All the time I hear people say that “Safety is our number one priority,” but rarely do I ever feel that they mean it. When I look around my life there are too many examples of things that I see that just prove that safety is not what any of them are concerned with. This is especially true when I look at the driving hazard of streets I drive on every day. The Municipality of Monroeville’s Planning Commission board should vote to fix the potholes in the municipality by repaving the roads to improve the safety for the citizens driving. This issue is one that is affecting vehicle drivers all across the nation, but specifically needs to be fixed in my hometown of Monroeville, Pennsylvania. Because it affects the vast majority of people, many …show more content…
First of all, when someone is being rescued in an ambulance, hitting a pothole can end in a possible tragedy. If someone was being transported in an ambulance, and they need to be intubated and the ambulance hits a pothole, then the patient could easily end up dead. Hitting that pothole can make the emergency medical technician slip and end up messing up an important procedure that leads to a travesty, which they would not have slipped and messed up if the roads were smoother. Also, when transporting a patient in an emergency, an ambulance cannot swerve too much around the road because that might cause harm to the patient. Since they cannot maneuver around the road as much as it is possibly needed, they may not end up being able to dodge all the potholes. If they did not dodge those potholes then the ambulance may end up with a flat tire and not be able to bring the patient in trouble to the hospital which could result in the death of someone who could be saved. A New York news company, Rochester First, covered a situation similar to that hypothetical one. Rochester First covered a story where an ambulance hit a pothole and ended up with a flat tire, and then a different ambulance had to pick that dying patient up and drive finish driving them to the hospital (Rochester First). Luckily, in this situation the patient lived, but that might not be the case next time …show more content…
This project would cost the municipality about four and a half million dollars to complete fully (ARTBA). Although that is a lot of money, it is not an impossible amount to come up with for a project of this importance. In the Municipality of Monroeville’s budget plan for 2018 there are many spots were budgets of other departments can be slightly altered for a year in order for this change to occur (Budget). For example, they just created a department in 2018 that has a budget of almost half of the cost of this project, so if they pushed that department back one year then this project would already be half funded. There are many options to find the other half of the funding. For example, the municipality could make budget cuts to other departments also in order to come up with the extra money. Although this is not ideal for anyone because many people would lose their job or be laid off, it would solve the problem. After this year, all the budgets would go back up to their normal projections, and the people who lost their jobs would have a chance to get them back. A better option would be for Monroeville to add half a percent of sales tax to items that are usually are taxed for an eighteen month period of time. After that six month period of time, the sales tax
Car accidents pose as the second most noticeable inconvenience for commuters in Miami. In many occasions traffic accidents cause a hold-up of traffic. Take for example, the oil taker explosion on I-95 on November 6, 2006. A massive tanker truck, carrying loads of fuel, flipped over the highway over pass and onto NW 135 Street, a street that runs through one of the busiest commercial areas. The accident occurred on a Monday morning, while the rest of Miami was commuting to work.
...ay of laws and reasonable policy. Dr. Williams is obviously an individual of knowledge and pride, however, his education may not provide the key his views of positive policy. Instead of viewing the governments? attempt at safety as a negative authority, he should reflect on the physical benefits instead of the intangible conflicts. Therefore, the ?Click It or Ticket? article described one way of viewing a current law of governing safety. Dr. Williams clearly disagrees, but an audience should generally view the attempt at safety as the proper acts of government as opposed to the negative. Safety is a necessity for a civil society, and click it or ticket laws allow for a safer than nothing transportation situation. This should be appreciated and will eventually quiet all critics by accurate statistics of saved lives while maintaining a reasonable spending platform.
The EAC is $973,246, if we are only getting 93 on cents on the dollar worth of work we will be about $70,000 over budget by the projects
With the introduction of the automobile in the early 1900s, laws have been instituted to protect drivers on the road. With these laws come lawbreakers who put their agenda in front of the well being of others. Tens of thousands of lives have been lost. billions of dollars have been spent, and pollution has grown exponentially because of this. drivers travelling at high speeds on roads (Hartman).
