For centuries, deaf people across the globe have used sign language to communicate, mostly using it privately in their own homes as a part of everyday life. Just recently, in the early ‘60s, professional linguists had discovered new truths concerning sign language and its native users. The news of these truths spread like wildfire and, thus, many turned their attention to sign language and the deaf community. With a horde of hearing people and deaf people needing to interact and exchange information with each other, how would they do so with a large-scale communication barrier? So, when expressing from, in the normal case, English to ASL (American Sign Language), a lot takes place. One must remember, English and ASL are two separate languages that have their own linguistic features: grammar, vocabulary, syntax, etc. Therefore, when interpreting, one must produce the original message into sign language while keeping the original meaning of the message intact. Any change in the meaning of the original message will cause an invalid interpretation, which then brings forth an ethics issue. The issue here is that a wrong interpretation causes ineffective communication between the hearing and deaf client/s, which candidly would be an interpreter’s fault in any situation. Interpreters are cautious to avoid this type of ethics dilemma at all costs. To add, it’s important that, when expressing in sign language, an interpreter considers his or her client’s linguistic level. A client’s linguistic level can be determined by noticing patterns in how the deaf or hard-of-hearing client uses sign language and how much they understand the signed message from an interpreter. For instance, interpreters working with first-grade children should use ASL vocabulary and grammar appropriate for the children’s’ grade level. Interpreters would not use the complex terms and sentence structure of a collegiate level adult in a first-grade classroom. Clearly, it’s evident that an interpreter must keep the message intact as well as match the level of his or her client while exercising the third step of the interpreting
If they see that you are confused they slow down and reword what they are trying to sign. Deaf people need an amount of personal space to be able to do arm movements that are required by some signs. Eye contact is important when signing so you have to avoid turning away, for it is considered rude. When in a group deaf people make sure to make eye contact with all the persons, they wait until someone is finished signing before responding, and if they need to make an comment they lift a finger or wave their hand. They do not hesitate to correct you when you sign something wrong and appreciate the effort of trying to communicate with them.
In my family, I have a close cousin who is Deaf, and I know that many of my family members have questions about Deaf culture but are too afraid to ask. I felt the same way, which was a main reason I decided to take the ASL class. The class not only opened my mind to the study of American Sign Language, but also how Deaf culture is used in our society. This book has helped me learn a lot, from ways to respect Deaf people and to understand them, which is why I have advised my family to give the book a look as well. I definitely agree with points this book makes, because nearly all of them relate to today’s society and the world that we live in right now. Although, occasionally, some points were a bit confusing and took me off-guard, I performed some critical thinking on it and made a list of those I didn’t quite understand or agree with.
In the book Seeing Voices, the author describes the world of the deaf, which he explores with extreme passion. The book begins with the history of deaf people in the United States of America, the horrible ways in which they had been seen and treated, and their continuing struggle to gain hospitality in the hearing world. Seeing Voices also examines the visual language of the deaf, sign language, which is as expressive and as rich as any spoken language. This book covers a variety of topics in deaf studies, which includes sign language, the neurology of deafness, the treatment of Deaf American citizens in history, and the linguistic and social challenges that the deaf community face. In this book, Oliver Sacks does not view the deaf as people having a condition that can be treated, instead he sees the deaf more like a racial group. This book is divided into three parts. In the first part, Oliver Sacks states a strong case for sign language, saying it is in fact a complete language and that it is as comprehensive as English, French, Chinese, and any other spoken language. He also describes the unhappy story of oralism (this is the education of deaf students through oral language by using lip reading, speech, and mimicking the mouth shapes and breathing patterns of speech)) in deaf children’s education. In addition, the first part is about the history of deaf people as well as information about deafness. It also includes the author’s own introduction to the world of the deaf.

