Careers are not something to be taken in a light manner as it acts as a major function in every being’s life. Career dysfunctional may results in decreased self confidence, increased interpersonal communication problems or traces of depression. According to Beverly Baskin, the term career can be defined as the the totality of work one does in one’s lifetime. Given this definition, education, family responsibilities, work and leisure activities are inclusive.
Vocational counseling is a career concentrated for individuals who needs to attain work coming in contact with counselors to help individuals evaluate or improve skills, developing and learning methods to obtain a job. While client and counselor are to come into contact, counselor can recognize the client’s enthusiasm achieved by conversations and perhaps surveys done. With these steps done, the counselor have the ability to distinguish the client’s abilities. With certain strengths and skills possessed by the client being identified it is possible to start applying for work. Otherwise, the counselor might recommend clients for certain programmes according to one’s interests. Vocational counseling is oftenly of a shorter duration consisting of a few sessions unless clients are unsuccessful while looking for work or because of the lengthy training they have to obtain. Thus majority of vocational counseling is low in cost or at no cost as it varies.

It may be felt by clients that the primary objectives and responsibilities of vocational counsellors and a trained career counsellor are similar but in fact they are essentially different. Social context of clients in their career switches or consideration for a certain career path is one key area of assessment. However, it might comes off as an area unconcerned by vocational counsellors. The tag line is career counseling does sensations in both characteristics and life of an individual bringing out underlying drive’s on an individual to a higher heights. Hence, career counselling conducted by trained career counsellors definitely yield more benefits making it a value-add service.
Ehrenreich opens the book by seeking out a “career coach”, in other words, someone who will help her navigate the sea of job opportunities. From Ehrenreich’s description, the biggest thing the coaches bring to the table is enthusiasm and support. Many results have been positive from someone having a coach to guide them. Understanding career development theories, in what stage would you say that the client’s problems began?
On the first day walking in that door feeling: scared, nerviness, and open-minded. On my first day at George Brown College walking with confident and excited in the program Career and Work Counselling. The program I always dreamed of being in. One of my classes I have got is called Overview of Career and Work Counselling. Overview of Career and Work Counselling, what it is about, what are we going to learn about and how is this class going to help us in the field as a counsellor? This class teaches me about the history of counselling, and how to counsellor client in a different way. On the first day in overview of Career and Work Counselling class questions in mind like what are we going to learn about? Well we are going to learn about a lot of things and all that has to do with Counselling, like how could we use our skills in the field and learn new skills that will make us a good counsellor. Furthermore we learn about the different ways of counselling. In this class we learn about difference between career and job. Also we learn about different skills that we can improve on and should start using in our life. In this essay I will be analyzing the topics we learned in class, also I will be analyzing why we learned these topics and how these topics will help me or any counsellor is a good counsellor. I also will be talking about how I grow throughout the class.
Views were not taken from older men, which could vary greatly from young college undergraduates. It would also be interesting to see a comparison of this study with women and their view of career counseling. Women are more “help-seeking” in general, but that does not mean that they do not carry an attitude or stigma in regards to career counseling. Application of career theories to my own life allows for analyzing past and future career decisions. Holland’s Theory of Careers states that one’s vocation is an expression of self, personality, and way of life. There is an indisputable and fundamental difference in the quality of life one experiences if they choose a career one truly enjoys, versus choosing a career one detests. A true testament to the validity of Holland’s theory, my job/career choices reflect my interests, as well as the evolution of my personality (internal self). My first job as a fine jewelry specialist and second job as a make-up artist echo my love of the fashion world. As I matured and became less fascinated by presumed “glamour” careers, I became captivated by physical fitness, nutrition, and medicine; I received my national fitness trainer certificate so that I may become a personal trainer. Nevertheless, my career decisions do not fit uniformly into merely one career theory.

The Career Decision Self-Efficacy Scale (CDSE) was developed by Karen Taylor and Nancy Betz to apply Albert Bandura’s theory of self-efficacy expectations to the domain of career decision making. Career decision self-efficacy was originally defined by Taylor and Betz as the individual’s belief that he or she can successfully complete tasks necessary in making career decisions. To define these tasks, the theory of career maturity of John O. Crites was used. A career that I have been interested for a very long time is in Psychology, which is to be a Counseling Psychologist. To be a Counseling Psychologist research is needed to receive a clear understanding of this specific career. For example, it is valuable to know what are the job requirements/duties, being paid hourly or salary, and if it is required to relocate. However, it is very important for me to know does it fit my personality, the exact year of graduation, what schools will I attend, how long it would take to complete my education and how much will my education cost. These are all-important material to be familiar with and are a journey that I am ready to take and experience.
