Visual Analysis essay of Royals by Lorde
In the music video, Royals Lorde opens with a rolling shot through the suburbs, which immediately strikes a strong use of ethos. It continues on with a portrait view of Lorde and she begins to sing in a house alone. A teenage boy then appears who is believed to live in the house which Lorde is now singing in. He seems to be bored or depressed as it cuts back and forth between the boy, Lorde singing and, the house itself to separate that there is time between the two people in the same house. It continues with Lorde singing “We don't care, we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams” and shows the boy slowing getting out of boredom and becoming more interested in boxing. Royals proceeds to show the millenniums

and music lovers the boy putting in hard work and dedication towards boxing to be a successful Boxer as she sings “let me live that luxury.” The boy is then seen with a brother or close friend along for the ride to their success’s.
Lorde sings “My friends and I we’ve cracked the code” directly showing the two boys challenging and motivating each other to become better Boxers. The boy has finally made friends and it shows the friends all together, he realizes he does not belong there and feels disappointed. Royals closes with the boy on a train with the look of defeat than a cut to the same shot of the suburbs from the first of the video. Lorde is delivering this music video for her song Royals to the millennials for the message of the song to have a lasting impact on the listener. Lorde is saying that even if you're from a suburb with an average life and your dreams don't come true, life is still what you make of it, you get what you give. She is using the rhetorical strategies of logos, pathos and, ethos to increase her impact on the audience, …show more content…
the millennials and pop culture fanatics. Lorde starts her video of Royals by striking on pathos, the rhetorical strategy of emotion, propelled at the millennials almost throughout the entire duration of the video. She uses the suburbs as a dreary setting for a depressed boy to live in. Lorde strengthens this setting’s tone by singing about “postcode envy.” Day after day the boy does the same thing and has very little excitement in his life. Lorde sings “and we’ll never be royals” giving the feeling of doubt. Right off the bat, she sets us up with doubt not only in him but within ourselves as well, very strong use of pathos She uses pathos to support her ideology that most of the time your big dreams won't come true. Royals show the use of the rhetorical strategy logos by showing the viewers the boy putting work and devotion into his new found hobby a very logical fact that people who are the best work long and hard and truly do deserve to be the best.
People who put in hard work to be the best get the most glory from it as well,Lorde sing “we don't care / were driving Cadillacs in our dreams” telling us that the boy is determined to become successful. Lorde then continues to sing “My friends and I we've cracked the code” where Lorde supports her claim that the people in your life are more important that riches and fame and even if your dreams don't come true you are still in control to make your life awesome given the situation you're
in. Lorde also known as Ella Yelich-O’Connor is a twenty-year-old singer from New Zealand she uses the rhetorical strategy of ethos as she is a 2-time grammy award winner and one of the youngest female artists to have a number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100. Her song Royal won a grammy for Grammy of the Year and Best Pop solo Performance. She uses the rhetorical use of ethos in the music video Royals to deliver her message to the millennials and Pop Culture fanatics to be happy with their lives and make the best of it. She makes the audience feel that the boy went back to home but it didn't feel like the end. We saw him get up and become successful so we hope he can do it again. He made the best of his life he had and even though it didn't work out he still accomplished something. Lorde’s music video for Royals was a very emotional uphill battled which ended in defeat, but it instilled a reassurance that you can achieve anything you set your mind too. She does this through the pathos of the background the boy had, the ethos of the platform Lorde has to share her video and, logos with his hard work and dedication to boxing, he became successful and happy you get what you give out of live and hard work and dedication will hopefully pay off.
To Dance at the Palais Royale written by Janet McNaughton, is an exciting historical fiction novel that follows Agnes Maxwell on her adventures in the big city of Toronto. McNaughton’s novel is an accurate description of the technology available and fashion trends of the late 1920s. She includes many details in her novel such as the refrigerator, which was accurately described. McNaughton incorporates the use of the Victrola, a popular phonograph used in the 1920s and Agnes Maxwell has the chance to wear a beautiful dancing dress typical of the time period. To Dance at the Palais Royale is a historically accurate novel that authentically describes technology and fashion typical of the late 1920s.
Though the significant difference in the setting, but equally in the subject of separation, the authors, Bass, and Stuphen, communicate their thoughts mainly through imagery of the situations that happened in their lives. In the poems “The Albatross” by Kate Bass and “Ever After” by Joyce Sutphen, in the book 180 More: Extraordinary Poems for Every Day, they use metaphoric language to expose their feelings. They capture the frustration of being apart from their partners and the urge to understand why the man that the woman in the poem loves is now strange and no longer has any part in their present. Shawn Lewis explains, “Next to the death of a loved one the death of a marriage is one of life 's most devastating experiences.... When the pain
“you’re not supposed to be here” the first thing you here as the video opens up, “you’re not supposed to be here” that sentence easily gets manifested in your head. If someone says it enough times the person going after their dreams will start to believe this is true in this case, it was LeBron James. This is a form of ethos; it is your character and what you are supposed to believe whether it’s because everyone else says it or not. LeBron James for example and the other kids in the commercial could become
It leads to the second verse where she says, “..find out what he wants, be that girl for a month..” She delivers another message on how she will let you have her in false pretence for a short period of time, and then turn around and leave him. It leads to a different approach in the story - where now everything turns around. She now starts to fight, with scenes showing her reacting to the lover’s text with someone else, with her also tearing down the painting that she drew of him, etc. One of the main parts of the video - lyrically and musically, comes at the bridge. She declares a straight message - “boys only want love if it’s torture, don’t say I didn’t warn you” Again she does a great job in playing the double role - of being the lead telling the audience and viewers a message and warning to the boys and girls - that guys only want love if it’s full of hardships and fighting from the girl and from the relationship itself. It gives us further meaning behind the scene, where it could be that the artist wants to portrays pathos through the character in our heads that Taylor Swift believes that love can be reached with both good and bad together in
“Riot” - Three Days Grace : The song also talks about how “if [they] feel so angry, so ripped off, so stepped on” then they should start a riot. This could be used to describe Sampson and Gregory at the beginning of Act One, Scene One. They are angry, because of the heat and the Capulets just provoke them even more when they show up. They may also feel like the capulets are stepping on them just because of the rivalry between the two families, which is why they want to fight even more.
