Now a day employers look for many skills in workers. There are many reasons why worker are not get a job or they are getting fired, but there is one reason why that is happening. That reason is that many employers need people with good skills, qualities and attributes. There are many workers out there, who don’t have the skills that are need in the current workforce. Well that is going to change and there the career and work counsellor come in. “For years, employers have been aware of employee engagement and maintenance issues in their workplaces. As the millennial generation (also commonly known as Gen-Y and includes births from 1982 – 2000) grows in the workforce and baby boomers retire, managers and human resources professionals will need to develop new engagement models take into account the generational differences between baby boomers and millennial (Gilbert, 2011 ).”According to the article “THE MILLENNIALS: A NEW GENERATION OF EMPLOYEES, A NEW SET OF ENGAGEMENT POLICIES” there was a research done that show that baby boomers are the largest generation of workers, who are organizational memory, confidence and there are willing to longer hours. (Gilbert, 2011) what does this mean in the current workplace is that many baby boomer are retiring early or there are quit their job because there don’t have the skills that are required in the current workplace. In this essay I will be analysing the skills, qualities and attributes workers need in today workplace. Also how does this affect the career and work counsellors. The important skills needs in today workplace are: communication skills, flexibility, able to adapt to new technology, positive attitude, thinking skills, and teamwork skills. So in some case it is difficult but at the end it is all worthy because you will have new skills and you old skills will be new again. Also you will have a better job which will support you family. Overall how does a career and work counsellor play the role in this is by helping clients to get those skills that are important in the workplace and telling them that many employers look at these skills. As a Career and Work Counsellor it is you job to help the clients understand the skills they have because when it could to the workplace it is explain differently to them. If you get clients who want up to date their skills or those who don’t have the skills that are required, as counsellor you could tell them the free programs where they could upgrade their skills.
The millennial generation is made up of people that were born from 1978-1999. People from older generations say the millennial generation people are growing up being unprepared for the real world. In an article titled “The Tethered Generation” written by Kathryn Tyler she talks about why the millennial generation is so different than any other generation. She also explains how they depend heavily on their parents well into adulthood. Communications plays as a critical factors of both management and leadership. It can contribute to stress, feeling of alienation and lack of recognition or it can help in facilitate positive working relationship.
There are literally hundreds of desirable traits in the workplace. Of these, one of the arguably most important is to be well-rounded in the workplace. Many skills can assist an individual in being a well-rounded employee. Oral communication skills, written communication skills, teamwork, technical skills, leadership skills, adaptation skills, computer skills, interpersonal skills and analytic abilities are some of the key factors to a well-rounded employee. While these skills all seem to be of equal ability to the well-rounded employee, the scope of this paper will only delve into a few of the skills preceding. Technical skills, oral communication skills and leadership skills will all be detailed in this review in an attempt to help you (the reader) become a well-rounded employee.
The main themes addressed in this article are the generational changes within the workforce, the advancements in the economy that are affecting the workplaces and the changes in the work ethic of employees.
They have idealistic tendencies and are extremely willing to sacrifice personal time in order to achieve success in the workplace. Even though Baby Boomers are typically seen as micromanagers, they are good at building collaborative relationships with their coworkers and networking. Many Baby Boomers feel that their life’s purpose is to work hard, respect the chain of authority and hierarchy in the workplace. This is due to the fact that Baby Boomers were brought up in a work atmosphere where the chain of command was always respected (Kapoor, Solomon, 2011). Baby Boomers also work very hard for promotions and believe in sacrificing personal for the sake of being successful; they started the ‘workaholic’ trend and believe in paying their dues and step-by-step promotion that comes with age and time worked at a company. They also like teamwork, collaboration, group decision-making and believe in loyalty toward their employers (Tolbize, 2008). Baby Boomers tend to stay with one company for the duration of their professional life.
Workers are often pitted against each other in the work place as a form of competition. One division that is commonly seen is gender and race, but there is also a divide concerning age that isn’t discussed as frequently. Baby Boomers are those who was born between 1946-1964, when WWII soldiers came back home, settled down and started the “Baby Boom”. While Millennials are those born around 1981-2000, and have a similar population size as Baby Boomers. In the workplace, Millennials are categorized as being bad workers due to how they were raised in sheltered lifestyles and require a different environment than the previous generation, but that is not accurate. As I have noted, I truly believe that the numerous job skills that are needed to be successful include dedication, communication, and adaptation. First of all, you must be devoted to your career if you want exemplary results. Equally important, being able to articulate your ideas, and intellectually communicate said ideas will ensure a successful time at you occupation. Last but not least, in order to be successful in your employment, you must be flexible to the obstacles that are inevitable. I urge you to strive to obtain these essential job skills because they are worthwhile.
The skills that I am referring to are Oral and Written Communication, Interpersonal, and Teamwork skill. These sets of skills have been identified US dept of Labor and other universities and learning Centers as the essential skills every person needs.
This reflective essay will critically review my personal and professional skills that I am less confident in whilst in practise, which is essential for communication and developing effective relationships with others in an organization and even for personal development. It may be felt by clients that the primary objectives and responsibilities of vocational counsellors and a trained career counsellor are similar but in fact they are essentially different. Social context of clients in their career switches or consideration for a certain career path is one key area of assessment. However, it might comes off as an area unconcerned by vocational counsellors. The tag line is career counseling does sensations in both characteristics and life of an individual bringing out underlying drive’s on an individual to a higher heights. Millennials will face a constantly changing job market that they are not prepared for, because of the increase in global competition and the reality that the millennial generation is not prepared to compete with higher standards. Jeffrey Bosworth in his article “Hunting for Hope in Modern America,” provides information regarding competition in the workforce is not just from peers, but that it “crosses country and cultural boundaries” and how competition will be surrounded with “young, educated, motivated people in every country” (334). Because there is so much competition in the workforce, the millennial generation will have to be fully prepared in many skills and be the most efficient candidate for the job. Donald S. Miller and Thomas E. Slocombe, authors of “Preparing Students for the New Reality,” discuss how candidates for jobs need to realize that not only is it difficult to become employed but also to “remain unemployed” (19). The millennial generation will be confronting economic problems that are combined with employment. The United States is attempting to resolve a high unemployment rate from past years, which results in a part of the millennial generation becoming unemployed or a lack of stability in their employment.
