USC 101 & 102 Final Reflection My preferred major is mechanical engineering. Mechanical engineering is the broadest engineering field, involving the design of mechanical systems. These systems are used in a multitude of different fields such as manufacturing, aeronautics, nanotechnology, nuclear power production, heating and cooling. A primary focus is on thermodynamics, structural analysis, materials science, and kinematics. One instance where an experience in USC 101 or 102 helped me explore my preferred major was completely the Majors and Minors Scavenger Hunt. This gave me a more thorough look at the different majors and concentrations of engineering, as well as the classes I would need to take at North Carolina State University. I used this information throughout USC and in my everyday life, through my class selection. Another experience that helped me explore my intended major was completing the MBTI, which helped me determine my personality type, ENFJ. This personality test reassured my preference to extroversion, intuition, feelings, and judging; meaning I am a sociable enthusiastic, idealist harmonizer, who is warm, optimistic, and imaginative. As an engineer, I would have to be able to …show more content…
be sociable, to work with others, and imaginative, to come up with the different solutions to the set problem, Lastly, completing the Career Informational Interview provided the most insight on my attended major and provided a first hand experiences of mechanical engineers.
During my interview, I spoke with Keven Carpenter, founder of Porticos. Porticos is a mechanical engineering firm which specializes in product development. From attending this interview, I learned that mechanical engineering can be both rewarding and devastating. For example, most of the time, mechanical engineers in product development do not get patents and projects are often discarded. However, there are instances where a project became implemented in everyday technology and becomes patented. According to Kevin, this is an overwhelming rewarding experience, that many engineers and unable to participate
in. Becoming a mechanical engineer would not only me achieve a sustainable income job, it would also help me achieve my goals of changing lives through STEM fields and educating others. Mechanical engineers are designing new inventions to improve on and solve problems; these skills would allow me to help change the world through innovation. Also, becoming a mechanical engineer would allow me to work with others, allowing me to learn and teach through collaboration. Through attending Wake STEM Early College High School, I have been taught to be able to work with a large group of diverse people. One instant I realized that my experiences would be different that another’s, was when I went to an inspiring engineering conference. It was not difficult to see that there was a large difference in the male and female population at the event. This is an issue in most STEM fields, women are often found as the minority and are sometimes treated as such, through pay, project assignments, and workforce community. This is an issue throughout STEM fields, I will overcome this issue by working hard and inspiring young women that they can be whatever they want to do. By being enrolled in USC 101 and 102, as a junior, I learned many important insights about mechanical engineering and who I am as a person. However, I still have a lot more to learn in order to be successful in the workforce. For example, I need to work on my public speaking skills so that I will be able to portray and promote myself to others effectively. Some of the upcoming possible challenges for me with be finding an internship in a engineering field; most engineering internships are given to sophomores and juniors in college instead of high school students. I will do my best to overcome these challenges by applying to a large number of engineering internships and promoting myself in an appropriate, professional manner.
Texas A&M. I did some research and asked my fellow students about whether there is a major that combines both Business and Engineering, and I stumbled upon Industrial Distribution. I decided that was the best fit
When I took the MBTI, some of the things I knew about myself were reinforced, and I also learned some new things about myself and my personality. The four letter code that I received was ISTJ, representing introversion, sensing, thinking, and judging. I expected each of these preferences, and when I read the definition of each, it further strengthened my understanding of what my personality really means in “technical terms.” My four letter code came with titles such as the Duty Fulfiller, the Responsible Realist and the Inspector, names I also agree that pertain to myself. Some of the attributes of an ISTJ personality type include serious and quiet, dependable, well-organized, hard-working, goal-striving, determined, logic-based, orderly, and traditional. If I were asked to describe myself, I would more than likely use nearly all of these terms to do so, which goes to show how accurate this test was, for me at least. But, I also can pick out some challenges that may arise because of the personality type that I am. One example relates to being an introvert, who prefer to focus on one thing at a time.
