As I planed to take this class, I thought this course would be like all other general education courses. I believed that it would be of little use to me. However, after attending the first class, my view has changed completely. I applied each and every theory to my life.
Communication is continuously disregarded and overlooked, however the skill to communicate efficiently is mandatory to articulating concepts, feelings and diffusing ideas. Stated by Stacey Huish (2013) “Communication is the process of transferring information from a sender to a receiver with the use of a medium in which the communicated information is understood by both the sender and receiver”. Effective communication particularly in a nursing context, is substantial as all nurses are anticipated to develop a sense of agency and use their interaction with patients to support and provide assistance effectively. Upon analyzing two distinct scenarios based on a nurse’s communication towards a patient, it can be made apparent the effective and non-effective practices in communication, as well as the effective or ineffective techniques to client interaction, impact the competence of one’s communication which either provides poor or adequate communication. The foremost concepts of communication evident in each scenario is body language, eye contact and lack of communication. As a social worker it is important to have basic communication skills in order to connect with clients. There are six basic and four advanced skills that are used in direct practice to make communication more effective. The basic skills include reflection of feelings, paraphrasing, open ended questions, closed ended questions, clarification and attending behaviors. Advanced skills consist of summarization, information giving, interpretation and confrontation. Not only is it important to know what these skills are, it is also important to know what the appropriate and inappropriate uses are. It is also important to self-reflect on your use of these skills, and whether it is a strength or something to continue to work to improve on.
During the course of this semester; the variety of writing styles and essays assigned to me in my communication skills class encouraged the development of my writing skills, as well as provided me with more self-assurance in my abilities. My writing, research, and presentation abilities enhanced through practice, determination, and the understanding I gained during this course. With every single writing assignment, I learned new innovative approaches and skills, which enhanced my abilities to improve my thoughts logically, enabling me to write more clearly, and to organize my papers more effectively. At the beginning of this semester; despite the fact that I already knew the terminology MAP: message, audience, purpose; I never really understood the significance of MAP. For this reason, my writing lacked clarity, organization, and my writings appeared less focused on the topics. As a result my research papers and essays did not flow as smoothly from one passage to the next. Furthermore, I was unaccustomed with the precise procedures used when writing an essay. For instance, my previous classes before college, although requiring a reference page, did not require me to include proper citations in my writings. After evaluating the quality of my writing toward the end of the semester, I recognized vast improvements in several areas of my writing. By concentrating on the beginning stages of my writings, I could distinguish ahead of time my audience and my message. As a result, my essays are clear, and I remain on topic. In addition to that using transition phrases efficiently also helps my writing to flow smoothly. The proper use of transitions makes my writings easy to follow from one topic to the next. When a person approaches you with conversation, they should always feel comfort knowing they are being listened to. I believe in this generation, even with myself, I sometimes have trouble giving my full attention in certain situations. These days people are so eager to let someone finish speaking so they can say what they want to say, rather than take in what they are being told and respond to it directly. This is something that I believe everyone, including myself should work on. Also, you should acknowledge what someone is telling you and clarify when you are confused in order to avoid making mindless errors which can lead to assumptions, or if you work in a medical work place even cause misdiagnoses or assessments. An example that many people may notice in their daily conversations of non-therapeutic communication is when one person is always changing topics during the conversation to something they’d rather talk about, or even judging others on their opinions especially before they can explain why they see something a certain way. The verbal communication goal is to encourage the client to fully express the changes and wants of set outcomes established. Both verbal and non- communication can have an impact on the client once interaction is met. Non-verbal communication consists of body language, facial expressions, closeness, and eye contact (Schore, 2008).
