I find occupational therapy to pique my drive to teach people valuable life skills as well as learn from those people and their experiences. Being an occupational therapist would allow me to have one-on-one interactions with patients and establish meaningful relationships over the course of time. It would also give me the dutiful privilege and responsibility of instilling confidence in others and helping them realize their full potential in self-suffiency. All of my personal experiences, challenges, educational backgrounds, and professional interactions have guided me toward pursuing my goals of gaining experience working in all populations, enabling patients to thrive in their daily lifestyle, and spread public awareness of what OT has …show more content…
I was able to apply these concepts in real life when I also started working with children. I was a student aide at a child care center for infants and toddlers and volunteered and shadowed OTs at a karate clinic for children with disabilities. This further put my abilities to the test to interact with children since it was on an ongoing basis. Seeing children progress through each developmental stage of life felt meaningful on a greater level. It was a wonderful accomplishment when an infant would learn to crawl, a toddler would have a bowel movement successfully in the toilet, or when an adolescent would execute a strong and skillful kata (structured pattern of movements and techniques) during his or her karate belt test. On a bigger scale, the daily interactions I had with the children at a young age helped lay the foundation for their future development, and I was happy to have served as a teacher and role model. These experiences and challenges validated that I enjoyed connecting with people and seeing them grow in emotional, physical, cognitive, and social development. Watching others accomplish their own developmental milestones made me feel like I had a

Townsend & Polatajko (2007) state that “Occupational therapy is the art and science of enabling engagement in everyday living, through occupation; of enabling people to perform the occupations that foster health and well-being; and of enabling a just and inclusive society so that all people may participate to their potential in the daily occupations of life”.
My work experience helped me confirm my interest when I got to see the roles of Occupational Therapists first hand. I was able to spend time shadowing an individual from a special needs school, which moved onto being able to run sessions with minimal help in gross and fine motor skills with the children who have a wide range of disabilities. It was a great experience to observe how everyday objects could be used to help build up these skills and how much the children enjoyed the activities. I was also able to shadow an OT within the Early Intervention in Psychosis team, this
Occupational therapy was a career choice I fell into. When I first arrived to Keiser University back in 2009 I was going to apply for the physical therapy assistant program. Physical and speech therapy where the only therapeutic disciplines I had any knowledge of at that time. When I met with the admissions counselor she informed me the waiting list for the PTA program was about two years, I was floored I wasn’t going to wait that long I needed to start school ASAP. The counselor then asked me “ what is your goal?” and my response was “to work with children in the medical field without being too medically involved”. She then handed me an occupational therapy pamphlet and I just signed the paper work to start that month. I honestly

My path to becoming a physical therapist starts with a bachelor's degree. This program will cover a lot of science topics, such as anatomy and pharmacology. After I complete a bachelor's degree program, I won't be qualified to work as a physical therapist until I complete the Doctorate degree program. In a Doctorate degree program, I will get to work in clinical situations, participate in internships and gain the necessary skills needed to become a licensed Physical Therapist. Licensing is done through the state that you wish to work in. If I wish to advance my career and go into teaching or research, I will need to complete a doctoral degree program. Regardless of whether I complete a doctoral program, I will be required to take continuing
As a result of my experience, it is my main goal in life is to help others the same way the team of therapists have helped me. I want to help people regain the pieces of their lives they feel they’ve lost. I am confident that with a quality education from this institution I will be able to achieve, excel, and provide quality therapy. Occupational therapy has provided a purpose for me. I believe that it is one of few ways you can help people regain their belief in themselves. I always believe the best in others, and I never give up on them. Occupational therapy is about helping individuals see the best in themselves, and putting that in action. By helping people come forward mentally and physically you help make them stronger and their whole life is altered . I want to change lives, and I know if I receive a quality education then that can become a reality. My earlier understanding of the OT profession wasn’t exactly clear. I hadn’t heard many people talk about it and I never knew anyone who was an OT until recently. When comparing physical therapy and occupational therapy, physical therapy seems to be the more popular profession. Members of my family have had physical therapy and I assumed occupational therapy was mostly the same or close to it. After shadowing two out-patient clinics and taking a class at U of M- Flint about different jobs, I quickly realized that OT was quite different. Obviously, I still don’t know everything OT and OTAs do, but I am eager to learn more about this profession.
Having a client-centered focus allows an occupational therapist to understand and address the goal of the patient. Each client has a different story, different struggle, and different background that brought him to where he is today. From a young age, I knew I wanted to work with people and for people of all ages; what better way benefit others than to help patients improve their day-to-day activities. Allen College’s program aligns with my goals to grow as a person, improve other’s lives and developing the set of skills necessary to motivate, build relationships and trust with my patients, and learn how to effectively advocate for my patients. Although for differing reasons, I stand by my eighth-grade decision to be an occupational therapist to passionately serve, motivate, and walk side-by side with each one of my patients on his or her
I believe individuals live the highest quality of life by being as independent and functional as possible. When one loses their physical ability to participate in the activities of everyday life due to an injury or illness, it can also have an adverse effect on their mental health and well-being. Occupational Therapy is essential for people to improve and regain the skills needed to live life to the fullest. I want to pursue Occupational Therapy as a career because it is a rewarding profession that works with individuals to improve independence and live a better life given their circumstances. My immense passion to help people and the skills I have gained throughout my educational, professional, and healthcare experiences will allow me
