A probation system is an opportunity offered to offenders with minor crimes or good behavior in where the offender is not send to jail instead he/she is put it in probation in where they have to report to a police officer and they have to follow the court orders and cannot break the law. Usually probation is an opportunity for offenders to reintegrated with the community. The North Carolina Probation system is based on supervising the offenders and help them succeed. Also making sure that the offenders don't go back to prison or jail. The organization of the probation system is very similar to a corrections goal which is overall rehabilitation. The offender must meet with the probation officers in the schedule dates. In case the offenders is not doing what she/he are suppose to do their probation could be revoked which means that most likely they would go back to jail. Probation officers are in charge of different offenders with different criminal offenses. Probation officers have a big caseload. Probation officers main goal is for offenders to rehabilitate and built better lives that doesn't involve criminal activity. A probation officer duty is to main contact with the offender and at least go see him once a month. The probation officer should visit the offender at his house, school, or work. The offenders also have to meet up with the probation officer at the Probation Center. Parole is a controversial issue because its vase ways to debate the challenges and problems that will exist. It’s like a side effect to medication based on one’s effectiveness belief. In like manner, the public media allows others who aren’t immediately effected to become tertiary, and secondary victims. It is the door to open opinions. The first issue to be tackled for an offender is a drug referral if needed since other interventions and programs will not have much effect if the offender will not retain them due to drug use. The Merriam Webster dictionary defines Probation as a period of time given to someone who commits a crime and instead of being incarcerated are allowed to spend their sentence in the community based on conditions set aside by the courts. After careful consideration and great thought this is the route I decided to take. I believe that parents play a great role in some of the decisions their children make. The decisions children make today are a reflection of their parents. My focus on this probation model is to place both child and parent in an institution were they would undergo a period of restoration of family values, rehabilitation, parenting courses, academia and counselling. The ages of these juveniles will range between the ages of ten (10) to seventeen (17) years old.Therefore I stand for institutionalized probation and how this probation will assist in instilling family values.
Being probation officers can be interesting and challenging because they are often required to work in high crime environment, so sometimes offenders would carry firearms on them to protect themselves. The probation officer gets to meet with all different walks in life and get to hear all different story. The most challenge is when you communicate with the offenders, some offenders tend to have angry issue, so you have to control your emotions and try to calm them down and befriend them, so that they respect you and listen to you. They are responsible for providing meaningful assistance to the court in its deliberations and decisions concerning criminal offenders. Probation and parole officers deal with managing and operational activities. The Department of Community Corrections has the responsibility of supervising offenders who are on parole or probation, rehabilitative and restorative program services, and residential services.
As I was talking with the probation officers, I wanted to find out why did he pick the probationary field? As he stated, “He enjoys helping and trying to get his clients to better themselves, after committing a crime.” Just when you hit rock bottom, that does not always mean you can’t get back up again. That’s where the probation field comes into play. They are the ones that try and give them the last chance to change before either going back to jail, or being let free back into reality. They need to make sure that they have completed every task that was asked of them, and that the probation officers, have offered and done all that they could for their client to not commit anymore crimes.

The “Tough on Crime” and “War on Drugs” policies of the 1970s – 1980s have caused an over populated prison system where incarceration is policy and assistance for prevention was placed on the back burner. As of 2005, a little fewer than 2,000 prisoners are being released every day. These individuals have not gone through treatment or been properly assisted in reentering society. This has caused individuals to reenter the prison system after only a year of being release and this problem will not go away, but will get worst if current thinking does not change. This change must be bigger than putting in place some under funded programs that do not provide support. As the current cost of incarceration is around $30,000 a year per inmate, change to the system/procedure must prevent recidivism and the current problem of over-crowed prisons.
Corrections in criminal justice is a punishment to rehabilitation or improve offender’s behaviors. The correctional system has programs that include parole and probation that are set for inmates that qualify to improve themselves and become better people. There are also other programs that provide care and support for inmates that are making a transition from custody to society. Evidenced based programing are out there to help inmates and make a change in corrections.
