Every leader wants to identify with a success story of an organization. The urge to succeed drives leaders to replicate other companies’ success strategies. However, they fail to factor failures. Innovative organizations celebrate failures than condemning them. In a hidden paradox, these companies reward failures. The strategy makes an innovation path dynamic. In pursuit of fixing errors, employees make important discoveries that mould successful companies. Therefore, if a leader wants to replicate a leadership success, failures should be factored.
There have been countless books, lectures, and and trainings, and retreats constructed around the idea of cultivating leadership in an individual. However, cultivating individuals’ ability to follow great leadership has received far less attention. Who are these people leading if each person within an organization is being trained to be a leader? The word follower has negative connotations, evoking the images of a weak, uncreative, milquetoast personality. However, Jimmy Collins, in his book, “Creative Followership: In the Shadow of Greatness”, suggests that the ability to be led brings as much creativity, consciousness, and indeed leadership to an organization or team as the leader himself. Great followership is a reflection of great leadership. In this, the follower is just as important as the leader in the relationship. Many great leaders have asserted that a leader with even a modicum of understanding of what drives their subordinates can take their organization to previously undreamt-of heights in creativity and productivity. Collins does not disabuse us of this notion, he does however add that the follower is indispensable agent in this interplay between leader and follower.
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. Compassion and empathy inspire change in a society whether it be changing individual’s usual way of thinking, uniting, or accepting those who are different. Individuals can use their compassion for something to cause a change in someone else’s thought of that thing. Several people have used empathy to bring others feelings together. People can also use empathy to show others to have acceptance towards ones who may not be like themselves.
For example, as an overseer you watch each individual child that is in your care, I felt disturbed when a child’s progress is different than the other children. This made me wonder whether this particular child’s development is ordinary or if the child may have an incapacity that is influencing his advancement and learning. Empathy is the most fundamental trait of human beings. The world runs on the shared understanding of suffering and happiness. Empathy helps human beings create a safe and nurturing society because it promotes the understanding of needs of others. According to me, empathy is the most important quality of a leader. Hence, it is my belief that every single person has a potential to be a leader as long as she/he is able to relate to others and their situations.
According to the Forbes, it said that “Most American are unhappy at the work” It did survey to Americans about satisfaction of work, and as a result, 52.3 percent of them answered they were not satisfied to jobs. Interestingly, the rate of unhappiness of job has continuously increased for several decades. Around 1980, 61.1 percent of Americans workers said they loved their jobs. However, after 30 years, 2010, survey indicated that only 42.6 percent of them were satisfied in their works. Decreasing happiness of jobs means increasing dissatisfaction of jobs. Then, why are some people unhappy in their work? The answer might be that they are not cut out for this work and cannot find interested to the job. Therefore, some Americans are unhappy in their jobs for three reasons which are mismatched career, health problems, and no personal life.
Although there are many outstanding, albeit necessary qualities of a good leader, it is the leader’s beliefs in which greatness is given its first breath, fostered by action, and spread throughout the institution. A great leader believes in encouraging, not destroying; in setting the precedence instead of yielding to prominence ; in collaboration, not division; in giving, not taking; and in having high standards and volunteering to be the first of many to be held to them. A great leader does not take advantage of the people being lead, but instead, creates an advantage for the people by giving them the opportunities to lead. Only when people take ownership of an institution will passion be cultivated, action be taken, and greatness be achieved.
Empathy is the ability to imagine yourself in someone else’s position and to intuit what that person is feeling (Pink, 2006). Rather than simply sympathizing, empathy enables us to put ourselves into the shoes of another and actually feel what they are feeling. This vicarious sense allows us to better understand people and their experiences. Understanding others and their experiences is vital in education. Whether dealing with different races, religions, sexes, etc., empathy provides us with an avenue to widespread understanding of others that even language cannot.
The dictionary definition of Empathy is the psychological identification with or vicarious experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and attitudes of others. Simply put, empathy is the ability to step into someone else’s shoes, be aware of their feelings and understand their needs. In the workplace, empathy can show a deep respect for co-workers and show that you care, as opposed to just going by rules and regulations. An empathic leadership style can make everyone feel like a team and increase productivity, morale and loyalty. Empathy is a powerful tool in the leadership belt of a well-liked and respected executive (Pressley, 2012).
It was once a common belief that if employees worked hard, showed up on time and followed the rules that they would be guaranteed a job for life. However, over the last decade there have been changes in the workplace. There are two main causes for this change. The changes in the work place in the twenty-first century are being caused by advancements in technology and expansions in globalization through the Internet.
