6:15 AM. Wake up. Twitter. Brushes teeth. Gets dressed. Twitter. Grabs keys. Gets to school. Twitter. Think about it. How many times a day do you check your Twitter account? Why is it so hard for some people to resist this form of social interaction? Why is it that it seems easier to make connections with others through this site, than it is in a situation where actual face-to-face interaction is involved? There are so many questions, yet not many answers. With 313 million active users, Twitter has not only become a site for mass communication, but has also served as an outlet of mass media, providing news as well as an opportunity for others to express their feelings on any topic of their preference (Twitter, 2016). With its mission statement …show more content…
Stop, will you? Stop, Dave. Will you stop, Dave?”(Carr, 2008). Now replace the name “Dave” with any person who is addicted to using Twitter. This is the exact thoughts that usually go through their head at some point in time, at least from personal experience. The idea of a world where nothing is inaccessible, and where free speech is actually free, is rare, therefore, it excites us. However, we tend to take the use of Twitter to the extreme. The hackneyed saying that too much of anything is not good for you definitely proves relevant when it comes to excessive use of any social media site for that matter. It is evident that our society, especially this generation, abuses Twitter. Whether it is as simple as using the site too many times in a day, or abuse in the sense that it is being tarnished by harsh misuse, it is evident that there remains a prevalent issue. As a community, we all acknowledge that technology has taken over our social lives. Nownwhether you believe that it has enhanced or deteriorated communication is subjective, however, means to restrain from actually using sites like Twitter have been very limited. Although it is prevalent that there is a problem, we still find ourselves tweeting as soon as the opportunity presents …show more content…
According to Carr (2008) in reference to Google, the fact that our generation has learned to rely and spend most of our time on the internet has its pros and cons. Yes, depending on who you follow, Twitter can expand your knowledge, but simultaneously it may be slowing down our ability to process information. The quote “I have almost totally lost the ability to read and absorb a longish article on the web or in print” remains relevant in this sense as well (Carr, 2008). Due to Twitter’s 140 character limit, the information that we are receiving is very brief and condensed. To support Carr’s argument, it is evident that the younger generation would rather surf the web and social media sites to find a straight forward answer rather than reading a lengthy article to obtain the same information plus more. “It almost seems that they go online to avoid reading in the traditional sense” (Carr,
In the article “ I Tweet, Therefore I Am” (2010), Peggy Orenstein explains that social media such as twitter can express who you are as a person and make you come to the realization of how your life is defined. Orenstein supports this explanation by giving her own personal experience on her twitter experiment. The author’s purpose is to point out that not all people who are hooked to social media have lost the disconnection of feelings along with relationships between people. Orenstein writes in a reflective tone for students and adults.
Whether walking down the street, at a party, or even looking through the App Store, chances are the name "Twitter ' has stood out. Twitter is a social media site that allows it 's users to post news updates in real time, socialize with other users, or even just to view the most recent events going on in the world. It can be used as a modern-day newspaper, a text-messaging service, or even a blog. In David Carr 's article, "Why Twitter Will Endure", the main topic of discussion is how long this utility would last among us. In his article, Carr clearly and eloquently expressed his views on why Twitter will endure, through the use of his own ethos and logos.
“Nothing is perfect.” Though social media brings us uncountable convenience, there is a trade-off with the convenience. Due to the advanced technology we have, social media has become part of our life, which it means that social media could determine our sociability. In Peggy Orenstein’s “I Tweet, Therefore I Am,” though she praises Tweeter for its convenience, at the same time, she also worries that “(Tweeter) makes the greasepaint permanent, blurring the lines not only between public and private but also between the authentic and contrived self.” Since we don’t care about who we talk to, we might act abnormally due to our feelings, and
This is because the effects of the medium on a personal and social scale as the extension of us can result from a new scale that is introduced into our lives by the extension of ourselves and by any kind of new technology (McLuhan, 1964, p. 7). In this case, the medium could be twitter. Created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams, twitter has proven to be the largest source of breaking news and social networking site. Since its beginnings, twitter is the medium
Social media is a revolution, which we are currently experiencing. It has changed the way people communicate and interact with one another, and opens up many more avenues to share news, information, and just general chit chat. Social media is relatively quiet young, but is here to stay for the foreseeable future. We are now at a point where online, we can share, read and react to lots of individual information being posted on microblogging websites, such as Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Tumblr and more. Twitter in particular has been widely embraced, and will centre most of the discussion.
Twitter is a social media app that is on the rise right now. Twitter can be seen as a modern day Facebook; the concept is the exact same but there are a few differences. Twitter lets their users posts their thoughts in 140 characters or less, and that is called a “tweet” (very similar to a status update in Facebook). These “tweets” can include photos, a GIF, or a video. Like Facebook you can share this information to your “Facebook friends”, but in this case it’s called your “followers”. Instead of adding people you know, you are able to follow random people which means random people have the ability to follow you. You also have the ability to “retweet” (similar to “sharing” something on Facebook) and “favorite” (similar to liking something on Facebook) other accounts tweets. You also have the ability to direct message someone on the app. The app has 310 million month active users, but a total of 1.3 billion accounts have been created. Also there are a total of 500 million Tweets sent each day which comes to about 6,000 tweets every second (Smith,
To begin with, social media has been proven to be a dangerous addiction due to the many negative side effects like: sleep deprivation, and self-esteem problems. Most of the adult American population is connected to some sort of social media site, and they have joined the banned wagon of people whom check their social media accounts at least five times a day. Using social media to often can be time consuming and essentially causes sleep deprivation because the user stays up late on social media. Since social media has grown in popularity many have began to believe that social media is a life necessity. It is viewed by many as a daily necessity like brushing our teeth, or yet as important as eating. People whom are constantly on social media have been linked to develop self-esteem problems because they are so consumed on pretending and portraying this image of a person they are not. Social media has became such an addiction that many people wake up and the first thing they do is...
