From my expansive involvement both in and outside of school, I have discovered that my constant thirst for learning and my drive to achieve beyond my comfort zone will play a vital for university success. My self-motivation to improve persistently will therefore cause me to want to align all habits and work ethics in order to conquer goals. In every aspect of my daily life, I always ensure that I am reflecting my full potential, even if it translates to coming out of my shell. Along with extensive training, learning to embrace new challenges and communicate as a team has led to outstanding achievements at competitions. Because of my passion for this dance form, I also began taking on a leadership role by helping teach some of the junior classes at my studio, two years ago, for five hours a week. In addition, I am a long distance runner and have raced both representing my school in the cross-country team, and independently in half marathon events. My exceptional results in these events are due to the persistence and determination I demonstrate each time I train and compete. I have applied these strong work habits in my schooling as well. As a result, I have earned consistent academic honor rolls with distinction, as well as work ethics awards every year. In particular, I enjoy biology and human geography, due to my keen interest in how humans and the environment coexist. Throughout my education and community work, I have consistently proven my ambition, leadership skills, and dedication in every challenge presented. With each obstacle I encounter, it is my initial instinct to fully submerge myself until I am confident that I have given my 100%. For example, when I dared myself to complete a half marathon, I spent the following months waking up at 5, multiple times a week to train toward this goal. I dedicated my time, and ultimately my full effort, in order to fulfill my ambition. The role of a leader is often inaccurately defined as an individual who is in a position to give orders. However, there are enormous differences in the attributes of an outstanding leader, and one of mediocrity. An outstanding leader, above all else, is a role model for their peers. In doing so, a leader of the highest caliber is trustworthy in both their peer’s trust for the leader as well as the leader’s trust of their peers. For me to be an effective leader, I must first evaluate my strengths. I took the Gallup 2.0 Strength Finder report which showed my strengths in an insight and action planning guide. The results indicated the top five themes for me were input, learner, responsibility, maximizer and arranger. I believe the evaluation offered an accurate assessment of my strengths. The input theme states my mind is like a sponge, soaking up information. As a lifelong learner, the second theme is also, correct. I have a quest for knowledge about things that interest me. I am responsible, in my job and life. As a maximizer, I focus on long term goals and strive toward excellence. As a nurse, working in an environment of change, the arranger strength in my personality allows me to adapt easily and figure out the best way to accomplish tasks (Strengths, 2012).
In many formal and informal settings, we have often heard the word “leadership”. Although this term is found in many textbooks, writings, news clippings, college level courses and papers, leadership is a concept that is consistently evolving. Leadership isn’t an attribute that individuals are born with. Although individuals are born with certain characteristics and traits of a leader, those traits are honed throughout the course of a lifetime.
Leadership is not a role which should be readily appointed to someone nor can it be successfully thrust upon the shoulders of just any individual. It is a characteristic that is acquired, developed and honed through a varying multitude of life experiences and lessons learned. This includes personal and professional experiences, forethought and vision and the ability to aptly conceptualize and value the necessary ingredients of positive leadership.
The general personality traits, which are related to success both in and outside the workplace, are all inherent in my answers given in the Leadership Assessment Quiz. With statements such as, “it is easy for me to compliment others” and “team members listen to me when I speak,” it is apparent I possess these characteristics. Whereas my task- related personality traits associated with successful leadership, such as courage, still need to be developed. Leaders can have a powerful impact on the futures of many, and the way in which one approaches leadership is paramount to the type of impact one will have. Continual growth in the areas of knowledge I have and seek to acquire, as well as recognizing my leadership style and utilizing my personal strengths to the fullest, is vital to the successful implementation of my personal philosophy of leadership.
There are several qualities to have to be successful in college. These qualities can range from attending class to going above and beyond what’s expected. Success comes from the journey taken or the path chosen. Success also comes from being prepared. As a student, I must step up to the challenge and find the path to success along the way. Several ways I define success is to uphold academic integrity, have the ability to prioritize, and to motivate myself to stay on top of what needs to be accomplished.
Throughout my life I have encountered the chance to experience position of being a leader.