In Audre Lorde’s essay she describes the erotic as a resource and a power that lies in all of us (women). She also mentions that the erotic is an “internal sense of satisfaction” and a “measure between the beginnings of our sense of self and the chaos of our strongest feelings” (Lorde 54). For many years, men have used the erotic against women, but Lorde mentions that once we experience it, we recognize its power and can use that feeling in various endeavors, which brings us “closest to that fullness” (Lorde 55). In this way, the erotic, used correctly, acts as a resource because women no longer fall into the trap formed by men and can feel the true strength of the erotic rather than being used against it. The social conditions and misunderstandings that block the erotic are torn down and women finally recognize its full
In the late 1990’s Nsync blew up radio stations and television programs with their songs and videos. Not long after, fans knew the exact choreography to the songs like ‘Tearing up my Heart’ and ‘Bye Bye Bye’. Although Nsync is strong, Backstreet’s ‘I Want it That Way’ shaped future music videos and boy bands to use similar components. An example of this 2010’s boy band, Big Time Rush’s video for ‘Worldwide’.
The video is a true visual reputation of the song showing Soupy struggle and guilt of Soupy trying to save his friend through facial expression and through the lyrics matching the tone of the video like “ staring at a hole in your chest that's been dug there for decades, american broken promises, caught between the lies you've been fed and a war with your bloodstream, I should have been there when you needed a friend,I was off on my own again, selfish and stupid” or "...I know I failed you... I want those
Art provokes oneself to express a feeling that one has encountered in their lifetime and allows the artist to display their masterpiece for an observer to connect to. Artist Berthe Morisot once said, “It is important to express oneself… provided the feelings are real and are taken from your own experience”. With the usage of movements, hues, sounds, shapes, or methods articulated in words, an artist can communicate his or her beliefs by making emotional connections to their audience. Art allows individuals to express themselves in creative ways that can bring many individuals closer by having a connection. In Aldous Huxley’s novel, Brave New World, nearly everyone is conditioned in the modern world to show the impact of what art can influence
...job of telling the story in a natural and realistic fashion. The cast is largely female and there are recurring vertical pan shots that scan cleavage throughout the film; subtly hinting a lesbian intrigue that would otherwise be perceived as friendship. The costumes of the females close to the queen are overall flesh-revealing and slightly point towards the queen sexual desires for the females around her. The casting of the queen, played by Diane Kruger, is of great attention as well. During the events depicted in the film, Queen Marie Antoinette was almost 34 years old. Kruger was 35 years old during the making of this film. The queen was Austrian; and Krugar is German. Krugar is fluent in French but the mere fact that she is not French represents her as foreigner for the people of France and in this context makes her seem vulnerable even before she utters a word.
As I enter the Gioconda and Joseph King Gallery at the Norton Museum of Art the first thing that Caught my attention was a painting measuring approximately at 4 ft. by 10 ft. on the side wall in a well- light area. As I further examine the painting the first thing I notice is that it has super realism. It also has color, texture, implied space, stopped time, and that it is a representational piece. The foreign man sitting on the chair next to a bed has a disturbed look on his face and is deep into his own thoughts. It’s as if someone he loved dearly just experienced a tragic and untimely death. He is in early depression. I could feel the pain depicted in his eyes. A book titled The Unquiet Grave lying open on the floor by the unmade bed suggesting something is left unresolved. The scattered photos and papers by the bedside cause redintegration. The picture of Medusa’s head screaming on the headboard is a silent scream filled with anger and pain, yet it cannot be heard. I feel as if I am in the one sitting in the chair and I can feel the anger, and regret.
Imagery in literature brings a story to life for the reader. It draws the reader in and surrounds them with the environment of the narrative. The use of imagery will make the reader fully understand the circumstances under which the characters of a story live. In "The Yellow Wallpaper", by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, the narrator of the story often describes the wallpaper, each time giving more details. The vivid descriptions allow the reader into the psyche of the narrator, which illustrates her ever-deepening mental illness. The imagery presented in the wallpaper through the narrator's words show her descent into insanity coupled with her desire for independence.
This music video is told from the perspective of the queen. She has no king and is searching for an equal. A group of men come to her bearing gifts to show they are worthy of such an honor. If the gift is not sufficient Perry uses her dark magic upon the man and transforms the man into an object. Katy Perry is the center of attention and is always in the front of the camera. The
It is the centerpiece of a campaign including TV commercials, radio spots, online ads, magazine ads, billboards, social media promotion, and transit system ads. In the video promo, the words on the screen say “Within each of us is the power to be more than we are, to be strong, to be wise, to be passionate, to be brave, to become something legendary. This is your moment. Rise to the challenge. Heroes Within.”
The song “All Stars” was created by a music group named Smash Mouth. All Stars is about a man who had a terrible life. At the beginning it tells you a dark story. The singer starts getting addicted to bad things, such as drugs. The sing was following what other people do. When the singer started making clean decisions, he showed everyone what he could do. People might have thought he was a loser, but he didn’t listen to them. He showed off his creativity and he stopped his bad habits. Overall, the singer is trying to say,” don’t follow others and be yourself.” The entire song is full of literary devices, such as similes, a lot of hyperboles, metaphors, imagery, and personification.
