Leadership is one of those words that can be defined differently by each person. There are so many different type of leadership theories, there is not just “one” right one. Each different theory brings something new to the table. The term leadership has four distinct characteristics that each of the theorists have agreed on. The first is that leadership is a process, it is a transactional event that causes interaction between individuals. Leadership is not one certain trait or characteristic that a leader possesses, it is a process. The second characteristic is influence over others, it is how the leader affects the followers. This trait is the essence of leadership. Leadership occurring in groups is the third characteristic because to have …show more content…
When the time to fill out college and scholarship applications rolled around, a common question started to appear in almost every form “what does leadership mean to you?”. I really struggled defining this word until I considered why I was in leadership roles in my school and organizations. I defined leadership as wanting to play a bigger role in something I was passionate about. It was about caring so much about an organization or club that you were willing to accept extra responsibility and work to make it succeed. My definition of leadership has been tweaked from senior year of high school to my sophomore year of college. I still believe that leadership is wanting to play a bigger part in something you are passionate about but also being able to direct and inspire others towards a common goal. I realized that you can want to play a bigger part in your work or an organization because you are passionate about it, but that does not make you a leader. You must be able to influence other people within you group to accomplish certain goals. I believe the goals of a leader should be wanting to make their work or organization successful while also helping their followers reach their full potential. As a leader, you want outcomes and progress within your work or organization, you should want to see it succeed. I think you should also …show more content…
It is a type of leadership that depends on the followers and the situation they are given. There are four different type of leadership style; directing, coaching, supporting, and delegating. There is not one type of style that trumps the other, they each are beneficial to each of the different situations. The leadership style and the development level of followers are what being measured through this approach in a graph. The leadership style is measured on how much support and direction you are giving the followers. For example, if you have a follower that is super excited about a project but has no experience, then she would need a directing type of leadership because she has the drive to complete the project, she just needs instruction. The leadership skills are based on the situation while the development levels are based the follower and their needs. They measure a follower’s competence and commitment, if a follower is lacking one of these areas, then the leader should adjust their leadership style to improve what they are lacking. I believe this is the best leadership strategy because it takes a true leader that is willingly to alter their style to meet the needs of their followers and help them reach their full potential. These leaders go out of their way to make sure their followers and their organization succeed. This type of leadership style requires a little more
Throughout this class, we learned that leadership can be defined in many ways by different authors. The definitions depend on many things and different variables. One way of we can attempt to define is through characteristics of the leader, the followers, and the situation (Yukl, 2013). Yukl, 2013 defines leadership as being “the process of influencing others to understand and agree about what needs to be done and how to do it, and the process of facilitating individual and collective efforts to accomplish shared objectives” (Yukl, 2013 p.7). The character of the leader influences situations and followers in different ways. The characteristics of the followers also call for a different type of leadership style
Before you can summarize the concepts related to leadership theory, you have to define what leadership is. Leadership is a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task or goals. The fundamental concept of leadership is indirection. In any organization, the leader indirectly impacts the performance of the organization through the performance of individual team members. To make that impact, the leader takes on the role of the coach, and the inspiratory. As the coach, the leader improves the performer's skills. As the inspiratory, the leader inspires the passion required for optimal performance. A good leader can make decisions with a clear mind and will listen to theirs but can run through every consequence and possibility in their head. They take every angle and come out with the best answer for the majority of the people or situations it effects. And will not let their emotions be shut off but will have feeling where it is needed.
Leadership is a process by which an individual influences others to accomplish a mutual objective and most scholars can agree that leadership can be defined as the nature of the influencing process. Leaders carry out this process by applying their leadership attributes, such as beliefs, values, ethics, character, knowledge, and ski...
The common thing, character or factor in the above definitions of leadership is influence; influence is a very important characteristic in leadership. Influence is changing or altering the perception of other people to achieve a set out goal (Yukl, 2006, as cited in Mumford, 2010). Influencing others (subjects, colleagues, etc.) is how leaders lead because without influence, there is no leadership (Bacon, 2011). Know when and how to use it….. Other characteristics of leadership include honesty, confidence, ability to delegate, creativity, ability to inspire others, integrity, fearlessness, respect for other, etc.
