This week at my internship I joined a majority of the staff attending a training called Bridges Out of Poverty and Effectively Living and Working within a Diverse World. The training also had an emphasis on ending sexual and domestic violence. It was a great training that lasted two days and was presented by Jodi Pfarr of Minneapolis, MN. She was an excellent speaker who held my attention the whole time. She also had the participants split into groups and discuss, which allowed me to hear about real-life experiences and hear from people of other counties. In evaluating myself this week, I would say that I did well. I was on time for the meetings and presented myself in a professional manner. One of these roles is to be a facilitator, or to be involved in gathering groups of people together for a variety of purposes including community development, self advocacy, political organization, and policy change. Social workers are involved as group therapists and task group leaders. Second example of relating classroom material is are discussion on diversity. I am not even going to list the class that bring up diversity because then I would list every single social work and psychology class I have ever taken in the social work program. Every class brings it up because it is extremely important to take diversity into account when working in this profession with clients. The whole second day of training was dedicated to learning about diversity. We created a chart with triangles and each had a triangle pair, one facing up and one facing down. The one facing up we put the “normalized” classification in that triangle and the “non-normal” in the other triangle facing down. For example, white, male, heterosexual, middle class and up, and so on were in the triangles facing up, while all other races, female, LGBT, lower class, and so on were in the triangle facing down. The primary roles that were incorporated into group were defined by the leaders of group. Those leaders included the social workers and group psychologists, as well as students when appropriate. The leaders focused on task and maintenance roles, such as; coordinator, elaborator, evaluator, information seeker, initiator/contributor, opinion giver, procedural technician, encourager, gatekeeper, harmonizer, and standard setter. The individual roles was primarily the dominator. Due to the dominator portion of group, it changed the atmosphere and will be discussed later.
It sometimes give “the perception of ‘token appointments’ [of individuals] who could not be hired or promoted on performance ability alone” (Von Bergen, Soper, & Foster, 2002, p. 242). It can also create more discrimination in the form of reverse discrimination where those formerly believed to be discriminators are now unfairly victimized because of the color of their skin. Diversity training can sometimes be demoralizing and reinforces stereotypes when trainers resort to emphasizing differences that elicits anger and divisiveness (Von Bergen, Soper, & Foster, 2002, p. 245). Businesses can find their legal liabilities have increased when “unorthodox training techniques invade employee privacy and humiliate individuals in front of their co-workers” (Von Bergen, Soper, & Foster, 2002). According to Choi’s research “individuals in diverse groups tend to fell less safe and to trust each other less. Lower trust is more likely to lead to higher conflicts within groups” (Choi, 2008, p.
This paper is about a reflection on a class interview for a senior social worker. The teacher gave every student ten minutes for this interview. The students did not have an idea of what their situation was about until couple minutes before the interview. This paper will focus on the limits of confidentiality for the client, potential assessment for the client, engagement with the client, and evaluation of the social worker.
Prior to taking this class, I have had little knowledge about Social Work in the context of mental health. Nathan Mraz was kind enough to let me know about his general experience in the field at Frontier Behavioral Health in Spokane. Frontier Behavioral Health is a Trauma-Informed Care organization that works to provide Psychiatric and psychological services to anyone in need. The services are available to all ages whether the patient is a child, an adult or among the elderly.
Overall this semester, I believe my writing in this course has been one of my strongest areas and I am excited to keep getting better at this skill. With my mother’s help during middle and high school, my papers have improved significantly and now I think I have a firm grasp on writing for various disciplines, but particularly professional settings like social work. I picked up on APA format quickly after doing MLA for several years and it now feels like second nature to me. There are certainly still formatting areas to improve upon and learn more about, but at this stage, I think I am progressing steadily. Thirdly, I am able to find appropriate sources easily to reference in my activity analyses, which is crucial as I advance in the program.
This assignment will discuss the importance of reflection and reflective practice within health and social care. Definitions of reflection and reflective practice will be given followed by, why reflective practice is important, including the Evidence based practice followed by the support of reflection. The essay will also discuss the governing bodies like the NMC (Nursing Midwifery Council), and the failings of the NHS through reflection such as the Francis report. Finally, the assignment discusses reflecting models such as Gibbs cycle, to improve the development and knowledge in practice.
Social work practice requires many skills, which need much practice themselves. This needs social work students to be open to trying within safe environments and scenario’s for mistake, such as with their peers and with emotional safe scenarios such as stress at University. This begins with a requirement to do 5 minutes of interviewing with a peer which includes many social work skills such as active listening, encouraging, paraphrasing, being/creating a welcoming and safe environment and other such basic and beginning skills.
I have always perceived social work as an opportunity to help various people in many different situations, including improving people’s lives by helping them cope and solve issues in their everyday lives. As a social worker, I had the mindset of becoming a therapist eventually, although I did not specifically know what that would entail or the type of therapist I would become. When I first started my career in social work and case management, I had the notion that therapists were like doctors or healers – the client has a problem, and visits the therapist or “healer” to seek enlightenment and healing.. I thought that the role of the client would just be to state the problems or the reason for seeking the healer, and the healer has a special book that he or she consults, and just like that, he presents a lasting solution to the client’s problems or issues. I also used to think that when clients see therapists or “healers” their lives change for the better, the therapist feels accomplished, and the world is a beautiful place all over again. However, based on the different therapeutic approaches learned last semester and this semester, I have come to know that the relationship between the therapist and the client goes far beyond the “patient –healer relationship.”
Working with others and improving own learning and performance are highly essential skills in social work. In this essay I will reflect on how well I have developed these two skills and what I need to do to improve them.
Over the course of the semester, I have learned a variety of many things regarding social work. These things vary from learning how to help oneself to understanding how to help others. Not only were the textbooks very useful, but also the materials that furthered this textbook learning. The in class presentation, activities, and guest speakers gave us insight and a different perspective on the material we were learning. I feel like this course has given me a good foundation and prepared me as a future social worker (1).
This is Journal #11. My placement is at Weakley County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Dresden, Tennessee. The eleventh day I attended my placement was on Tuesday, April 13, 2016. I volunteered from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.
As I reflected and read the first chapters, it made me realize that I need to grasp more knowledge and information when it comes to social work, because it's such a broad field and they work in different settings with various roles and duties. My understanding of social work was only limited to case managers because they were the first people to visit us in our empty apartment when we came here to America, and they provided us the necessary resources such as helping us apply for public assistance and search for employment opportunities for my parents so that we can gain stability. When I approached my client and asked if I could use the FIT with him, he was a hesitant at first, because he really did not want to talk about certain topics that were going to make him emotional. I explained to him that we did not have to proceed with the FIT if it was going to make him uncomfortable, but I did inform him that I had to carry out this intervention as part of a grade. He then agreed to contribute because he said that I was helping him with finding permanent housing, so he was going to help me out, but I just think he felt sorry for me.

Before reading chapter three on person-centered theory I only had a vague understanding of the theory and how it was incorporated in the social work profession. I understood how it fit in clinical social work, but was unaware of how many elements of the theory that I strongly believe in, and hope to bring to my practice in the future. When I was reading the general definition, I couldn’t help but to think about the essay that I wrote to apply for admissions to Springfield College School of Social Work. I wrote about the strengths that I believe I could bring to the social work profession. Those included being empathetic, present, and being able to reflectively listen.