Many hearing people do not take the time to listen to the Deaf community as they just assume that they are being “selfish” as they do not want to change. The Deaf community does not want the hearing community to change them. If we try to change the Deaf community, we are trying to change their language and culture. The Deaf community relies on American Sign Language just as many of us rely on English. We would not want anyone to try to convince us to change our language just so we can communicate with the general population. For centuries, people from all walks of life have been using their hands to communicate with one another, and for centuries people from all walks of life have been learning. Today I am following in their footsteps with a passion from God for the deaf language, culture, and souls. For almost a decade, an intense ardor for American Sign Language and a desire to reach its native users for Christ seeded itself in my soul, wove its roots deeper and deeper, and blossomed into one of the greatest loves of my life. American Sign Language is a unique language with a rich history that not only provides a service to people in the deaf culture, but also to hearing people who seek to attain fluency.
When children are born and as they grow most of what they learn to speak is from hearing their parents talk but what if they couldn 't hear? How would they learn? Its pretty simple actually. They wouldn 't learn. Those who were born hearing but got sick or eventually lost their hearing learned a few things and use them but, eventually they turn to ASL to be able to communicate with others and be able to further their education. When having to learn this language you have to keep many things in mind such as handshape, palm orientation, location, movement and facial expression, all of those things are crucial to being able to speak this language correctly. The 19 th century renowned deaf education pioneer in the U.S., Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, advocated the use of sign language to increase language development in hearing children. He noticed that the hearing siblings of deaf children showed academic advancement in language (Felzer, 2004). Continued studies verify his thoughts; classes that incorporate sign consistently score higher academically on various tests than their non-signing counterparts (Daniels, 1994).
The development of American Sign Language in the United States dates back to as early as the 1600s. On Martha’s Vineyard there was a relatively large Deaf population due to genetics and heredity. This was thought to trace back to the first people of the land, who traveled from Massachusetts and carried this genetic deafness with them. Because there were so many people that were deaf living there, it was extremely common for all people, deaf and hearing, to learn their own version of sign language. This early form of sign language was known as Martha’s Vineyard Sign Language (MVSL) (Lapiak, 1996-2014). Little did the creators of Martha’s Vineyard Sign Language know, MVSL would be incorporated into the first school for deaf students (Lapiak, 1996-2014).
Imagine using no spoken words, not hearing at all, yet at the same time communicating perfectly. By use of American Sign Language (ASL), many people communicate everyday. They share stories of hope and despair, trade ideas and opinions, cry and laugh. Their difference is one that is important in their lives, yet does not in any way decrease the value of those lives. Deafness is such a unique, insightful, and wonderful loss. It is one with such beauty and meaning. Deafness is one "disability" that isn't really a disability at all. Instead many prefer to look at it as a culture. The Deaf culture is made up of primarily deaf people who view their hearing loss as a different way of life. These people use their native tongue, American Sign Language, to communicate. ASL is a "full" language. it has adjectives following nouns, in addition to verbs, adverbs, and pronouns. It is not a language made up of gestures or miming. Signing is a precise process. It is a combination of one's face, body, eyes, shoulders, and hands moving in synch. A person cannot fully "speak" the language without understanding the importance of all five aspects. You can change the meaning of a phrase completely by raising your eyebrows, repeating the sign, or enlarging the space used. You create a whole picture, the scenario as it takes place. You explain to the receiver the mood, time frame, and event all in a short amount of time. Take an airplane ride, for example: you could sign the place quickly taking off, flying steadily to its destination, and having a bumpy landing, all with one movement. In the same sense, you can describe a person, a place, or an object to the tee. Giving directions is a snap, and telling a story is marvelous.

Kids take a sign, and they totally change the real meaning of it and tell other kids that it means something when it could actually be really offensive to deaf people if they saw the sign and the meaning. As you can see, from my previous reason that a lot of kids in school abuse sign language and probably soon to be taught the real meaning with the same sign. I know that in your eyes, sign language is just another language in America that has no point of being taught. Well Spanish I just another language that we shouldn’t be learning and French to.
