One of the biggest problems faced with the use of technology in the classroom is that teachers do not know how to integrate it within the classroom. Often this caused by a lack of technology skills. An article by Arzu Arikan (2007) titled Retelling the Story: Official Tales of Technology and Head Start Teachers Technophobia focused on how the insufficient knowledge of technology has resulted in the improper use of it by classroom teachers. This has resulted in frustration among teachers and students and non-meaningful classroom experiences. In the article Arikan explored ways to support teachers learning of technology and how to integrate it in the classroom. The main way to support teachers Arikan found was changing assumptions about using and learning technology and finding innovative ways to introduce to students and incorporate in the classroom.

The article also has five technology tips on using technology in the classroom and teachers becoming comfortable and knowledgeable about use. The first tip was conducting mini lessons for quick training of new technology introduced to a classroom. The article discusses a study done in 2013. The study consisted of five different schools in Chile where teachers were using Khan Academy. Four of the five schools were chosen from a non-profit network of schools that provide education to students from low-income families. These families pay approximately $25 a month to send their children to this school. The fifth school was a public school in Chile. The researchers wanted to know how Khan Academy was blending with classroom practices of teachers. So, the researchers interviewed teachers on their use of Khan Academy and their reflections on the website. The study was based on a theory by Vygotsky who believed that tools play an important role in the process of learning and interacting with others. In the study, Khan Academy was the tool being integrated with the established classroom environment. Researchers interviewed eight mathematics teachers to see how they were integrating Khan Academy into the mathematics classroom. According to the teachers, they carefully thought about whether or not Khan Academy was appropriate to use in the classroom. The role of technology in early childhood education is a controversial topic to both teachers and parents. The main concerns of both teachers and parents is the potential benefits for young children’s learning and development.. Supporters and non-supporters agree on the importance of young children’s social, emotional, cognitive and physical development. Supporters feel children should have the opportunity to use the computer as another tool to aide in and encourage their development. Non-supporters agree the computer may be a useful tool for young children but feel many teachers may not be using the computers in the best way to promote a healthy development in the child. They also contend that introducing the computer takes away from important learning experiences such as play and art (NWREL, 2001). School programs are now working on ways to better integrate computers into the classrooms in order to offer the young children the opportunities to develop the necessary skills to grow as students (Gimbert, 2004). The purpose of this research paper is to examine the controversies that surround technology use in early childhood classrooms.
Almost everyone attends a school at one time in their life whether the classroom includes technology or not. Research shows that technology isn’t used as often as one might think. The article, “High Access and Low use of technology in High School Classrooms” illustrates the use of technology by stating that only one in ten of elementary and middle school teachers are daily users of computers (Cuban, Kirkpatrick, Peck). Most schools now have classrooms that use technology throughout the entire class time and even at home to do homework. Although some people might agree with the use of technology in class, it is more harmful to the students than useful. It can cause many distractions, it can be difficult to use and can take away from learning time.

My philosophy of technology integration would be to include resources to my students to help improve their knowledge and understanding of the material being presented . Through including technology in the classroom a teacher can help students through different learning styles become engaged in the lesson. “If one learns best through careful examination of pictures or diagrams, then a message that is transmitted orally can be difficult and frustrating to understand and may therefore not be clearly received,” (Lever-Duffy & McDonald, 2008, pg 14).
Technology is a recent development that has been widely used in many fields to enhance productivity and output. For instance, it has been incorporated in the education sector to allow easier access to information. Mostly, technology in education has taken the form of using computers and related accessories like software to enhance the learning capacity, information access, and development of students’ learning capabilities. Throughout the last few years, technology has became less and less expensive thus finding it’s way into many homes across the globe for numerous reasons such as: entertainment, learning, communication, and connection. Most young people do not know what it is like to live without a cell phone or the internet and just as technology is making it’s way into homes, it is making it’s way into schools. And as with everything there is a downfall, children are becoming so addicted to technology there is an increasing rate of child health disorders; such as obesity and anxiety. But when we look at the positive side effects, children are becoming more socially and emotionally confident, children with mental or learning disabilities have better chance at learning the content, and educational media is making it easier on teachers and students in schools. The positive impacts of technology in the education system are key in aiding teachers and administrators to meet the needs of all children and push them to their highest individual abilities. Through the vast realm of technology, children can explore the world through the use of the internet and technology to develop a sense self expression and identity.
