The author strives to be fair in all school relations. Fairness means making judgements free from discrimination. It is troublesome to a democratic style leader to hear someone say that something is not fair. However, it is important to remember that the word fair has different meanings to different people. If the principal does not treat everyone equally The term “fair” means different things to different people. Usually, being accused of being an unfair leader happens when you are perceived to have not treated everyone equally, nor consistent with the school’s rules, policies and past practices. Thus, this may seem unfair at times to the team as a whole. However, the principal needs to know if indeed there is fairness. Consequently, the author and staff has a clearly defined vision of what success looks like at the school and how it is measured. The goals and strategies are made with staff involvement. Once the staff is aware of this information, the principal gives updates so everyone knows where they stand individually and how the team is performing as a whole. It is not realistic for the principal to reward everyone all the time. The truth is some employees will shine a lot, some will meet the goal but not much more, and others will not perform. Thus, the principal must provide more recognition when appropriate. Another manner of demonstrating fairness as a principal is by holding the staff accountable for performance standards. The democratic leadership style invests time and energy in helping the teachers develop and acquire the performance needed. Therefore, if the teacher exhibits a desire to learn and grow, the fair principal continues to mentor.
