In the article “ I Tweet, Therefore I Am” (2010), Peggy Orenstein explains that social media such as twitter can express who you are as a person and make you come to the realization of how your life is defined. Orenstein supports this explanation by giving her own personal experience on her twitter experiment. The author’s purpose is to point out that not all people who are hooked to social media have lost the disconnection of feelings along with relationships between people. Orenstein writes in a reflective tone for students and adults. Orenstein’s experience with twitter wasn’t suppression, she claims it gave her the opportunity to discover her inner being. This effect of media technology is shown later in the article when Phelps-Roper began to create a significant relationship with the outside world. Through direct messaging and connecting on Twitter, Phelps-Roper began to create meaningful relationships with people that followed her and began to question what she really believes is true compared to the teachings of the Westboro Church. When actress Brittany Murphy died on December 20, 2009 Phelps-Roper was looking through her Twitter feed and saw how many people were mourning that she had died, and instead of going on Twitter to praise God for her death, she said “I felt like I would be such a jackass to go on and post something like that.” This showed the effect media technology had on Phelps-Roper because when she originally started tweeting she did not care what others thought but wanted to get the views of the Westboro Church out, but then after she had interacted with media technology she had changed. This is when her hesitance on this matter showed her growing compassion for the feelings of people outside of Westboro.
Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor gave a moving lecture on how she became who she is. To introduce herself, Jill informed the audience about her life choice of becoming a neuroanatomist, who studies the brain for the reason inspired by her brother’s diagnosis of Schizophrenia. Working as a supporter for the National Alliance for Mental Illness alongside her scientific career, she researched about severe mental illness, which led her to many questions, mainly asking, “how do different brains works for different individuals with different conditions?”. Jill then had the chance to answer this question on her own. The look on her face is fierce, and bold, which was the, the opposite of what a woman has been depicted as and expected to be by society’s standards; in this way, she was defying the concept of a stereotype of women, meaning that women were supposed to be soft housewives. Despite the hard look on her face, her strong arms, and her blue labor outfit, she is still feminine; she is wearing mascara, possibly a touch of eyeliner, and hints of blush and lipstick. Equally important, “The main colors of the poster are red, white, and blue, the background is a bright yellow, which was meant for highlighting Rosie and attracting viewers’ eyes…” All this was done specifically and intentionally to promote America in general, the war effort, and women in the workforce. Facebook, Twitter and other social platforms have become one of the central activities in human affairs. Used by people around the world promoting communication, social media gives scope to everyone to exhibit their ideas and thoughts. The plethora of social platforms is a revolutionary invention that is changing the way of how people moderate and communicate with others in their daily lives. Although many people admire this revolutionary concept, it can be argued that it has a negative impact on society. Extensive usage of social media can cause addiction, affecting productivity, and also reduce the level of human interaction, which in turn leads to isolation. Social media is correlated to many of the issues that revolve feminism and mental illness through anthropology, sociology and psychology.

My eyes have been opened to the superiority of living life beyond the internet medium; furthermore, I believe my fear of missing out is ultimately the root of my social media fixation and unplugging is the best remedy.
“I didn't know what Facebook was, and now that I do know what it is, I have to say, it sounds like a huge waste of time –Betty White (“Betty White Quotes,” 2014, para. 1).” This quote can be interpreted to fit with several of the social media avenues that many people spend their time on. Day in and day out people post, tweet, share, and pin countless times throughout the world. These different forms of communication were first created for an easier way for people to connect with others. Yet now, so much time is spent on these social sites that it has warped the interactive part and is causing more damage than good. Many are growing a desire and are living for the amount of “likes” they can receive on a post or how many re-tweets they can generate. Instead of going to these outlets to participate in a partial portion of their social lives, people are filling that time with the technological aspect of communication. As White said, this can become an inordinate amount of wasted time and can ultimately grow into further damaging circumstances. These different social media channels can cause emotional harm through disparaging the relationship between friends, conjuring of a narcissistic personality, and the retrogradation of ones self-esteem.

The use of social media is increasingly becoming the preferred way people share their daily activities, ideas and knowledge and that is why it’s the most talked about and used platform. Many companies are encouraging their employees to use various social media platforms and engage online for office productivity, posting opinions and presenting their thoughts. Corporations realize that Social Media tools such as blogs, forums, podcasts and social networking websites makes internal communications faster, more convenient and effective. Social media is a low-cost, high-impact tool that can also complement and reinforce your existing communications efforts. It gives a new dimension to internal communications in many ways: building relationship with employees, leads to diverse thinking and innovation, and reduce costs and Increase Productivity. Social media has impacted positively in the business world, but its downside has impacted teens in high school, with issues such as cyber bullying, and people using Facebook and twitter to get over their boredom and research proving that the more they use social networking websites the more envious they feel.
Social media is so popular that according to a recent article published by forbes.com, “72% of American adults are currently using social media sites; that figure has gone up 800% in just 8 years”(Olenski). Social networking was originally created to simply reconnect people with old high school pals, but in recent years it has evolved into a completely different operation. When social media first originated it was also intended for adult usage, which has in recent years expanded into the usage of all ages. Social media can create a negative affect on lives because it has been proven to be a dangerous addiction, for it takes away interpersonal relationships that are essential in life, and it has been proven to prevent people from being productive in life.

Exposing students to the power of social media in the classroom is an important part of preparing them to be active and positive digital citizens in a 21st century world. In the last two years, my own students have rapidly been drawn to Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and many other social networking platforms. They upload, share, and connect with others often without any regard to how their digital footprints may reflect them as individuals. Having continuous conversations with students about the choices that they make can lead to positive results. Students don't realize how powerful social media platforms can be in terms of networking, researching, and engaging in academic conversations. It makes me laugh every time I hear them whisper about my colleague Heather's or my Twitter feed. First of all kids, I can hear you. Second of all, yes, social media can be an amazing way to give and exchanged knowledge.
