Frida (2002) directed by Julie Taymor and produced by Miramax is a biographical film about Frida Kahlo's art, disability, Mexican heritage and love and sex life. The film begins with reverse chronology depicting the end of the movie without background information. Selma Hayek portrays Frida Kahlo and like Frida is ethnically Mexican. The film begins with her years as a school girl clearly mischievous and also interested in art at a relatively young age. An important part of Frida's identity is her deviation from gender …show more content…
"I didn’t come here for fun. I have to work to earn my livelihood. I have done some paintings which I want you to look over professionally. I want an absolutely straightforward opinion, because I cannot afford to go on just to appease my vanity. I want you to tell me whether you think I can become a good enough artist to make it worth my while to go on. I’ve brought three of my paintings here. Will you come and look at them?" (Rivera, Diego, and Gladys Marc). Compared to the movie where she says, " I have to work to earn a living, so I don’t have time to fool around just for vanity, If I'm not good enough, I have to do something else to help my parents (Julie Taymor, Frida). It is clear how close these quotes are to real life. I think Julie Taymor's dedication to Frida's real life is a part of what makes this film work so well. It is not only a testament to Julie Taymor's directing approach but also the fact that this biography had incredible source material and Frida Kahlo just had that interesting of a …show more content…
Like Frida, Bessie was a woman of color and this in many ways affected her art. They were both often affected by their relationships with the men they loved. Bessie's husband Jack Gee was unfaithful to her in the same Diego Rivera was unfaithful to Frida. However, something both Bessie and Frida shared is sexual attraction to women and they were both willing to cheat back. Both films also have nonlinear or discontinuity editing as Bessie's story begins with a flashback with the abuse she experiences as a child and then immediately her later into her career which they begin to move from the beginning of her career whereas Frida begins with a flashforward of her in her 40s. Where Frida stands strong while Bessie falters is that the flashback that Bessie continually revisits o,f her being abused as child is not deeply explored enough to be deemed necessary to begin the film that way whereas by beginning Frida with a flashforward the audience comes to see at the end (same event as beginning) is every factor which has led her to that point her disability, her art and her career which is separate from
Ester Hernandez is a Chicana artist, best known for her works of Chicana women. Ester’s goal is to recreate women’s lives to produce positive images of women’s lifestyle and to create icons. Her piece, Frida y Yo, contains the iconic painter Frida Kahlo. Frida, after being in multiple accidents causing long-term pain and suffering, began painting, mostly self-portraits, to portray her reality and glorify the pain. Similar to how Hernandez's goals are a juxtaposition to Frida’s artwork, the art piece Frida y Yo creates a juxtaposition between life and suffering and death and fortune.
More specifically, in the first stanza the wife is the speaker and she explains hanging a wedding portrait of Frida and Diego Rivera. The wife had stated, “I wonder how two people could consistently hurt each other,/ but still feel love so deeply as their bones turned into dust?”(stanza 1). Which shows some foreshadowing into the wife’s relationship with her husband; and how they may not get along all the time, but they still care deeply for each other. According to New York Times Frida and Diego had a relationship that would always amaze and astonish everyone. Due to them getting married in 1929, then divorced in 1940, which they ended up marrying again that
Frida Kahlo is known for the most influential Latin American female artist. She is also known as a rebellious feminist. Kahlo was inspired to paint after her near-death bus incident when she was 17. After this horrendous incident that scarred her for life, she went under 35 different operations. These operations caused her extreme pain and she was no longer able to have kids. Kahlo’s art includes self portraits of her emotions, pain, and representations of her life. Frida Kahlo was an original individual, not only in her artwork but also in her
In The Kiss of the Fur Queen art is not only demonstrated as having a function, but specific examples are provided. Art in this text functions in three main ways. It functions as education, identity, and cultural formation. Counter to the concept that art can simply exist for art sake is that the meaningful functions of art are encountered in daily life. This novel crystallizes that concept and confirms that preserving and continuing artistic endeavours is needed not just for the sake of art, but for the many profound implications of arts functions.
Both Frida and Diego had affairs and a lot of the damage that Diego inflicted on Frida emotionally went straight to her paintings
Frida Kahlo was an amazing woman whose many tragedies influenced her to put her stories into her paintings. She was born in July 6th 1907 to a Mexican Roman Catholic mother who was of Indian and Spanish decent and a German photographer father. Frida had three sisters, Mitilde and Adriana, who were older and Christina who was younger. She learned about Mexican history, art and architecture by looking at her father’s photography. When Frida was six she got polio and it was a long time before she would heal completely. After surviving polio, Frida’s right leg became weak and thin, so her father encouraged her to play sports to help her.
Edna seeks occupational freedom in art, but lacks sufficient courage to become a true artist. As Edna awakens to her selfhood and sensuality, she also awakens to art. Originally, Edna “dabbled” with sketching “in an unprofessional way” (Chopin 543). She could only imitate, although poorly (Dyer 89). She attempts to sketch Adèle Ratignolle, but the picture “bore no resemblance” to its subject. After her awakening experience in Grand Isle, Edna begins to view her art as an occupation (Dyer 85). She tells Mademoiselle Reisz that she is “becoming an artist” (Chopin 584). Women traditionally viewed art as a hobby, but to Edna, it was much more important than that. Painting symbolizes Edna’s independence; through art, she breaks free from her society’s mold.
Baz Luhrmann has done this film in a unique and brilliant way, with help of the above, and of course a great loved story as a base.
..., but the lives of other women in the movies for example. It was not Cindy and therefore was not real life. It was a sense of reality without being real and so it made it fictional. Cindy used her American identity to show her values in the cinematic part of society and Frida used her Mexican identity to influence her works.

Born in 1910, Frida was a woman that was not about preserving young beauty. She loved to acquaint herself with Mexico, where she was born. Being a great painter, she loved to paint pictures of herself. A quote by her is as follows “I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best”. In other words, she can paint and feel free, because she knows herself well and can paint the
...movie that I fell in love with. But most of all I love how the story line is a great overlap into the cinematically engaging movie. There is a great use of camera, timing, shots and story line that are portrayed in this movie without being too overwhelming. This allows the audience to relax during the movie and just take in the scenes as a story from reality. To this day, and even still doing this paper I still come to find different aspects of the movie that I missed the previous times I have watched it.
...director did not limit the film to its historical context but extended the same to romance and fantasy. From a different angle of view, the director made use of the theme to communicate with the viewers and the fictional characters can be considered as his tools. Besides, ample importance is given to historical and fictional characters. In short, the amalgamation of history, fantasy and romance constituted much to the film’s importance as a historical/fictional masterpiece.
The director Nick Cassavetes did a great job using the location and actors to tell the story and show what they were thinking. He worked on the Notebook another great dramatic movie, where there were some similarities in how they acted. They were both great movies and very well made. The actors also play a great roll in the making of the movie, the movie would be impossible to make with out the main character Anna, she has been in a lot of movies and is now a very talented
