Inspiring Others Great leaders have been around since the start of primitive civilization. Examples of said leaders are George Washington, Martin Luther King Jr., Adolph Hitler, and Alexander the Great. Despite the different areas and different views that these leaders may have had, they all had a few character traits that can be considered to be the same such as the ability to stimulate, adapt and persevere, and to stick with their primary principles. Every single one of these traits is hard to come by in a single person because they are difficult to learn but have to be instinctive and natural to a true leader. It takes a creative and determined person to be able have this characteristic because some situations may seem impossible to fix and would need an innovative way to turn it into a gain. Odyssey’s Trojan horse plan to invade the Trojans was a brilliant plan that allowed them to infiltrate their impregnable fortress without detection or loss of manpower. His plan was ingenious because they would have never suspected for the Greek forces to be lying in wait to ambush them while they slept which in turn leads to their victory in the …show more content…

The most important character trait for a leader is their ability to move and motivate the people that they are attempting to lead. If a leader is without this skill they will not have the capability to guide a group of people to the future that they have planned out. My personal favorite leader Martin Luther King Jr. is the ideal example for motivating others. He inspired thousands with his “I have a dream speech” which led to the reform of government policy on segregation. He touched on the hearts of everyone which an authentic leader will do when they speak with his or her
Throughout Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey, the reader or viewer has the opportunity to see the story’s main protagonist make leadership decisions, and take actions, that range from critical to minor in terms of importance. But the fact is that Odysseus is a leader. And that is the key thing to keep in mind no matter how you experience the poem. Inevitably, when you are talking about leaders, the questions arise: is he or she good or bad? What is the metric and what is your method of evaluation? In this case, we’ll look at Odysseus’ performance through a modern leadership lens, while keeping in mind that Homeric Greek culture might have motivated him to act differently than he would have today.
Every Leader is defined by his or her qualities and characteristics. These can determine how effective a leader has become. This statement has been true throughout the history of mankind. However, there are only a handful of specific qualities that can truly determine if someone is an effective leader.
“I suppose leadership at one time meant muscles; but today it means getting along with people.” This quote by Mahatma Gandhi illustrates Odysseus’ leadership in The Odyssey by Homer. In The Odyssey, Odysseus has just finished fighting the Trojan War and is heading home. Along his way, he encounters many things including: the Laestrygonians, Cyclopes, Circe, the Sirens, Calypso, Aeolus, Helios, his worst enemy Poseidon (the god of the seas), and he also runs into Hades. Throughout these challenges, it is evident that Odysseus is not a good leader. The greatest weakness for any leader is pride, something Odysseus has too much of. Odysseus does not make smart decisions; he lacks good communication skills. Overall, Odysseus is a bad leader and he should be criticized as a leader.
Leaders are the basis of modern day society. A leader is necessary to keep the citizens in order, and make sure they pertain to the rules. However what happens when there is no leader? Then there is mass chaos, no one is in charge and thus the average citizen is allowed to do anything that they want. Homer displays this in The Odyssey, where the breakdown of society is caused by the loss of a leader, and that causes chaos, aggression, and selfishness from the characters.
"'Leadership is solving problems. The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help or concluded you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership,'" (Colin Powell). In the article "23 Traits of a Good Leader" the author, Rachel Farrell speaks about different types of leaders, how every leader is different, and reveals the twenty-three traits of a good leader. In the article "Seven Personal Characteristics of a Good Leader", the author, Barbara White informs the reader on the seven qualities of a good leader and explains each characteristic in detail. In Homer's, The Odyssey, the main character Odysseus displays many leadership traits, one of these traits being courage when he encounters the alluring Sirens in the book of "The Sirens". The second characteristic of a leader that Odysseus exhibits in The Odyssey is fearlessness, when he confronts the Cyclops who is a lot more preponderant than himself. The third and final leadership quality that Odysseus presents in The Odyssey is staying calm in times of crisis, because he remains calm when the crew confront Scylla and Charybdis when the rest of his crew is frightened and panicking. In the epic The Odyssey, Odysseus displays the qualities of a good leader.