In today’s day and age there are so many excuses for distracted driving. Lives are put at risk every time a distracted motorist is on the road, and deaths have increased by a substantial amount in the last ten years. On Thursday, April 26th, 2014 one woman’s bad judgement cost her life (Hastings, 1). Not only was she effected, but her friends and family assuredly felt a pain in their hearts. In the few seconds it took Courtney Ann Sanford to post a few words on Facebook, it was enough to distract her from the road and to drive across another lane and through a median straight into a Truck (Hastings, 1). She was immediately killed. Shortly before her Facebook post, she was sending selfies to her friends (Hastings, 3). This just goes to show
In the last 5 years, the number of people who have watched safe driving PSA’s has been increasing due to the shocking content of the videos, and consequently, the word about safe driving is now spreading more than ever. From teens who’ve just received their permit, to parents who are always behind the wheel, PSA’s have a good impact on all those who have not yet been alerted about the dangers of distracted driving. To quickly summarize PSA’s: Public Service Announcements or PSA’s for short are the new method organizations and charities use to spread the word about public safety. The most shocking PSA’s are those that display the effects of distracted driving (due to the gory/shocking scenes).
There are approximately 5,400 deaths per year that are linked to distracted driving, and thousands more were injured. (U.S. Department of Labor). Those fatalities are our neighbors, close friends, and even family. How can we prevent this from being so prominent? How can we make the roads a safe place to be again? These questions have many different answers, but many prove to be un-effective. I believe that the best and only way to resolve this issue is to implement tougher laws on cell-phone use in vehicles, and educate our youth to the best of our abilities on the dangers of distracted driving.
Even if just one person puts their phone down and concentrates on the road and not where the party is or who they got a snapchat from that is one less possible accident.
Every person who has gets behind the wheel of a motor vehicle will be involved in some sort of automobile collision at some point in his or her lifetime. Traffic accidents account for over twenty thousand deaths each year and more than ten times as many injuries. There are a number of factors that contribute to these types of collisions, however, new and evolving laws can account for a large portion of successful preventable measures. In order for laws to be changed or added for the purpose of safer roads and highways, lawmakers have to first look at what factors contribute to such unsafe conditions. The top five causes of automobile accidents that cause injury are distracted drivers, driver fatigue, drunk driving, speeding, and aggressive driving. Laws can be proposed to reduce and even eliminate each of these risks.
Every year, thousands of teenagers receive their driver’s licenses and millions are driving on America’s roads. Ensuring their safety and the safety of others is crucial. 16 to 18 year-olds have higher crash rates than drivers in any other age group. Between 5,000 and 6,000 youth will die on our roads this year and another 300,000 will be seriously injured. America has many more young people die in traffic incidents than it does in military service, and yet there has been little political or public activity done to make this problem known to the nation.
During the winter season, the water that accumulated beneath the roads became frozen. They, therefore, increased in mass, thus breaking the hard ground covering that were put on the roads during their initial construction. The cracks, therefore, led to the formation of the potholes.
Although it is a controversial topic, many individuals believe that the driving skills of senior citizens have declined and need to be addressed. According to The Telegraph, “more than a quarter (respondents) admitted to feeling unsafe when driven by someone over the age of 65” (The Telegraph). This topic dominates many family discussions, news stories, and headlines due to the risk that these driving skills have on others on the road. The Secretary of State Office in Michigan “receives 400 driver re-examination requests every month for drivers suspected to be unsafe, and the largest number, behind law enforcement, comes from family members” (USA Today). Although it is a hard discussion to introduce, families have a responsibility to address their concerns with their loved ones. Acknowledged as a popular and controversial topic, addressing the problem will ultimately prevent accidents and save
We can attack and reduce the dangers of aggressive driving. Each of us should take a look at our own driving habits and those of our friends and loved ones. The government can help with road improvements and law enforcement, but solving this problem will require people to change their behavior. Working together, we can make our roads safer and prevent deaths and injuries.
“The one thing that unites all human beings, regardless of age, gender, religion, economic status, or ethnic background, is that, deep down inside, we all believe that we are above-average drivers” -Dave Barry, comedian. The number of accidents over the last ten years have drastically increased, drivers are paying less attention to the road itself. Many individuals behind the wheel of a car believe that their driving does not affect the road conditions, however it always will. The driving habits of today are catastrophic due to the reasoning that the driving will affect other lives through reckless or distracted driving, and disobeying traffic laws.
I have discussed major safety topics including road and work safety and their effect in our daily living. We can’t evade from danger. The importance is that we learn to control and avoid factors that can cause us harm, injury or loss. This starts by making smart decisions. We should continue to teach our children to detect unsafe situations, places, things, and elements at an early age so that they practice safety habits throughout their life. In conclusion, is better to be safe than sorry.