Social Media has evolved magnificently since the first email sent in 1971. Social media is any form of website or application which enables us to share content with one another with a simple sharing tool. Social media has become an addiction for most, if you were to ask the average student if they were connected to a social networking site, about 73 percent would reply with a yes. In addition, about 63 percent of people log on to a social media site daily and on average 40 percent log on multiple times a day. Everyone has their own reasons for the use of social media, which could include shopping, research, or other personal reasons like venting and status updates.
Lets take a look at how Twitter has changed the gathering, delivery and consumption of news. Looking at tactics of the influence of social media and the people has been known to be called navigating news online. “Facebook news users get more news from friends and family and see it as news they might well have gotten someplace else if Facebook did not exist. For Twitter users, though, the news links come from a more even mix of family and friends and news organizations. Most of these users also feel that without Twitter, they would have missed this kind of news”(Pew Research Center). Instead
Social media has become a major epidemic in today’s society. According to millions of people have signed up on social media websites, allowing their basic information to be shared with the world wide web. Two of the biggest social media websites today are Facebook and Twitter. The new generation tends to use Twitter over Facebook, the older generation prefer Facebook over Twitter. Though Facebook and Twitter serve the same purpose and have many similarities, they both differ in many ways.
Everywhere someone looks there is someone else talking on the phone, texting their friend, or just surfing the web. Laptops, E-Readers, smartphones, and tablets are used every day by most of America. Whether it is for work, school, or entertainment an electronic device is supposedly needed to live everyday life. There has never been a generation to live without electronic devices. Nobody actually lived until these items were invented. Oh the horror! Teenagers in today’s society have a nightly routine that happens before they fall asleep. First, the teenager gets on Instagram and scrolls through their feed, liking posts as they go and making various comments to themselves about the pictures. Once they are all caught up on that, they pop open Snapchat. They check for new snaps and then go look at their friends’ snap stories. After looking at what everybody is doing that night, they randomly look at their friends’ best friends on Snapchat. After they are done cyber stalking Snapchat best friends, they close out of that and open up Twitter. Twitter is where most of their time is spent. They scroll through recent tweets and if they find one they really like, they retweet it or favorite it. If they see someone retweet someone else and are wondering who that person is, then they go and cyber stalk them. This is the never-ending process of Twitter. This happens all before a teenager falls asleep. Little do they know that this
Social media although a great tool can become an addiction ultimately affecting our lives and state of mind. That is why we need to limit the amount of time and information we share on social networks. Although the internet is a tool full of good and bad available to everyone, teenagers and young adults are more prone to falling into the traps of the internet. People also abuse social media and overuse it every day because they are concerned with what is happening every hour. Social media is a tool not a necessity and should never be abused or used as a diary because it could result in unwanted consequences that can hurt us in the future.
With the way the world is now it should not be a surprise to anyone that social media has literally taken over the world in this day and age. From late 2008 to early 2009 the size of Facebook users doubled from 100 million to 200 million in eight months, and was already up to 400 million by early 2010. Twitter also raised its number of users in 2009 from 4.5 million to 20 million (Zandt). These numbers just show what Facebook and Twitter have accomplished. Other social media sites that are getting more and more popular are Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr, Pinterest, and many others social media websites that people use on a daily basis. With one in four people using social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, it is no wonder that all of these social media websites are considered to be important (Whiteman). With a few clicks of a button or taps on a screen, a person can be connected to family and friends in every corner of the world. Social media can even allow people to see what their favorite celebrities are doing with their lives. According to Honor Whiteman,”Social media defines an array of internet sites that enable people from all over the world to interact. This can be through discussion, photos, video and audio (Whiteman).” Social media is a beast in its own right that is used by a multitude of people all over the world everyday for things such as updating their Twitter status for personal use to updating a company 's Facebook page on a weekly basis. Yes, there is no doubt about it, social media has done its share of very good things, but there is also an entire list of the negative things about using these websites that can really make a person question if they should even be on them. Bhardwaj 1 Think of a time when people didn’t have technology and how they had to interact, whether it had been from writing letters to using telegraphs, communicating with people was hard to come by back then. Of course, times have changed and now technology has made it easier over the years, social media has become an essential part of our lives whether it be on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and many other websites. Nowadays, everybody is using it whether its companies using media to promote their products or even teachers tweeting out what last night’s homework was. Social media is a great tool that helps us connect with the world and communicate our ideas. Yet there are some people who believe that social media has a negative impact towards our society as they believe that people can get addicted to it, it causes them to get easily distracted, and many other dangers.
Social media, a quickly growing and popular knowledge outlet, can become dangerously addictive if the user lacks self-control. There are so many wonderful outcomes from the invention of social media. The biggest being how quickly news can spread. Anyone can share the news that they desire with a few taps on a screen. The fault in this action though, is that false testimonies can be spread just as quickly as true ones. The question is, does the positive outweigh the negative enough for a person to proceed with using social media? Without this innovative creation, though, communication would be dull and boring, so by all means, social media should be used.
