It is a mutually agreed time period in which a company manager or a supervisor evaluates skills and abilities of the employee. Apart from the skills, there is also a close scrutiny on other attributes of the employee such as work ethic, discipline, reliability and social quotient. Probation was first introduced to the United States in 1841 when a boot-maker by the name of John Augustus attended court to bail out a drunkard. This offender was released to the custody of Mr. Augustus making him the first true probation officer, the offender was told to return to court in three weeks time for sentencing. During the time the offender was in the custody of Mr. Augustus he cleaned up his appearance and demeanor. Mr. Augustus had the belief that abusers of alcohol could be rehabilitated through the use of understanding, kindness, and sustained moral suasion not convictions and jail sentences. His beliefs were based on his affiliation with the Washington Total Abstinence Society, they abstained from alcohol. Augustus was a volunteer probation officer for 18 years. He began the practice of evaluating the prospective probationers paying close attention to whether the candidate would prove to be a successful candidate for probation. Things that were considered in a successful candidate were the character, age, and influences, those influences could be people, places or things.
Shock Probation Shock probation is a punishment which is imposed by the court for releasing the offender back into the community under the conditions of the suspended sentence. While on this supervision the probation officer is to refer the offender to community resources for things they need help with such as a job, some kind of treatment, maybe even drug test for supervise substance abuse, or even using an electronic monitor to know the offenders location. The probation officer is to report things that may go against what the offender is to do, such as failing a drug test would be reported to the court system, or violating parole would need to be reported to the Florida Board of Parole. In Florida we have different types of probation, the different types work with the offender as to what they have been charged for and how serious their conviction is. While an offender is on probation they are under the supervision of a probation officer. A probation officer’s general duties are to provide case management work to ensure that clients comply with court ordered requirements. A probation officer is to utilize the case management approach in the supervision of the offenders and instruct assigned offenders on compliance with court ordered conditions on probation. The officer is to refer the offender to appropriate community based organizations which include domestic violence, anger management, substance abuse, mental health, educational growth, life skills, and money management. The probation officer is to up keep all the information that has been given to the offender and document all contact with the offender.
I’ve often wondered what it would be like to be on academic probation. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences reviews all students at the end of both the fall and spring semester and summer term to determine their academic standing. As I was talking with the probation officers, I wanted to find out why did he pick the probationary field? As he stated, “He enjoys helping and trying to get his clients to better themselves, after committing a crime.” Just when you hit rock bottom, that does not always mean you can’t get back up again.
