teach lessons based around the environment, nature, and animals. The event was hosted in the education building at IUPUI and was put on by the education fraternity at IUPUI. Throughout the day, we learned how to teach lessons about wildlife and the environment to our students. We even got the opportunity to test our teaching skills out and co teach a lesson to the rest of the group.
Over the years I have been attending college I have had several experiences that involve environmental science and the work that Huxley College has undertaken. My first experience and most fulfilling experience would have to be working on the organic farm Raising Cane Ranch. The second experience would be participating in the Comparative Genomics labs at Everett Community College (EvCC). In both experiences I worked with environmental science majors and biology doctrines, to use science and new environmental techniques to help improve the quality of our environment. After a month of being out of the military I enrolled in EvCC, into the environmental science program.
By obtaining at least a bachelors degree in environmental science or another natural science area, students are equipped with the necessary knowledge to enter the work force. The course work in these four year programs is focused on biology, chemistry, physics, and geology (United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics sec 4). A career in this field studies possible methods in dealing with the long-term issues of human and all other species’ existences. Because of the current environmental and renewable energy crisis, there is a tremendous push for research in conservation of the planet by state and national governments.
My interest in ecology started at an early age, when my father used to take me canoeing through the swamps of Louisiana, teaching me the names of the plants and animals as we went. When I was older, my father grew interested in the fire ecology that maintained the longleaf pine savannas that used to stretch across the South. He began doing experimental controlled burns on plots of forest on our property, and I would always help him out (the experiments were successful, by the way; native species returned and invasive species were reduced). Eventually, we both became certified Prescribed Burn Land Managers, and we continued to restore our forests until I left for college. My father passed his love of nature and sciences on to me, and I feel
A global citizen is that who is willing to use its voice and knowledge to make a change. No one would ever be able to make a change in just one day, it is something that takes time and devotion. I’m really interested in diversity and I’m seeking to what is my role is as a world citizen. The fact that I’m searching for an international education is the proof of my desire to establish myself as a global citizen and my interest in the world issues.
This mainly focuses on one particular animal and the behavior in their natural habitat. When someone wants to become an Environmental Scientist they first have to have a bachelor`s degree in any natural science, this degree will get you an entry in the field. You can have any type of natural science such as: biology, chemistry, or geosciences. If you want to advance in this particular job you might want to work on getting a master`s degree in any natural science and you could also get a doctoral degree if you want to do college teaching or some research positions require this type of degree. Some people but not most that wo...
My two career goals, which are actually interconnected, are to conduct research that will benefit endangered species and to educate people in both developed and developing countries about sustainable living practices. Ideally, I would like to gain employment at a non-profit institute that combines research, education, and humanitarian work in a holistic approach to end human and animal suffering. In addition, I desire to travel to various ecological research sites around the world so that I can both carry out fieldwork and teach local fisherman, farmers, and children about the importance of sustainable development. The application of proper environmental stewardship not only benefits threatened habitats, but it also facilitates more efficient harvesting and has long-term benefits for workers and their
Attending symposiums and giving presentations around the nation that pertain to health and science enforce my scientific insight. I attended the California Minority Youth Environmental Training Institute during my sophomore year of high school because I am highly interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematic (STEM) education. This gave me the chance to travel to Camarillo, California and improve my scientific knowledge and collaborate with people of similar interests and
Environmental studies is a paramount field to focus on for both the present day and the future. This field of studies pertains to all people, animals, plants, and biomes around the world. Environmental Studying is important because it is only by understands the environmental processes that we can begin to take the steps necessary to correct the on-going damage that is occurring, and ultimately protect and sustain life on the planet. Unless steps are taken to try and abate and control environmental problems, which are often human-generated or exacerbated, then the environmental that we live in will continue to deteriorate. There is no life without protecting the source that sustains us. Even though I have only been alive for seventeen years, it has been long enough to see many negative environmental changes. Since I was born that population has grown by over one billion people causing deforestation, loss of wildlife, increased pollution to both air and water, and even superbugs. However, I have also been able to see extremely positive results such as an increase in the research and implementation of renewable resources. The reason I am so motivated to study environmental science is because I know that change is possible. Those who study environmental science and study have the ability to help reduce, and possible reserve, some of the damage that has been done to the environment while at the same time, helping to advance the well-being of our fellow humans.
