The primary roles that were incorporated into group were defined by the leaders of group. Those leaders included the social workers and group psychologists, as well as students when appropriate. The leaders focused on task and maintenance roles, such as; coordinator, elaborator, evaluator, information seeker, initiator/contributor, opinion giver, procedural technician, encourager, gatekeeper, harmonizer, and standard setter. The individual roles was primarily the dominator. Due to the dominator portion of group, it changed the atmosphere and will be discussed later.
There are many ways to communicate and incorporate therapeutic aspects into dealing with any patient, but this also applies to group therapy as well. Yalom’s therapeutic
factors focus on positives in the patients’ lives, primarily focusing on the outcomes. The therapeutic factors seen within group include; instillation of hope, altruism, imparting of information, corrective recapitulation of primary family group, interpersonal learning, existential factors, and catharsis. Catharsis was the primary therapeutic factor that was noticed throughout all group therapy sessions, this is because allow emotions to take place verbally is a safe way of expressing hardships and frustrations. It is also important to say that while these aspects of Yalom’s factors were the primary ones of note, not all of these factors were in every group experience. Therapeutic factors and communication is very important no matter the circumstance. However, when the primary focus in mental health is communication and understanding from client/patient to medical personnel, acquiring good therapeutic communication techniques is key. Throughout the mental health rotations, therapeutic communication was everywhere, and was applied very well. The only negative technique that was worth noting was stated in roles, which was the dominator. The dominator tended to cut patients off frequently when it wasn’t exactly where the conversation was wanted to go, this also, in one group session, caused immense turmoil and disruption within the group itself. There are two sides to a story, in one hand this technique could be identified as therapeutic given the right circumstance, during this group experience however it was perceived as non-therapeutic and disrupted trust.
It was rather an uneventful week. I still struggle with facilitating and co-facilitating group therapy. I think I am becoming less uncomfortable, but still anxiously nervous. Every time I need to say something, give feedback, or ask a question, I overthink in my head and wonder if it is the right thing to say, if it is going to be helpful, or rather sound silly. The thing that stands out most is my frustration when my groups become “individual sessions with audience”. Even if I try to bring it back to we-centered theme, involve others, and encourage group thinking, some people tend to monopolize the group time, and I just feel that it is a wasted time. After completing the group task of preparing a presentation on, transferring individual facilitation skills into a group work setting I will critically reflect upon my own participation. I will evaluate my self-awareness while working in the group, as well as those around me. The way that I personally dealt with any issues that arose within the group and how that affected the group dynamics. I will also briefly discuss the roles in which each member of the group took and how role allocation affected, the group dynamics and the working relationships. Through the process of this class I have been able to reflect and analyze how I am as a leader as well as a co-leader in a group setting. I believe throughout this process of being part of a group as a member and leader has help me further define the roles that I will play in group counseling in the future. In reflection on my learning experience in the group class, I have gained clarity on what sorts of competencies of facilitating group therapy, as well as in what areas social workers and students tend to feel most strong in my practice. Regarding my specific gains in competencies, I feel that I learned the most and was most likely to gain specific group facilitating competencies at the weekly class. Learning in group class is taught me the tools to use to work with groups therapy, communities and also with individuals through the process of changes. Concepts In the first chapter, the therapeutic factors that stood out to me the most was instillation of hope. There is research that says most therapies operate through hope and conviction. Group therapists do all that they can to increase the patient’s belief and confidence in group therapy that works effectively. Also, it is important that therapists believe in themselves. The most important is that members learn from others who have similar problems how therapy can work for them in their life.
