Human nature prevents us from ignoring hurtful emotions. Using the pathos method of persuasion, the persuader taps into the uncontrollable part of human beings, our emotions. Pathos uses strong imagery to coax the viewer into giving in to whatever the cause may be. For example, the Humane Society may use pictures of depressed (yet adorable) puppies to manipulate viewers into pet adoptions. Although many believe that they are only persuaded by logos, or the use of facts, it is simply not true. While logos may have an impact on choices, pathos will always come first. We do not donate to charities because however many percentage of whatever country is in poverty, we donate because we see images of starving and impoverished children. Ethos is
also extremely easy to cater towards individual persons. Knowing someone hates or loves a certain cause, supports a political side, or has a generally large heart, makes them vulnerable to ethos persuasion. For instance, due to a person’s opposition to homophobia, reading articles of injustice in the gay community may move them to donate to LGBT support groups. As a result of emotions defining humans as, well, humans, ethos will always prevail as the dominant persuasion method due to the inability of people to ignore their feelings. Next time you donate to a charity, ask yourself, why am I donating to this particular cause? If it is out of pity, or care, then ethos has played a role in your seemingly independent decision.

Pathos is the author's use of emotions and sympathy to urge the audience to agree with his or her standpoint. And lastly, logos apply sound reasoning (logic) to attract the typical ideas of the audience and to prove the author's point of view. "Lockdown" by Evans D. Hopkins is a fine example of an author using these appeals to persuade his audience. Hopkins uses of the three appeals are easy to locate and relate to throughout the entire passage. He undoubtedly uses rhetoric to try and keep his audiences focused and to persuade them to feel the way he does about the treatment of prisoners.
There are three methods of persuasion when speaking or writing to an audience: Ethos, Logos, and Pathos. Ethos uses a type of socially recognized authority as its voice. Logos uses logic and reasoning as its tool. Lastly, Pathos uses emotional attachment. For instance, the advertising industry primarily utilizes Ethos and Pathos reasoning and qualities, particularly a Matthew Mcconaughey Lincoln Motor Company commercial, and a Safe driving bonus check Ally Insurance commercial.
Thirty-two years ago Apple released its first commercial during the Super Bowl. The ad contains multiple references, including its title, from George Orwell's dystopian novel “1984”. The idea was conceived by Brent Thomas and Steve Hayden who decided on the brilliant tagline “Why 1984 won’t be like 1984”. The famous Ridley Scott directed the ad while actress, model, singer, and athlete Anya Major played the lead role. Apple’s “1984” has several instances in which one can observe the use of the three appeals: ethos, pathos, and logos. “1984” uses Aristotle’s three appeals to endorse the new Macintosh and put Apple on the market. More specifically, the use of ethos is blatantly obvious in the ad.

Effectively communicating an idea or opinion requires several language techniques. In his study of rhetoric, Aristotle found that persuasion was established through three fundamental tools. One is logos, which is used to support an argument through hard data and statistics. Another is ethos, which is the credibility of an author or speaker that allows an audience to conclude from background information and language selection a sense of knowledge and expertise of the person presenting the argument. The impact of pathos, however, is the most effective tool in persuasion due to the link between emotions and decisions. Although each of these tools can be effective individually, a combination of rhetorical devices when used appropriately has the ability to sway an audience toward the writer’s point of view.
The emotional state of any given person’s mind can determine the way in which they think, act, behave, or respond to any certain event. When used correctly, persuasion is a deadly weapon at the tip of your tongue, and it certainly can, and will, help you obtain your desired outcome. So, if anyone may not know, what do you truthfully use to manipulate the thoughts of others? Well, whether you are aware or not, your strategies more than likely fall under ethos, pathos, or logos, that of which, I would like to uncover in the speech of Margaret Sanger.
In regards to her pathos persuasions she uses detailed and emotion-packed quotes in order to provoke her audience’s emotions. When it comes to her ethos persuasions, she uses them intermittently throughout her article by referencing her job title as an instructor and clearly establishing her themes and goals of the article in order to create a credible and dependable persona for her audience. Guns do belong in schools and prospective parents should be required to obtain a license before having kids. These are the dominant themes present in Jamie O'Meara's "Gun, Sex, and Education" and Janice Turner's "Should We Need a License to Be a Parent?" respectively. O'Meara argues that just like sex education arms the youth with knowledge, protecting them from irresponsible promiscuous behavior, gun education would serve the same purpose with respect to violence and guns. Similarly, Turner calls for new legislation but in an entirely different arena. She believes that in order to become parents, adults or non-adults for that matter, should meet a certain required standard and obtain a license in order to enter the most important profession of all: parenting. In order to develop these arguments, both writers utilize the general rhetorical strategies of comparison and argument. However, there is one key difference between the approaches taken to the development of the arguments. O'Meara's article has successfully employs ethical (ethos), emotional (pathos) and logical (logos) appeal whereas Turner's article takes a predominantly rational appeal (logos). Though both articles do an excellent job of conveying their points, all things considered, O'Meara's attempt at presenting a well balanced approach appealing to logic, emotion and ethics is more successful than Turner's attempt at presenting a solely logical argument.

Hooks develops her essay by establishing credibility with her audience, appealing to the reader’s logic, and stirring their emotions. In the 1960’s America was divided over the voting rights of African Americans. It was a time of racial and political unrest as president Lyndon B. Johnson encouraged Congress to pass the Voting Rights Act. On March 16, 1965 “We Shall Overcome” was delivered to congress. Lyndon B.
