The most important thing I have learned about working in a group in Spine classes this semester is the importance of communication to be able to work efficiently and cohesively. Communication is not only important for developing trust between group members, but also for co-operation, remaining goal-oriented and progressing (Terry, 2013). I feel like a lack of sufficient communication negatively affected some of our group activities, which allowed me the opportunity to learn from our mistakes. Our group did not all exchange cell-phone numbers until week 9, so communication was limited to class time, pre-organised meetings and Facebook. On a few occasions, our group opted not to meet up on a Wednesday afternoon and instead we individually contributed our allocation of the work to a google doc and communicated mostly online. It has been found that ‘virtual’ team work has benefits such as flexibility over time, increased contribution from all members, better idea generation and convenience (Levi, 2013). Although these benefits were observed to some extent, I personally also felt like virtual interactions did not provide the same motivation and group synergy as a physical meeting and this has been observed in other studies (Kirkman, Rosen, Gibson, Tesluk, & McPherson, 2002). I also felt that because everyone was doing their own work separately, the end product was less cohesive than if we had just collaborated and communicated as we progressed through steps together. This would also have enabled all group members to have the same level of understanding of the concepts (Rebori, 2000) to make presentations and future activities easier to coordinate. A particular example of where I found communication via virtual mediums to be detrimental to our groups’ progression was during the report write up for assignment 2, where one of our members contributed their delegated sections to the online document, however because English isn’t their first language, there was confusion over what they were trying to convey. Due to the lack of social ingenuity, not only was it difficult for the group members to communicate with each other, but it was difficult for the class to communicate with as a whole. For example, when trying to connect group two’s individual Rube Goldberg to our individual Rube Goldberg, we found some difficulties here due to the height difference between both of the machines. Group two machines were taller than ours, which made it difficult to connect both contraptions. As a group, the teammate in group two came up with a solution to lower their machine on a chair which then lowered the height of their machine and evened out the machines. In the end, both machines were able to connect properly and we were able to continue the project.

I started this project very excited and interested in different decisions I’d be able to make and choose for a virtual child. I want to be a parent at some point in time, so I found this project to be very influential and helpful for me. Throughout the simulation, I made choices and decisions based on what both my parents and I would do, particularly leaning toward a stricter parenting style in order to keep the child in line with good morals and a strong background. I enjoyed this assignment, and I expect to remember certain decisions I made when I may become a real parent.

Another thing that is challenging, the virtual teaming typically lengthens the work day for virtual team members, and time zone dispersion narrows the window for synchronous team interaction. Multitasking is a common strategy during meetings that can distract members to such an extent that they may miss an opportunity to provide valuable input. Equally, the focus of virtual team members is often diluted by their local tasks and priorities. If the local priorities override the time that the team members had planned to devote to team assignments or meetings, process loss may result in team work requiring more time than planned, and this is not so good to team bonding especially when there are members of the team who did their homework well.
Key to any group is the communication of its members. Realizing that we would be working together for a full quarter, the team members were quick to exchange cell phone numbers and email addresses. The cell phone numbers were key as texting proved to be the most efficient method to ask and answer quick questions from other group members while we were on the go and dealing with other aspects of our lives.

When working on a group project, there are certain skills that are required to make sure that the tasks are being carried out smoothly. With that in mind, it is critical to keep an open line of communication as well as an understanding of the other individuals in the group. The following scenario is of a group project I was a part of that had a breakdown in the two points expressed above.
In a team-oriented setting, everyone contributes to how well the group succeeds overall. You work with fellow members of the group to complete the work that needs to be done. Having the right people in the correct roles is an important factor in measuring the success of a team, where you are united with the other members to complete the main goals. Every group is made up of definite strengths and weaknesses. Our team's 3-5 major strengths necessary to work accordingly consist of Informer, Summarizer, Orienter, Piggy-Backer, and Encourager. One of our strengths as a team is that we get input from everyone involved. Every member of our team is a leader in some way. Part of being a good leader is knowing how important it is to receive the best ideas from each member of their team. We attend group meetings where we discuss any challenges, issues, and problems. At these meetings, we often exchange ideas or brainstorm new ones with each other and come up with the best and most creative team solutions as potential answers to those perceived problems.
From the beginning, where we were unfamiliar with each other and became a team, my team and I had started to learn each other name and getting to know each other. Throughout each meeting, we slowly start to feel more comfortable and open minded with each other. Not only are we getting familiar with each other, each meeting that was held we progress of becoming an effective team member, we learn our strengths and weaknesses of everyone. During the meetings, we learn many concepts from the textbook, “Communicating in Small Groups: Principles and Practices” by Steven A. Beebe and John T. Masterson. The first task my learning team was confronted with was coming up with an effective method of communicating. "High-performing teams have extensive communication mechanisms. They communicate regularly with each other wither in person, via telephone, or through e-mail and keep those unable to attend meetings informed of the group's progress." (Teams in the Workplace, Pg. 317) We decided to use an Instant Messenger chat for its real time communication and message logging ability to allow us to keep those not able to make the chat informed.
Working in groups is challenging at times. Other times it is very rewarding. We are so focused on life that we do not take time to reflect on things as much as we should. Being in a Groups class has opened my eyes to a whole new world. I have begun to question, explore, and even understand how things work. I even get how they work sometimes. Not only is there a process involved in making individual decisions, process is involved in group decisions as well. This paper attempts give insight into my reflection of my group decision process.
