Diversity, in my perspective, not only means the variety of individuals regarding their race, but also their interests and ideas. Diversity can focus on multiple different things, but the main point is that there is variety. Diversity is very important to me and I consider myself to be a diverse individual. I was born in Ohio, but my parents were born in Puerto Rico. I grew up surrounded by a multitude of different races. I attended a school where there were a considerable amount of African American, Caucasian, Hispanic, and Asian students. I myself am a Hispanic female who has taken joy in delving into Asian entertainment and culture since a young age. I watch anime and listen to Japanese music. I watch Korean, Taiwanese, Japanese, and Chinese
dramas along with movies. I also read and collect Japanese graphic novels that have been translated into English, which are referred to as Manga. I have expanded into Korean culture and now listen to mainly Korean music. I am open- minded towards other cultures and find them fascinating to learn about. I believe diversity plays such an important role in allowing us to understand others and their cultural differences. It allows individuals to connect to each other regardless of who they are. If there was no diversity in my life I wouldn’t be able to say that I am who I am today without it. Asian culture, especially Japanese and Korean play an immense role in my identity. I love spreading my love for Asian culture and my Hispanic culture, so attending a diverse college will allow me to spread that love even further. I will be able to learn about the diversity of other students while sharing my diverse interests with them.
Every individual in society and in a community is unique in their own ways, and their diversity shows up in many ways. Some of these ways include: religion, race, socioeconomic status, lifestyle, and so on. Everyone’s backgrounds are different, and this is what creates diversity in people. Even though everyone might not be the same, only by uniting everyone can we create the big picture. It’s like a puzzle—even though people are different, we can come together to create a big picture that couldn’t be created by puzzle pieces of the same shape. To me, diversity symbolizes the unique backgrounds that we come from. Every individual in their communities and in their society are influenced by their background—and this can come from various reasons. If someone comes from a different socioeconomic background, or lifestyle, their thought processes and their view of life might be much more different than mine. Their reaction to a certain situation can be much more different than mine, and it is important for me to see all these viewpoints in order to be a more informed member of my community. The real definition of diversity includes different elements of the identity and culture of each person. Diversity involves cultural differences, such as origins, religious or political affiliation, race, and gender, and other more profound differences, such as experiences and personality. As Banks argues in her research, the real definition involves several elements of our identity (149). Therefore, the way in which we define and conceptualize diversity affects the way in which we interact with people of others culture, race, and affiliations.

When people hear the word 'diversity', they often think in terms of black and white. I believe the true meaning of diversity is not simply about skin color, economic background or the face value of any other characteristic, rather it is the increased knowledge and sensitivity gained from unique experiences. The strength of diversity then comes from having many points of view and trying to reconcile them by finding common truths or resolving differences amongst people. Being a person of mixed heritage, my father is black and my mother is white, has definitely affected my life and contributed to the development of qualities that enhance my ability to embrace the uniqueness of those around me. Being raised in a single parent household and the values passed on to me by my mother have also been strong influences in my life. My greatest contribution to my community is the ability to create relationships between people of diverse backgrounds and a desire to understand others' beliefs.
In my opinion I believe Diversity means every individual should be treated and spoken to with respect they should not get discriminated due to their race or culture; everyone should be accepted regardless of who they are. This also means everyone should get the same medical care no individual should be treated differently because of their race
One of the best definitions for diversity I have come across says, “Diversity is the mosaic of people who bring a variety of backgrounds, styles, perspectives, values, and beliefs as assets to the groups and organizations with which they interact ” (Rasmussen, 1996, p. 274). This definition has three noteworthy points. First, it describes diversity as a mosaic, which is different form the traditional label of a melting pot. A mosaic enables people to retain their individuality while contributing collectively to the bigger picture. Second, this definition of diversity applies to and includes everyone; it does not rule out anyone. According to this definition, we are all diverse. Finally, this definition describes diversity as an asset, as something desirable and beneficial! When viewed from this perspective valuing diversity is openness, fun, and can even be a cause for celebrating in discovering how we can join together to create more as a united team than any one of us can on our own. It is vital to business survival that the workplaces strive to attain this ideal collaboration.
Diversity, as it relates to thoughts, ideas, ethnicity, race, and a host of other areas, is the quintessential ingredient needed to establish a free nation. Amendment I of the United States Constitution states, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." Through this simple statement made so many years ago, the founding fathers laid down not only the framework for the basic freedoms that Americans cherish, but also the foundation for establishing a diverse nation. You see, without diversity, there cannot be freedom, and without freedom, there cannot be America.
Traditionally, diversity refers to an assortment of races, ethnicities, genders, ages, disabilities and perhaps sexual orientations. A definition of diversity, however, should not be constrained by traditional categories such as these. Such a definition should also include categories such as religion, educational level, life experience, geographic location, socio-economic background, marital status and work experience. Indeed, each person employed by a company possesses unique qualities that encompass many factors.
Diversity is a notion, when applied to the majority of circumstances, can create a positive conclusion. The trick to producing a positive outcome is often how the different aspects are brought together. Consider a classic dinner combination peas and carrots, the two colors look appealing and the two flavors comes together as one making a superb side dish. Now consider oil and water, these two substance are not often considered a good combination. Although, this is not always the case; olive oil and vinegar (which is water based) when mixed, come together into a delectable salad dressing. Diversity and inclusion should also apply to humans by bringing people together who are different it can creates a whole that is enhanced by the uniqueness of each individual.

Katz, while a professor at the University of Colorado, found babies as young as six-months of age stared significantly longer at photographs of adults who were of a different color than their parents.” It is clear that we notice differences but do we actually take the opportunity to teach each other about diversity, even as infants?

In today’s world diversity is considered to be one of the important factor in achieving success. Diversity is required in terms of gender, religion, age etc. We all are not perfect in what we do so the best way to fulfill this gap is to recruit the diverse population in the organization. For instance when we think about automobile industry then the first thing that comes in most of mind is men would be a good fit in that industry. Two hardworking female Ford plant managers Gloria Georger and Jan Allman has proved this concept wrong with their endless efforts. These two hardworking women have proved that to be successful one don’t need to go to that field which people thinks is made for women. They too believed that the idea of recruiting women in the plant has helped a lot to develop in terms of culture, values and belief. Recruiting women has contributed towards less conflict and more communication which directly effects the higher sales and increased the competitive advantages of car making (Jones, 2013, p. 15).
