The song Where is the Love by Black Eyed Peas has several examples of logos, ethos and pathos along. It is also a critique of the downhill spiral our society is taking whether it is war, racism, exaggerated media, or selfish adults. The title of the song itself fits into the theme of individuals versus society.
This song stars off grabbing the listener’s attention by asking “what’s wrong with the world mama”(Black Eyed Peas 1). Logos, pathos and ethos are expressed throughout this song. Logos, or logic, is found throughout this song. This song lists several of the logos that still apply today such as the topic of terrorism and war. No matter how hard we try to stop the terrorism whether it is here or around this country society cannot put a stop to it. “A war is going on but the reasons undercover”(Black Eyed Peas 40), makes society think about why society went to war in the first place and why the war is still going on.

This describes the reputation that the United States has. Another example comes from the line “infecting the young minds faster than bacteria, kids want to act like what they see in the cinema”(Black Eyed Peas 67). This lyric goes a long way concerning what kids watch and how that will affect their behavior later on in life.
This song pulls out many examples of pathos. “Can you practice what you preach and would you turn the other cheek”(Black Eyed Peas 48-49) is a line that shows that while society seems concerned about what is going on in the world how many will actually try to make a change?
The line “overseas we try to stop terrorism, but we still got terrorists here living in the USA, the big CIA, the Bloods and the Crips and the KKK”(Black Eyed Peas 5-8) shows that society seems more concerned with trying to solve problems in other countries rather than focusing on solving issues here in our own

Inside out is a movie about a girl named Riley Anderson who is born with five emotions joy, sadness, fear, disgust and anger. These emotions are housed in Riley’s mind called headquarters. Each emotion plays a very big role in Riley’s life because they chose how she should feel during every second of the day since she was born. As riley got older things changed and her parents decided to move to San Francisco. Moving to a different state and city really made Riley’s life go downhill. Riley’s emotions fear, anger, disgust, and sadness were put into effect when she realizes she has to start a new school, and make new friends. Joy is displayed as a character who take charge and is always happy. For example, joys doesn’t like when other emotion
The Temptations’ 1970 hit “Ball of Confusion (That’s What the World is Today)” bravely sheds light on the political and social issues plaguing the world during the 1960’s. Written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong, this song deviates from Motown’s usual clean and charismatic approach and serves as a prelude for songs like Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On.” Through the use of shrewd lyrics, psychedelic instrumentals, and intimidating vocals “Ball of Confusion (That’s What the World is Today)” serves its purpose in making a statement against the tumultuous world America created.
Hip Hop was, at its inception, a means for African Americans to tell their unaltered story. Towards the mid-’90s however, the genre began to be way more salse conscious than it ever was before. Artists, such as Nas for example, began to stray from their genuine and authentic selves to start making music about drugs, violence, and sex because that was what pushed their sales to the corporate level. This album was Lauryn Hill coming to re-educate the people in an attempt to bring them back to the root of Hip Hop. This poem focuses on many different themes, however this focuses on religion. In the poem Mystery of Iniquity the writer Lauryn Hill examines religion to illustrate racial discrimination, corrupting and crooked
Black art forms have historically always been an avenue for the voice; from spirituals to work songs to ballads, pieces of literature are one way that the black community has consistently been able to express their opinions and communicate to society at large. One was this has been achieved is through civil disobedience meeting civil manners. In this case, it would be just acknowledging an issue through art and literature. On the other hand, there is art with a direct purpose - literature meant to spur action; to convey anger and shock; or to prompt empathy, based on a discontent with the status quo. That is, protest literature. Through the marriage of the personal and political voices in black poetry and music, the genre functions as a form
This song implies that individual’s are violating the norms and values of society. They start the song with a verse that expresses this concern. “What’s wrong with the world, mama/ People livin’ like they ain’t got no mamas…” (lines 1-2). This makes one aware of the disobedience of values that are held in the family. Values are “standard[s] of judgment by which people decide on desirable goals and outcomes.” (Newman, 32) Another verse in this song that illustrates how society is defying norms and values is when they sing: “People killin', people dyin'/ Children hurt and you hear them cryin/ Can you practice what you preach/ And would you turn the other cheek…” (lines 50-53). These lines utter that society has failed to act in a sane and coherent way that society once viewed as correct. The actions affirm that individuals are not living up to society’s norms. Norms are similar to “rules of conduct” and suggest how an individual “should” act. (Newman, 34) In the song they question the acts that would be taken that violate certain norms. Another example of the infringement of society’s norms and values is expressed when the s...
