Empathy is the most fundamental trait of human beings. The world runs on the shared understanding of suffering and happiness. Empathy helps human beings create a safe and nurturing society because it promotes the understanding of needs of others. According to me, empathy is the most important quality of a leader. Hence, it is my belief that every single person has a potential to be a leader as long as she/he is able to relate to others and their situations.

According to Arianna Huffington in the article “Empathy: What We Need Now”, during hardships and instability of society, empathy is needed to find solutions to those issues. Huffington writes about how empathy is needed in our country in order to produce a positive social change. She begins by giving an example of a movement that Martin Luther King created and how empathy was a part of this movement. King as well spoke of how empathy is the sign of living. To become involved in the situations of humanity in order to improve it, displays that empathy is the core of a human’s existence. After reading this article, I do agree with Huffington about how individuals need to fully understand and put themselves within the situation to fully comprehend the issue to solve.

It is used to help others learn and decide on matters that would not be reasonable without feelings attached to them. Compassion and empathy inspire change in a society whether it be changing individual’s usual way of thinking, uniting, or accepting those who are different. Individuals can use their compassion for something to cause a change in someone else’s thought of that thing. Several people have used empathy to bring others feelings together. People can also use empathy to show others to have acceptance towards ones who may not be like themselves.
Mohandas Gandhi was a non-violent promoter for Indian independence.He was married young at 13,and went to London to go to law school.Gandhi got his degree there and was on his way to being a lawyer.He went to his first case,but couldn't even speak. Gandhi then got invited to South Africa from a businessman. Gandhi’s luck their was no good either.European racism came to him,after he got kicked off of a train,because he was “colored” and was holding a first class ticket.When Gandhi fought back because of it,was arrested and was sent to jail.After this, he became know as as a leader.Gandhi returned to India in 1896,and he was disgusted by it.British wanted them to wear their clothes,copy their manners,accept their standards of beauty,but Gandhi refused.Gandhi wanted people to live free of all class and wealth.Gandhi tried so hard and was more successful then any other man in India.They won independence in 1947. Gandhi’s non-violent movement worked because,Gandhi used clever planning, mass appeal, conviction, and compassion to win independence for India.
The interactive process between leaders and followers involves utilizing listening and communication skills (Northouse,2013). Leaders in servant leadership listen first and use empathy to better understand their followers. Empathy is the ability to better understand an individual by placing yourself in their shoes. Having this ability allows the follower to feel validated and worthy (Northouse, 2013). by finding solutions to personal problems a follower may have, is offering support. Awareness, or emotional intelligence, is another trait a servant leader possesses. Leaders must be aware of how their actions affect their followers. This can be how they dress or their correspondence in an email Northouse, 2013).
Empathy is the last characteristic a leader should have that is listed. A leader should definitely be able to understand and share feelings with their men. “ deathly pity ran me through at that sight-- far the worst I ever suffered.” This quote from the Odyssey shows that Odysseus deeply cares about his men, so when Scylla ate six of his best men he felt great despair hence the words “the worst I ever suffered.” No one wants a leader who does not care if anything happens to them, they want someone who will listen and protect
“You must be the change you wish to see in the world” this were one of gandhi’s quote. Gandhi was the leader of the Indian independence movement when British was ruling India. Gandhi lead India to independence and lead civil right movements all across the world. Gandhi wanted everyone to be equal and live free of class, wealth, and educational distinctions.There were a lot of different reasons on why Gandhi’s nonviolent movement worked. Three reasons why Gandhi’s movement worked is because disciplined civil disobedience, accepting jail time, and embracing the enemy.
When we think of leaders, the first thing that usually comes to mind is a person who holds significant power such as the president. While this may be true, the truth is, you do not need to be in a position of power to assume a leadership role. Everyone has the ability to become a leader. As leaders, everyone has the power to not only influence others, but inspire and motivate them as well. The purpose of this paper is to explore several leadership behaviors, specifically emotional intelligence, and how they can be applied in both my personal and professional lives. Within this paper, I will be discussing my personal definition of leadership and what leadership means to me, a self-evaluation of myself using MBTI and other leadership theories, and finally concluding with my exploration of emotional intelligence and its relation to effective leadership.
In conclusion Gandhi’s background made him who he was, giving him an idea of how to get India’s independence, and his impact on India help people realize you can fight with knowledge and nonviolence to change a way of life. What makes a person strong and brave it’s the person who works hard to make something right.
Another reason that individuals engage in these helping behaviors is that they have Empathy for others. The term Empathy refers to a persons ability to understand the needs and feelings of other people because they share in those feelings. And for sometime Empathy has been considered a significant factor in promoting positive behavior towards others.
Gandhi, through this movie, showed me that a great leader has to be intelligent enough to be productive and profitable using the tools or resources available instead of wasting time thinking “why” they do not have something specific; a good leader makes the best out of an awkward situation and connects everyone towards the organization goals.
One thing that I find hard about empathy that was referenced in the book is facial expressions and body language. I am a very expressive person when it comes to facial expressions so every little emotion shows on my face, while I have learned to control my body language. I was talking to a friend recently and they brought up the topic of my body language and facial expressions. They noticed that my body language is very controlled and that I am very aware of how my body language comes across while I am not so aware of what emotions are showing on my face nor do I have very much control over what shows on my face. Empathy is when I am able to feel or share feelings with another person. In order to do this, to truly do this I would have to had live through exactly they did or had some telepathic emotional connection to them. Only, our minds aren’t designed this way, we can’t truly ever feel real empathy. I can’t even begin to imagine know what it would take to really feel empathy and the emotions it would give me. Empathy doesn’t really doesn’t really exist; there is no way to actually feel what another person is going through, the closest we can come to empathy is visualizing another person’s perspective, in other words, I don’t agree with Wallace that empathy is the most important thing to learn in college, how to care is.
Empathy also assists me to be helpful to my workmates. If I put their feelings at heart, I will manage to assist them when need be.
