I was able to apply these concepts in real life when I also started working with children. I was a student aide at a child care center for infants and toddlers and volunteered and shadowed OTs at a karate clinic for children with disabilities. This further put my abilities to the test to interact with children since it was on an ongoing basis. Seeing children progress through each developmental stage of life felt meaningful on a greater level. It was a wonderful accomplishment when an infant would learn to crawl, a toddler would have a bowel movement successfully in the toilet, or when an adolescent would execute a strong and skillful kata (structured pattern of movements and techniques) during his or her karate belt test. On a bigger scale, the daily interactions I had with the children at a young age helped lay the foundation for their future development, and I was happy to have served as a teacher and role model. When you first enter the house and walk through the hallway, you will see that the kitchen is on the right side and the dining table on the left. From the perspective I have at this stage in my journey in the early childhood education field, I would like to share what I have come to value and believe in regards to early learning and care by looking at my philosophy statement. To begin we will look at the statement and highlight three key features and find out why they are important to me, then we will see what they will look like in my practice, and lastly we will examine these ideas closely by looking at where they originated. By taking an in-depth look at my philosophy statement we will better understand the motivation behind my practice which I hope to continue to refine and refresh as I gain more knowledge and experience.
Every teacher has this potential whether they are aware of it or not. I have been a teacher for nine years in early childhood education and within those nine years I have become very aware of how powerful the smallest act of caring can turn a person’s life around or even just make someone’s day a little better. Being a preschool teacher has brought me great pleasure to my life simply brightening a child’s day and knowing that I am making a difference in their life. Through my journey as a teacher I have thought about how I can advance in my career field and still be active with children on a daily basis and continue making a difference in each child’s life as well as their parents. As a teacher I believe that the most effective way to teach children is teaching through play and example by using pictures and gestures. Children are motivated to learn when they have opportunities to make choices in an environment that are inspiring and stimulating. Children are interested from infancy and have a desire to learn from their environment and those around them. When children are encouraged to interact with their peers and adults in positive ways, they feel safe to explore their surroundings. I as teacher have the opportunity to nurture and educate my students on all levels, making sure that my students are being taught developmentally appropriate
Teaching young children is quite time consuming, along with a very patient task. Not only are these young children learning about how the world works, but they are also learning about who they are as people, and learning to think about others as well. Majority of these children have spent their lives being catered to, to where everything is all about them. So it is only natural for them to be egocentric at this age. It will be my job as a teacher and a parent to teach these children how to think about other people in this world and go from a pre-conventional thought process to a conventional one. As a teacher to make sure that every child might be on a different level cognitively and socially. Children at this age will just be learning about moral reasoning, realizing the world does not revolve around them. I will constantly need to strive to make sure I am pushing children to their Zone of Proximal Development, and if they are not there I need to figure out how to get them there by scaffolding them. Each child will be a unique individual and it will be my goal as a teacher to help them reach their full potential, while making sure they are not being pushed too
Because of my early interest in children, I developed a strong desire to teach; consequently, I sought out jobs that allowed me varied experiences with children. My first experience was baby-sitting. Here I quickly learned that children must be told precisely what to do. For example, "Go wash your hands with soap and dry them right now." Or, "You must take your shoes off and then you may get into the bathtub." From the many baby-sitting jobs I had, I soon discovered that if I did not have a plan the day would be total chaos. As early as thirteen I became familiar with the need for structure and creativity when dealing with younger children and found myself loving every minute of it.
Ray Wilber once stated, "The potential possibilities of any child are the most intriguing and stimulating in all creation." This simple quote is incredibly motivating to any educator, especially myself. To me, children bring a certain smile to my face whenever they enter a room and so to be a teacher is to know the greatest happiness. Beyond love, education is the greatest gift you can offer a child and teaching allows you to bring that incalculable knowledge to their growing minds.
Teaching is a complex occupation that requires as much empathy and emotion as it does educational skill. I had always dreamed of becoming a teacher, and realized after having my own children, that I would not truly be fulfilling my purpose in life if I did not pursue this dream. As a volunteer at the elementary school in my community, I loved the environment and took tremendous joy in watching the children learn. I felt that I had the ability, along with the dedication and desire, it would take to become a full time educator. To achieve this goal I will strive to give my students a positive beginning, provide confidence in their individual abilities, and prepare them for different aspects in life.
I think that one of the greatest things that I can do for my kids is to take them seriously and listen to them. My five year old is constantly showing me everything that he learns and it’s very easy to tune him out sometimes, but I think its very important not to. It is important to listen because if you don’t give your kids enough attention they might try and seek it in a negative way. It is important to listen to your children when they have learned something new or want to tell you something that they are proud of. Children seek your approval, and that gives them confidence.
The purpose of early childhood education is to firstly learn about one’s self and agency, how one’s actions can affect and impact others; to develop a sense of identity; who you are and how you fit into this world. Experience a sense of belonging through interactions with peers and teachers whilst celebrating and sharing diverse cultures whilst embracing others. For most of my college career I worked as a nanny, assisting families in fostering a safe and fun learning environment for their children. Playing with them, reading stories, doing arts and crafts and running around at the park were among the many activities that I engaged in. Through nannying, I came to the realization that I wanted to pursue a career that allowed me to work with children and toward their well-being; this was what originally sparked my interest in child welfare. I have always had a way with children, they seem to be comfortable around me and I like taking the time to listen and talk to them so that they are able to express what is on their mind. I believe that by being an available positive role model to them in their elementary school years I can make a difference in their life. Children are very special and I believe that it takes someone that is more interested in helping the child than in their job or the paycheck, to help make a child to succeed. The time I have had in life to observe people it has become apparent to me that if a child is not succeeding in school, there is a very good chance that as an adult, they will not succeed either.
