My experience as a Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) student has been commendable as well as an inspirational landmark. The mere fact that VCU allowed me the opportunity to obtain a master’s degree in social work, offered me a reviving spirit that I did not know was lost within myself. Each day I spent on campus was encompassed with cultural heritage, friends, challenges, and resiliency.
Initially, I believed I was not the traditional student, and I would not make connections with fellow classmates. I was almost forty, African-American, single-parent, low socioeconomic status, and lived 100 miles away. I thought I would go each day and embrace myself for the two-year journey of social work education. After the first few days at the University, my thoughts were proven to be false. I saw a nation of diverse individuals on one campus achieving education with an observed presence of contentment. There were times I was even acknowledged by my name. VCU had become my second home and its presence was well received. The VCU inspiration and atmosphere transferred into my ambition for learning. I studied vigorously and challenged myself to achieve a 4.0. I was inspired by a professor who stated “we were enough by our mere presence in this class”, this quote became my logo for the last two years. I met some of the most heartfelt people some for a moment, season, and others for a lifetime.