would be Big Brothers Big Sisters focusing on the tactics ethos, logos and pathos to demonstrate the effectiveness the organization has on the children who partake and the potential it has to help change future generations. Some strategies Big Brothers Big Sisters could use within ethos include credibility, this would be demonstrated by having past children who have been through the program and are now successful coming to talking at local schools where poverty is more prevalent. A factor for logos would be focusing in on the target audience, the people they want to gain interest in the organization. Lastly, a factor that would best support pathos for this campaign would be repetition, constantly making who the children are and where they live
Moore’s use of ethos in the scene is apparent when he interviews a student who was on the suspected killer list. The student, who was very closely connected with weaponry and the construction of bombs came close to first on the list, only one spot below the real murderers. With the knowledge and accessibility to “The Anarchy Cookbook,” containing instructions for the manufacturing of explosives, the student was able to assemble numerous incendiary devices in the comfort of his own home. This interview allows the audience to get a very similar source, as he grew up in the same hometown as the shooters, with the same upbringing and cultural influences. With such a prominent person involved in this strategic attack, Moore is able to effectively mirror the thoughts and ulterior motives for the constructing and execution of the school shooting
Human nature prevents us from ignoring hurtful emotions. Using the pathos method of persuasion, the persuader taps into the uncontrollable part of human beings, our emotions. Pathos uses strong imagery to coax the viewer into giving in to whatever the cause may be. For example, the Humane Society may use pictures of depressed (yet adorable) puppies to manipulate viewers into pet adoptions.
Political issues such as the war on terrorism is evoked as an issue throughout the song. American was divided “All across the alien nation” when troops were sent to Iraq to search for weapons of mass destruction. Metaphorical language was used to explore the issue. Audience positioning from techniques indorse concerns with a country divided and positions them to feel the need to cooperate and sort things out other than civil unrest and debate.
In the article titled “Struggling With State Exams, Students Still Advance”, written by Morgan Smith, it discusses an issue among the education system where even if a student has received great academic achievement, but has failed their state exam, they cannot pass to the next grade level. In this article, many different factors are put into it in order to make it effective such as the claim/ main points, the author’s stance, its purpose, and the needs/ expectations of the audience.
This assignment introduced me to the sound and message of the rapping duo: Black Sheep. The group consist of New York natives Dres and Mista Lawnge. My search for the album to review started with skimming through the table of context of Brian Coleman’s Check the Technique Volume 2 and listening to snippets of each album. I initially was going to review a 3rd bass album because of the familiar samples; however, one song from the Black Sheep album stood out and made this album a clear choice. In this assignment, I hope to examine most tracks on the album and analyze the collective message of this twenty-two track project.
The song that I choose to do this assignment on is Fight the Power by Public Enemy. Fight the Power was written in 1989 and quickly became a street anthem for millions of youths. It reflects with issues dealing with both the Civil Rights Movement and to remind everyone that they too have Constitutional Rights. This particular song is about empowerment but also fighting the abuse of power that is given to the law enforcement agencies. It gave citizens of the U.S a more modern outlook on the many struggles that not only the African American community is up against but the other minority groups as well. The song’s message was eventually supposed to bring people together and make the world a better place, even though some teens saw it as a way
“We fight each other for territory; we kill each other over race, pride, and respect. We fight for what is ours. They think they’re winning by jumping me now, but soon they’re all going down, war has been declared.” Abuse, Pain, Violence, Racism and Hate fill the streets of Long Beach, California. Asians, Blacks, Whites and Hispanics filled Wilson High School; these students from different ethnic backgrounds faced gang problems from day to night. This movie contains five messages: people shouldn’t be judgmental because being open-minded allows people to know others, having compassion for a person can help people change their views in life, being a racist can only create hate, having the power of the human will/goodness to benefit humanity will cause a person to succeed at any cost and becoming educated helps bring out the intelligence of people.
This articles brings lyrics from a song that was previously considered offensive, which is now clean by today’s standards, and effectively argues for freedom of speech.