Leadership has many definitions even though these definitions are merely a change of words (Northouse, 2016). The definition that covers most examples of leadership is the ability to influence your subordinates in such a way that your subordinates follow your orders and see the vision you have for your team (Northouse, 2016). Leaders are not born, however some of the characteristics that allow a follower to lead one day may be inherited (Storsletten, 2015). Leaders are obtained from the environment of the individual, such as when the son of the King eventually takes the throne (Northouse, 2016).
Leadership is the procedure of influencing others to comprehend and concur about what should be done and how to do it, and the procedure of encouraging individual and aggregate endeavors to achieve shared targets/goals.
According to Northouse 2010, Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal. By this definition, a leader is a person who rules or guides or inspires or influences others. A leader is someone other people are willing to follow, almost without question. A leader may not always make the right decision, but are confident in the decisions that they make. Leaders are not afraid to admit when they are wrong, they accepts responsibility and a leader know when to change direction when a wrong choice has been made. For, even after a few mistakes, a true leader will not lose the confidence of his or her followers; he will rally the followers to move together while creating opportunities for doing the right thing.
Vince Lombardi once said, “Leadership is not just one quality, but rather a blend of many qualities; and while no one individual possesses all of the needed talents that go into leadership, each man can develop a combination to make him a leader.” A person needs many qualities to become a great leader. Throughout history, four qualities have remained constant: vision, communication, fixed principles, and confidence.
A leader is a person who has the abilities to manipulate attitudes, perception and conduct of others. There particular traits that a leader should possess to be effective in serving his or her team members. An effective leader should have an honorable character which makes him or her trustworthy to lead others with integrity and honesty. A good leader should display good character and trustworthiness which make him or her be entrusted with the responsibility for others. A good leader should be enthusiastic with their work and their role as a leader. Team members needs a person to person their can source inspiration from and a motivator towards the required course of action. He or she should shows dedication and passion while working with a team towards achieving their goal. (Peter, N.G, 2009)
The most important character trait for a leader is their ability to move and motivate the people that they are attempting to lead. If a leader is without this skill they will not have the capability to guide a group of people to the future that they have planned out. My personal favorite leader Martin Luther King Jr. is the ideal example for motivating others. He inspired thousands with his “I have a dream speech” which led to the reform of government policy on segregation. He touched on the hearts of everyone which an authentic leader will do when they speak with his or her
The meaning of leadership and the styles and concepts it takes to be an effective leader. A great leader is one who influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal. There are three major types of leader styles; Democratic which is the type to include their group members. The autocratic, which is the type to pretty much, are bossy. And lastly the Laissez-Faire, which one pretty much does their own thing and guides them to hopefully finishing the task. With all the different leadership styles come the six characteristics that help build ideal leaders no matter what style is used.
There are eight main traits that an effective leader must possess. Intelligence, Knowledge & expertise, maturity, high energy, self-confidence, integrity & honesty, stress tolerance and dominance. These traits allow for a well-rounded leader that is capable of managing people and dealing with almost any situation.
Define the word leadership can be a perplexing endeavor, due to the varying context that the term leadership can be associated with. This is especially difficult when trying to put it in your own words. To me, leadership, or one who is placed in a leadership role, is one who leads by example, and does not refrain from making and owning decisions regardless of results or consequence. Further, leadership traits are inherent, and cannot be learned; either you have them or you don’t.
Leadership has different meaning to various authors. (Bass, 1981) Leadership is defined as influence, that is, the art or process of influencing people so that they will strive willingly and enthusiastically toward the achievement of group goals ideally, people should be encouraged to develop not only willingness to work but also willingness to work with zeal and confidence. Zeal is ardor, earnestness, and intensity in the execution of work; confidence reflects experience and technical ability. Leaders act to help a group attain objectives through the maximum application of its capabilities. They do not stand behind a group to push and prod, they place themselves before the group as they facilitate progress and inspire the group to accomplish organizational goals.
The most important quality that differentiates a leader from other people is the ability to think strategically. Vision is the most important aspect that drives a leader’s strategy. It is all about where you want to be. Other qualities include Decision making, problem solving, time management, self-motivation, emotional intelligence and many more. Once we know the type of leadership, it is easy to find what leadership skills we have and which we need to develop which is explained in the book “Leadership: Theory, application, skill development (5th ed.) by Lussier and Achua.” Also, Keirsey Style Sorter personality type helps to knowing our temperament type, and work on our weakness and to emerge out as a good leader.
