Whisper interpretation is one type of simultaneous interpreting. That requires the interpreter and his listener to stay physically close. In a meeting, the interpreters would ideally sit next to, or behind, their clients. Besides the advantages which are saving a great deal of time and money for the meeting, this type of interpretation causes some problems. First of all, interpreters will be tired because of posture adopted as whisper interpreting in a long time. To minimize this limitation, the interpreters must train their concentration ability by practicing listening in noisy environment. The use of psychological therapy or what is sometimes called “talk-therapy” has proven to be an effective and worthwhile resource in countless lives in America. For most hearing people, once the decision to seek help is made, it’s a simple matter of showing up to a therapy appointment or walking into a clinic and asking for help. However, for the Deaf culture finding accessible and Deaf-friendly services, can be a challenge producing little results. One way this issue is currently addressed is through the use of interpreters who help facilitate communication between a hearing professional and Deaf person. Therefore, the ideas discussed, reviewed the benefits and challenges of using interpretation when a Deaf person seeks counseling. The objective was to examine what role an interpreter may play in the process, in addition to the communication aspect between the hearing and Deaf.

Advocacy is a role that an interpreter takes that moves from interpreting the communication between speakers to acting on behalf of one of the speakers based on the interpreter’s understanding of what the speaker’s intended outcome is (NCIHC). It is challenging for medical interpreters to judge when to switch from their role as message converters to become patient advocates, and speak out in their own voice on behalf of a patient maintaining, at all times, high ethical and professional standards. When interpreters step in the role of patient advocate they become visible in the interaction going beyond the conduit role and becoming co-participants in the triad. What is the ethical role of the medical interpreter as an advocate for the Latino patient?; when is it appropriate to use advocacy?; how to make the decision?; what are the consequences of inappropriate use of advocacy role?; what are the boundaries?

Indeed, impartiality can be challenged in medical setting. In the case of verbal communication, the obvious challenge lies in language difference. Although increasing amount of people are learning how to speak english, not having basic understudying of Mandarin or other Chinese dialects can have negative implications on the success of Company ABC. Even with the use of an interpreter, lost in translation or miss representation of meaning can be a problem. For example, when people say “yes” in the U.S, it suggests that they agree with what is being communicated. However, when Chinese say “yes,” it simply means that they are paying attention.

The Deaf person may think that the person conducting the interview is just offering suggestions as to what the Deaf person could work on, but they are really telling them that they have to work on those areas. As the interpreter, it would be difficult for me to convey that message because it is sugar coated with hearing culture. The Deaf person may think they are an excellent employee, but the performance review my say otherwise and it is important that I convey that message without distorting what the hearing person said. There may also be some production jargon that I am not familiar with, so I may have to ask clarifying questions.
The event that I attended for the interpreter observation requirement was an event that occurred in the classroom and took place in order to provide interpretation for a guest speaker, Richard McGann, who was Deaf and blind. The event was held at the University of Pittsburgh during the Intro to Interpreting American Sign Language-English class taught by Jessica Adams on Tuesday, November 10th at 5:30PM and the interpreted lecture took place in a typical classroom located on the third floor of the Cathedral of Learning.
