Abstract The meaning of leadership and the styles and concepts it takes to be an effective leader. A great leader is one who influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal. There are three major types of leader styles; Democratic which is the type to include their group members. The autocratic, which is the type to pretty much, are bossy. And lastly the Laissez-Faire, which one pretty much does their own thing and guides them to hopefully finishing the task. With all the different leadership styles come the six characteristics that help build ideal leaders no matter what style is used. These leaders are also known as participative leaders, this style is usually one of the most effective and leads to higher productivity, and tends to increase group moral (Northouse, 2012). Some characteristics of this leadership are: they encourage members to share ideas, opinion, even though leaders have final say. This helps members feel more engaged in the process and creativity is encouraged and rewarded (Leadership , 2004). There are many characteristics that the Democratic leaders posses however with characteristics there comes benefit and downfalls. First benefit is since there is involvement of the decisions and problem solving from the members of the team Democratic leaders can better ideas and can come up with more creative solutions. This way the team is more likely to be committed, and involved with the projects that are assigned. The leader should act for the people and the victory should be shared. Glorification of the leader is bad because it makes the followers wonder why they worked so hard just to not be recognized. It is therefore defined as a process whereby a leader influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal (Northouse, 2013). A leader has to make a decision for something to happen and provide his followers with clear direction (Rost et al, 1991). It will evoke feelings of challenge, excitement and involvement for the followers to proceed with the task (Gill, 2006).
Nelson Mandela is an example of a person who showed a participative leadership style. The Study.com (2015) website states this style tries to change the traditional hierarchical management by incorporating a democratic dimension. As previously stated, a participative leader will consult and seek out the ideas and opinions of the team, but ultimately he/she will make the final decision. A person who employs this leadership style knows that by just being a leader it does not mean that they know everything. That is why they like to have skillful team members to help the team be successful. According to the University of Kent (n.d.) “this style is not a sign of weakness but more of a sign of strength that your team will respect” (Explanation of different leadership styles). Participative leadership style is best used when quality is more important than productivity and the organization allows for flexibility and a sense of individual responsibility. A positive of this leadership style is that team members will feel like they are a part of the team and that they have a hand in the task at hand. This style breeds a sense of team work thus motivating individuals to work hard. Of the five leadership styles, groups led by a participative leader are most consistent in quality and productivity. In contrast, if the leader is weak and not confident, this style of leadership can result in a lack of decision.
According to our text the leader encourages and assists discussion and group decision making. Human relations and teamwork are the focus. The leader shares responsibility with the followers by involving them in decision making (Huber, 2014). This participative democratic leadership style is directly connected with the situational leadership theory. The situational theory approach focuses on observed behaviors of leaders and how leadership styles can be matched to situations (Huber, 2014). I believe these two styles are connected because a person who is a participative democratic leader will check with the group in regards to a policy/problem/situation, and will make a decision based off feedback but also off what is best for the group in general. A participative democratic leader does not always choose the option the group does, but bases things off of situations as they occur. Therefore, the situational theory directly connects to this leadership style. Both the leadership style and leadership theory are representative of me. For example, when I am at work on my unit and I am in charge, I will ask everyone who they want as patients with regards to the assignment. However, the final decision is made by me to ensure that everyone has a balanced assignment, and one nurse is not carrying a heavier patient load. Other

This type of leadership requires everyone to work together as a team. Each member of the team is encouraged to set goals that are reachable with this type of leadership in the work environment. When the democrat leadership is the type used the employer is more likely to keep their employees for longer periods due to employees feeling like they are important and able to have input in decision making.
At some point in each person life, they will be required to lead others. For some this can be an exciting thought, while for others it can provoke fear and questions of capability. No matter a person’s reaction to this inevitable reality the unanimous response would be that generally people want to lead others well. In order to be prepared to lead people it is valued for a person to know what qualities can be found in an effective leader. Important characteristics a good leader has been shown to possess are being caring, innovative, and responsible.

People are always following what the next person is doing and never sticking out and starting something new. We rarely ever have anybody that takes lead of something or is a natural born leader, but that is a requirement that must be made by the president. Leadership means that you show pride , you have people looking up to you, your loyal, and you that lead people. I think that the president which showed that the most was George Washington.
What is leadership? Leadership is defined as a process by which a individual will influence others to obtain goals. Leaders will guide, direct motivate, or inspire others. Leadership is defined by not only traits but actions as well. Leaders are inspirational, trustworthy and charismatic. Many people may think a manger is leader. Although leadership and management go hand in hand, they are not the same. Everyone has their own beliefs about what characteristics an effective leader should have. To me, communication skills, critical thinking skills, and having a vision are few characteristics of becoming an effective leader. A leader is not only born, but made. Some are born as leaders or some are made to be leaders.
There are a few different types of well known leadership styles, authoritarian, delegative, and democratic. To assess my leadership style I used two online tests to help me determine my style. I felt the results were accurate and I fall into a democratic style/participative style. If I am leading I prefer to include the group and get their feedback on solving issues. However, I still make the final decision after listening to the thoughts of the group on a particular topic. This is considered to be a positive style of leadership that is inspiring to the group involved. The leaders decision making tends to be more accurate due to the input of other experts. (Cite)
