Full Title: Rough Draft You’ve probably heard that women make less money than men regardless of their credentials which is a direct result in the statistics from the gender wage gap today. What does this actually mean? What factors are resources using when they come up with their statistics about the wage gap? Today you will be given all the evidence which shows that many resources lack the ability to provide all factors that affect the pay between men and women. Years ago there was a big difference in the income between men and women. There are important factors that measures income that are not inputted in many statistical finding in relation to how the gender wag gap is calculated. According to the article The Pay Gap from a Different Perspective, “They are nationwide annual measures that do not account for hours worked per week, weeks worked per year, educational attainment, college majors and specialties (options) within those majors, physical demands, hazardous and unpleasant working conditions and employee preference” (Kilgour, 2014, p. 2). Know this is where information starts to become misleading because many of these finding are based on every working man and women. Kilgour (2014) identifies the wage gap would basically be closed, if the reports were altered to reflect weekly hours worked. If all contributing factors were implemented, there would be evidence that show women would accumulate more income than men throughout the workforce in the near future. The gender wage gap is not based on same job equivalent but broken down into genders no matter what job careers are indicated. There is a lower percent of women who want to work the corporate jobs which require most of its employee’s time devoted to the company, so they would rather have jobs that offer flexibility so they can still be the nurturer at home. This is the main reason for the gender wage gap because most men don’t mind working long hours and being away from their families for extended time. The social injustice I chose was the Gender Wage Gap. That means that there is a huge difference of one gender getting paid less than the other. A women makes 78 cents an hour while men make a dollar. In my piece, I chose to make both gender symbols doctors who perform the same job, the same amount of work hours,and that they both save lives. The gender pay gap is defined as the difference between median earnings of men and women relative to median earning of men. It can be measured in three different ways: by how much they earn an hour, by how much they earn in a week and by how much they earn on a yearly basis. The gender pay gap is a social issue since it affects women, who make up approximately 50% of our population. Women of minority groups are affected more strongly by the gender pay gap since they earn even less than Caucasian women. Those women can even earn ,on average, 0.50$ for every dollar a man would make.
A number of factors have contributed to the gap between men’s and women’s wages. These include: occupational segregation of women into low paying jobs; lower levels of unionization for women and attitudinal barriers that have kept women from achieving equality in the workplace and undervaluation for women’s work.
After reading the article, “The Gender Wage Group Lie” by Hanna Rosin I was able to learn a lot about the “gender wage gap” which I had not previously known. Rosin begins her article by quoting the line, “women are paid 77 cents on the dollar for doing the same work as men” which many people have expressed, even President Obama in his latest campaign. By doing this she sets up her article to reveal the truths behind this infamous quote comparing the median “gender wage gap” of men vs women. Rosin first compares the “full-time” aspect in which she informs the reader that men tend to work more hours than women, stating, “We could be comparing men working 40 hours to women working 35”. This would lead to an invalid approach to compare the “gender wage gap”.
Women are more than half the work force and are graduating at higher rates then men and continue to earn considerably less then men. There are several contributing factors to the gender wage gap. Women experience gender discrimination in the work force even though it’s been illegal since the Equal Pay Act in 1963. One of the challenges for women is uncovering discrimination. There is a lack of transparency in earnings because employees are either contractually prohibited or it’s strongly discouraged from being discussed. Discrimination also occurs in the restricting of women’s access to jobs with the highest commission payments, or access to lucrative clients.
Due to various countries initiatives to shrink the wage inequality between men and women wages in the work force, the gap has narrowed, respectively, which may have helped form such opinion. However, stating that the gender pay gap does not exist in today’s society, anywhere, is completely unlikely. Seeing that the gap has loosened its grasp in the working world, in other countries, the gap between pay has widened or remained stagnant. One cannot help but wonder why the gap remains consistent, even with such substantial progress made in countries where the gap has decreased. Reasons as to why gender wage gap exist so heavily, slightly differs from country to country, but the overall effect from the wage disparity is wholly evident.