Leaders do not just appear out of thin air and automatically start making great things happen in the world. A leader must learn from prior leaders or role models that they are surrounded by that they look up to. Not everyone can be a leader, only some people have the correct characteristics it takes to lead others in the right direction. Those who do great things, for example volunteering at a homeless shelter, are not leaders. Many people mistake a “great person” as being a leader, which is completely incorrect (Kouzes and Posner, p. 3). While playing an active role in your community is a positive thing it does not make someone a leader of that community. All leaders have a group of people they have inspiration too and that is a good way of determining who your personal leaders are. My mother, brother, and grandfather are my leaders because I have always looked up to them and tried to mimic some of the great things that I have seen them do. My mother has always been an independent women with goals and an action plan to accomplish those set goals. Stephen, my elder brother, is outgoing and tends to have a leveled head when it comes to evaluating stressful situations. My grandfather is the most caring person I know and he is amazing at keeping situations under control in order to please everyone. These are all the qualities I want to combine into my own leadership style. I know I am not a efficient leader of these actions yet, but I plan on growing into this as I more on into my career, fulfill my set goals, and adjust to the curve-balls that life throws at me.
In the Odessey, Odyssues is shown and proven to have the proper traits for a good leader. Homer in a way tried his best to capture the fact that Odysseus knew his place when it came to being a leader, and knew what he had to do to keep everyone safe. He had to show his respect to the gods and kept his promise all throughout the story. A leader should be able to communicate effectively to their followers, lead everyone to safety, treat everyone equally, and know the difference between good and bad. Odysseus knew that in order to respect the gods he couldn’t eat the cattle.
Barack Obama, Lance Armstrong, Hitler, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Martin Luther King Jr. These are some of the millions upon millions of leaders that have been great leaders through the past, present and in the future. These leaders were the first into my head when I think about great leaders. All of these men & women were magnificent leaders and continue to make impressions on the world today. There have been billions of leaders to walk this very earth but there are some questions to ask. How many of these leaders were/are great leaders? What makes a great leader? Who is the greatest leader of all? When I was asked to think of the most inspirational leader that I look up to, none of these popped into my head but Kent McKown, my father, did. I believe a great leader should have skills/characteristics such as honesty, intuition, passion and the ability to inspire.
There are eight main traits that an effective leader must possess. Intelligence, Knowledge & expertise, maturity, high energy, self-confidence, integrity & honesty, stress tolerance and dominance. These traits allow for a well-rounded leader that is capable of managing people and dealing with almost any situation.
Throughout history, there have been leaders who are considered as admirable due to positive influences over other individuals. For example, in my opinion, Abraham Lincoln was able to influence the masses of people because he chose to think and behave differently from other leaders before him. When a person is considered as a leader, there are several responsibilities and qualities that will attract others to follow after the teachings that are demonstrated. Leadership can be described as the process for “guiding individuals, groups, and entire organizations in establishing goals and sustaining action to support goals (Shockley-Zalabak, 2015, p. 220). Additionally, each leader will usually have a distinctive
... that an individual can possess however; there are three effective leadership traits that one must possess. Which are the ability to get along with others and build teams, the ability to make sound and timely decisions and the ability to get things done? Not all leaders possess these, which in turn make them less of an effective leader. However, I believe that Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela possessed all three traits and some. These leaders lead by example and was exemplary in doing so.
To be a leader you need to be able to inspire others, get people motivated, and set an example to other people. A leader needs to do all of these because if one of these aspects fails people don’t look at the leader...
I believe that there are three main character traits that define a good leader; their ability to move a nation with their speeches, their ability to think about and plan for the future of their people and nation, and their ability to be able to command the nation 's forces correctly. All good and well defining character traits that I believe that Adolf Hitler possessed when he came to power in Germany during January 1933.
One of the most important components of leadership is the leader. A leader is responsible for his or her followers and the overall goal of the group or organization. Leaders are the people held accountable or everything that happens, good or bad. On the other hand, the second major component of leadership is the followers. Without followers, a leader would be worthless. Followers make up the backbone of a leader because they are the masses that get goals accomplished. A leader is just one person, but the number of followers is countless. In order to be an effective follower, there are a countless number of characteristics that allow a follower to be the best they can be. Five of these characteristics include a positive attitude, communication skills, being part of the process, being open to new ideas, and patience.
In my view most important character of a good leader is that they must be compassionate. Having a personality of caring about people is important. You can?t be a good leader unless you generally like people. That is how you bring out the best in them. No matter what credential they have and how much experience they have in administration but without being compassionate they can't ever become a responsible and successful leader. For example Hitler is known for his cruelty and he had no feelings for his own race. He failed to understand the feelings of Jews and thus persecuted them. He also failed to know the fact that the strength of his country lies in them, while opposite is Mahatma Gandhi, a major political and spiritual leader of India, followed nonviolent actions, avoiding any bloodshed in the country during their struggle for Independence. Because of his compassionate nature many leaders in today's world has looked him upon. So leader must be compassionate first without being influence by any ulterior motive.
