Understanding Executive Coaching.
Executive Coaching has been prevalent in different forms throughout history such as Socrates to Plato, Jisabai advising young Shivaji on strategy or Larry Page guiding Marissa Meyer of Yahoo. It is still relevant today because, although some people are born leaders, others need help to emerge as leaders. They need to be groomed and guided into realizing their full potential as leaders.
Contemporary Executive Coaching is a developmental tool for fast track or high potential executives who are transitioning to new roles or taking on additional responsibilities. Firstly it’s the Executive Coach, then the executive, then their relationship and finally the organizational support. Coach is the enabler and the guide so it is important he /she be experienced, trustworthy, trained in the right techniques and able to articulate and communicate well to nurture a relationship with the executive. Executive coaching’s success is hugely dependent on this relationship. It takes two to tango and therefore it is vital that the executive has a strong desire to change and learn from the coach.
