One of the most important skills you can have in order to thrive, in not only your personal relationships, but in your work and school environment is being able to communicate properly. There are many factors that contribute to being able to interact successfully. In this paper I will discuss non-verbal and verbal language; and I will explain how I use them in my daily life and its importance in my future career. I will also go over whether or not my actions are assertive or non-assertive since this is a big factor in whether or not you appear to be confident in your job or personal conversations and in order to put your client at ease. There are many types of non-verbal communications and some of them may be gestures, posture, facial expressions, eye contact and appearance. This is important since it can make you appear confident and competent in your workplace. Appearance is showing up to work, school, or wherever it may be, prepared, in proper attire and with personal hygiene needs met. This can help build a relationship between your client since looking clean helps the person feel like you are organized and that you are the right person to be assigned to help them. Eye contact, however is something I do need to work on since I get anxious at times with confrontation. This is important to fix because it helps show the other person that you are focused and paying attention to them. Facial expressions are important since whenever something arises on the job that displeases you, you should respect the client’s decisions or rights and try your best to not let your personal emotions appear on your face. When a person approaches you with conversation, they should always feel comfort knowing they are being listened to. I believe in this generation, even with myself, I sometimes have trouble giving my full attention in certain situations. These days people are so eager to let someone finish speaking so they can say what they want to say, rather than take in what they are being told and respond to it directly. This is something that I believe everyone, including myself should work on. Also, you should acknowledge what someone is telling you and clarify when you are confused in order to avoid making mindless errors which can lead to assumptions, or if you work in a medical work place even cause misdiagnoses or assessments. An example that many people may notice in their daily conversations of non-therapeutic communication is when one person is always changing topics during the conversation to something they’d rather talk about, or even judging others on their opinions especially before they can explain why they see something a certain way. To be successful in business, one must be able to perceive and use nonverbal cues to one’s advantage. It has been noted by communication experts that when two people have face-to-face communication only a small percentage of the message is delivered through the words they use. The majority of the message is understood and received through nonverbal communication behaviors. These behaviors include gestures, postures, facial expressions, and even clothing; all of which can interfere with the verbal messages that a person is trying to deliver. Although, the importance of nonverbal cues has not been examined extensively in the workplace, it makes sense that they would have a strong impact on any communication both in and out of the realm of business. From telephone calls to advertising billboards, communication is ubiquitous. Communication essentially refers to the generation and receiving of messages across a variety of contexts, channels, media, and cultures. Not only does bad listening skills affect your relationships with people, it also is a disadvantage in your professional life. It can affect your performance at school and at work. For example, it is hard for me to sit and pay attention in class because I cannot focus on what the professor is saying. My mind usually wanders off and because of that I have to put in extra time outside of class to learn the classroom material. This is the reason why I prefer online course over classroom courses.
