Every character used in their commercials signifies attractiveness beside immense talents and abilities. They are quite young, attractive and an admired group that society gets easily impressed by. The good vibe seems to emerge while the characters work with a sense of passion, something not commonly found in other working places. Everything expressed by these commercials, are important ways that show how consumer behavior is controlled, how our decisions can be affected simply by some nice pictures, and how people think that by being part of that service or by buying that specific product they can be as glamorous as the characters in the commercial. What are the aspects of an underwear advertisement that make us want to buy them? “Hanes Her Way” by Brittany Gray, a freshman at Virginia Commonwealth University, analyzes an underwear advertisement by Hanes. Gray describes the starting scene as a “mild, relaxed morning.” She goes on to describe the music being played, “Fade Into You” by Mazzy Star and acknowledges that the soft ballad complements the pleasant setting. As the male actor speaks about how his wife’s white cotton underwear reminds him of his mother and his childhood, the commercial “fades out on the Hanes trademark.” By describing the commercial in detail, and backing up her statements with evidence, Gray states that this commercial depicts the fantasy of women well enough to make them want to buy the product.
These feelings are conveyed by the reader because the spokesperson is someone like them, who works for the things they have, and is living an honest life. The spokesperson speaks to the audience as if she is a coworker, because she wants the reader to understand that she is like them. The relationship that is shared with the audience is achieved by the friendly tone and atmosphere in the commercial. By making the viewer feel like they can connect with the spokesperson, the commercial was able to spark the interest of the readers. The relationship created with the audience was helpful because now that the reader has a connection to the spokesperson, there is now trust there that will make the audience look fondly on the Ford car. Superheroes and villains are not commonly associated with airlines, but in the article “A Tale of Two Airlines” by Christopher Elliot, it is put into a different perspective. The two airlines in question are Spirit and Southwest. Although both have some similarities, they both have considerably different views on how to treat customers. Southwest practices treating customers with respect, while fares may be a little higher. Spirit’s beliefs are to treat customers “like cargo” with lower fares. With their friendly attendants and better overall customer interaction, this appoints Southwest as the hero, making Spirit our villain. Elliot makes his point by exclaiming the “heroes” should be rewarded with a higher multitude of passengers and the “villains” should not be granted this satisfaction.

In addition, I value advertisements that are not geared toward just sales. Personally, when an advertisement is all about making the sale it turns me away from the product. I do like CoverGirl’s ad a little more than I did, however if I had to choose between Maybelline and CoverGirl I would still go with Maybelline. Knowing CoverGirl made an emotional connection with the delicious lipstick and relating it to the delicious ice cream was clever and I appreciate it.
