I am applying for the CCCSFAAA scholarship. I am the first one in my family to attend college. As an independent student, without my parents' support, I had to work to support myself. Life is not easy for the new immigrant. When I just come to the United States, English is my second language, I am not fluent in English, I can only do some low-income job. Later, I find out that I need more education and improve my English, so I go to ELAC. This is the 4th year I am in ELAC. The first 3 years, I work full time and go to school part time. However, due to the schedule of some classes, and I want to transfer to a university earlier, I quit my full-time job and try to spend more time on education. Once I owned a computer I realized that there are a lot of things I can do with computers besides gaming. Nowadays, computers are so important to our jobs and lives. This influenced me to want to get a job working with computers. Computers make our life easier and more convenient. Something that cannot happen before, now with computer skills, everything seems to be possible. Engineers have the potential to turn dreams into reality, which is why I decided to major in Computer Engineering. I want to be a computer programmer to make new app, or be a hardware engineer to design new devices to serve the society. My plan is after I graduated from ELAC, I want to transfer to Cal Poly Pomona. I want to go to a school that focus on hands-on project, connected with the job market, not theory. At that time, I will still be a full-time student, part-time worker. Computers have changed our lives in many, many different ways. We do a lot of things from computers and our portable devices such as get music, watch videos, pay bills, order dinner, keep connected with friends on social media sites like Facebook or Twitter, take college classes online, and many other things that I could make a 5 page list of all the things it can help us do straight from home but that would bore you to death. Now that I have told you how computers have changed our lives and how they are used in daily life, let me tell you the importance of the people working in computers and IT. These people are very important because without them who would you go to for help with your computer, make sure your information is safe, get viruses off your computer and keep it safe for kids from being attacked? That’s right, you wouldn’t be able to do any of this.
I chose to pursue on being a computer hardware engineer because I like taking apart and building computers and I would like to be able to construct some components that would go into a computer. I am kind of fascinated on how much there is to know about computers to even buy parts yourself and build it. Later on, I will start to study on what computer hardware engineers really do on their jobs. I know they usually work in groups because the task computer hardware engineers have will usually be really hard to do alone. When I am in college, I will most likely get an internship to gain practical experience.
If I am going to be completely honest I need to express my true reason for applying for the USDA scholarship. For starters, I am tired of relying on my family to help me pay for college, I want to take more responsibility for my schooling. My mother is the one who pays for my tuition since my father is now unemployed and I will not take money from him until he is fully able to support himself. This situation does not really sit well with my mother, because unlike my sister she received help from both our parents during her schooling. I have always been interested and intrigued by computers, ever since using a BBC when I was very young. Since then I have become fluent in writing BASIC and more recently I have learnt HTML, the language of the World Wide Web on which I have my own wesite. I use computers for most of my exam coursework such as Solving Equations Using Numerical Methods for Pure Maths 2 and also for recreation.
An opportunity for this immense amount is not given every day. I am the first generation to ever go to college and to be born in the United States. I would love to receive this opportunity and make my family proud. I have been academically and personally challenged throughout my high school career. Engineering has been a key interest of mine since childhood. While still in grade school I enjoyed listening to my father, an electrical engineer, teach me about advances in technology, and was always eager to hear more. I did not fail any of my classes and instead received good grades for my perseverance. As an immigrant to a new country, my greatest barrier is English. Consequently, I had to go to tutoring and work three times more than native English speaking students. But despite the frustrations, I never allowed myself to give up. I never stopped striving for excellence. I worked very hard and took advantage of extra credit opportunities, even though I was already earning a good grade in the course. My short-term academic goals are graduating from Cosumnes River College in Spring 2019 with an Associate of Science degree.
