Travel Scholarship Essay I feel more than honored to have the opportunity to participate in The Ailey School’s 6 week summer intensive. Over the course of those weeks, I want to work on consistency in my dancing. Since being enrolled at Towson, I have always approached class with a clean slate open to new discoveries. While this has given me a chance to explore my body and see what works for me, I find myself having a completely different class every day. My new perspective is to approach class with the intent to perform better than the day before. Taking the good from the previous class and applying it to the current class. Every class will still be different, but in a positive way. In addition, I know that in the past, I have had challenges …show more content…
The comp series here at Towson has taught me that dance is limitless. You can take who you are and your experiences and allow those things to influence how you dance. I trust that I will return with a new standpoint of influence. Towson stands by the motto of “dancing for a lifetime”. The reality of being a dancer is the fact that you will most likely end up teaching one day. At The Ailey School, I will experience different pedagogical methods, which will contribute to how I form my own. Alvin Ailey has influenced the lives of so many, not only will I be impacted by him, but I will be able to continue his legacy by taking what I have learned and sharing it with those whom I teach.
This past year I have become more and more interested in how dance and culture interact, and how one’s culture influence how they approach dance. Along with the technical aspect, I will have the chance to meet and interact with students and teachers from all over the world. Networking is key in the dance world. Being at the Ailey school will allow me to interact with potential partners, employers and mentors. Meeting these individual alone will last a
Ballroom dancing in New York gives underprivileged children the opportunity to be exposed to the arts, which is usually a program that is cut from low-income schools. This program is a part of a fine arts curriculum with a focus on movement/dancing. Alvin Ailey played a large role in the diversification and cultural storytelling that can be seen in modern dance today. With the founding of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, his dance company stands strong as one of the most respected and prosperous dance companies because of its artistic representation of the beauty that is otherwise known as the African culture. His work absolutely changed the atmosphere of modern dance because he was able to provide the modern dance community with a wider variety of content that had otherwise not been popularized before. Not only did he draw his inspiration from the African culture, but he also amalgamated this with his personal experience growing up as a black child during times of segregation.
As the first African-American to create a multicultural, international concert dance company, Alvin Ailey’s dance company has been dubbed the “cultural ambassador of the world” (Gorman 36). Through his Alvin Ailey Dance Company, he addressed the racism and injustice faced by ethnic minorities across the globe. Ailey clearly revolutionized African American participation in 20th century concert dance as well as revived interest in modern dance. As an extremely talented dancer and choreographer, Ailey’s success is attributed to his dedication and passion for expression through dance, but what is often overlooked is his resilience to the hardships he faced, the mentors he had, and the opportunities

Ailey was a well-known African-American choreographer and activist who founded the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1958 located in New York. What made Ailey so different from many choreographers at that time was his race and skin color because society condoned African-Americans practicing in the arts during his time. ...dance education is to continue growing throughout public schools and colleges in the United States, students, parents, and the rest of the community will need to stand behind their dance educators. Dance has always served a form of great exercise that allows people to express themselves through movement, and will continue to do so into the future. Dance education in the elementary level is a place that may need some help in child development, and the way to solve this problem is by getting classroom teachers who are skilled in dance and creative movement instruction. Dance education in the secondary level also needs to get highly skilled teachers who are also certified in dance themselves. It would also help attract more students if dance was presented in a different department other than physical education. Dance education in the college level is taught by certified dance instructors, therefore dancers in this level are able to explore movements, while being critiqued by someone who knows what is happening. Dance education has played a major role in the development of children of all ages, and will continue to do so, as long as dance educators and dancers have the proper support.

I appreciate dance more now because of this class. I appreciate dance more because I learned about the beginnings of dance. Me being a break dancer, I knew about the modern dances but never knew about the old stuff. Learning about the foundations of dance made me respect dance and dancers more. All that hard work done by dancers back in the day made dance what it is today.
I have been on two mission trips and both of them have left me with a feeling of urgency and a realization that so much more needs to be done in resepct to the Gospel being lived out and shared. It is also enlightening to see the difference in how my everyday life compares with other peoples' normal routine. They have so much less and yet they still have joy, they have been throug hso mcuh worse and yet they smile. The kids I have met are so strong and the people who work there are so compassioante. I'm glad you were able to go. I had heard about Mrs. Sturely and I am so sorry that she continues to struggle with this affliction. I am praying for her and your family.
When we first started talking about travel and tourism I had a very broad understanding of it. Thinking about it then, it was just defined to me as ‘getting away from home for a few days’. Understanding it now there are so many different definitions to tourism and they all have their pros and cons. I never really considered the three elements that I have heard belong in tourism and somehow those elements still fail to grasp the small meaning that travel can have on a person. To me travel can really open up parts of your personality that you may have forgotten, it gives you the feeling of being small, and can even restore your soul to find purpose. I know when I travel I’m often in wonder at the creations around me. Whether it’s from magnificent landscapes to different cultural wonders around the world I’m usually in awe at the magnitude of human existence and connection to
Travel usually involves movement of people between relatively distant geographically location or We can also define travel as “ A way of traversing through one geographic location to other it can be for short term or long term or it can be permanent or temporary.” Although many traveler writer and scholars have defined travel in different ways still its remain an eternal question and the way a traveller define is always different than a tourist and a tourist define it different than a salesman.
There is nothing quite like traveling, going someplace new and finding out more about the world and yourself. Anyone can become a traveler it just takes a little bit of faith and courage. Traveling across the world or even across the country is a learning experience. When you are a traveler you see how people live and how different cultures work. It is the best educational experience you could give yourself. You see how the world works in a way no one can teach you. Seeing different cultures and people help build the person you want to be. If you are a traveler the world influences you, because when traveling, you see the good and the bad, and you learn from the right and the wrong. I am very lucky that I am able to be a traveler and see this