I am currently an English 160 student who is hoping to move on to the next course, which is English 161. I understand the requirements for English 161. It require students to explore a topic in some depth and conduct independent research related to that topic. Conducting research allows students to learn what it is like to participate in academic culture, posing questions about important issues and developing an argument in response to what others have said. It expected students to learn the most valuable skill in college, which is critical thinking. Students have to be able to read challenging readings. Although I still have problems with English, I think I’m qualified to move on.
In COL 101 I have learned many new things about college. Since this is my first semester at college I did not really know where everything was. This class really helped me to learn new things about myself, including what resources are available to me, what my plan for the future is, and the many changes I have endured during this course.
I don’t know about you, but for me choosing a college degree and a career is extremely daunting. I don’t want to spend a lot of money on college and then figure out later the job doesn’t quite fit me. The Myers-Brigs personality assessment can be very helpful in narrowing down your career options. Today, I’ll show you an example of this by using my personality type. The book What’s My Type of Career, printed in 2010, by PhD Donna Dunning and award winning phycologist, author, and a member of the Myers-brigs training faculty. In her book, she states that by using your type, you can figure out in what environment you prefer to work in. This can help you narrow down career choices.
The liberal arts are becoming increasingly rare in schools and universities. However, Saint Catherine University makes it a priority to teach its students the core benefits to the liberal arts college. It requires students to take the course “The Reflective Woman” along with “Global Search for Justice” as an introduction and conclusion to a liberal arts education. Throughout this semester I became more knowledgeable on what the liberal arts truly are, honed my reflective judgment, developed my writing skills, and I now have a deeper and defined sense of self.

Engineers have the potential to turn dreams into reality, which is why I decided to major in Computer Engineering. I want to be a computer programmer to make new app, or be a hardware engineer to design new devices to serve the society.
The Exploratory Major is ideal for students who are considering majors in multiple colleges or schools. Students deciding
My chosen major is Psychology and Pre-Law. Psychology is defined as the study of the mind and behavior and how someone or a group of people think. I chose Psychology because during my middle school and high school years, I always studied how people would act and was always able to identify certain events or actions that trigger someone 's emotions or behavior to change. Most of the people I used to study was the people I had class with because most of them I saw every day and known them throughout my middle and high school years. Over the years, I learn the things that triggered changes in their attitude and behavior. I was able to identify when one of them was angry. When one was upset and didn 't want to bet bother and when one wanted to fight someone. After awhile, I realized that if I can be able to understand my classmates, then I know I can understand and help people as my career profession.
I will be able to use my science and math skills to help solve everyday problems around our world. One of my goals in college is to become an intern for an engineering company, so I may gain some well needed experience. After I graduate college I will then strive to have a well enjoyable job, where I can help improve the daily lives of citizens everywhere. There are many different types of engineers. To determine my discipline, I focused on my interest, because this is going to be my job for many years.
I have chosen to major in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics because of my experiences in high school. I had the opportunity to work for a radio station during the summers. At school, I took engineering classes all four years. I was able to work on amplifiers, microcontrollers, and other electrical components. I have grown
Choosing a major is never an easy work. I have to know and understand the major in the first place, and then seek the value of learning that major. Based on my own experience, I have to get clear with the subjects that I need to learn. Most importantly, what is my future going to be if I choose that major as the direction of my life. As an electrical engineering student, I believe that the technology surrounds us will continue to expand and engineers will lead the way.
Electrical engineering is the major that I am pursuing during my college career. I decided to pursue this major because it is a career, which requires knowledge in other subjects, it is a career, which changes often, and everyday it provides a person with new problems to solve.
When I started my college career, I had an idea in mind. It was “I want a computer science degree!”, and I have to say, after this first term, that thought has not changed. I mean, not enough time has passed to consider changing major at this point. According to Clifton, Anderson & Schreiner (2006) “anywhere from 60 to 85% of entering college students change their major at least one” (p. 236). I hope not to be part of this statistic. I hope to continue on through with the major that I have chosen.
