I am writing this email to appeal me being put on academic probation. I believe that there was a factor of my education that the academic board has missed, and I wish to clarify what exactly it was.
When I was in elementary school, I fell behind in many of my classes. This inefficiency was further expanded when my family moved to New Jersey from Massachusetts, and my parents could see that I was having issues. So they took me to therapists and tutors to see what could be done, and they came to the conclusion that I had ADHD. My parents chose not to medicate me, and instead sent to me to various tutoring programs, some of which I stayed in until high school. My grades were average, so there were no complaints. When I first came to college, I did not have a solid idea of what the experience would be like, but I was excited for this new chapter in my life. I enrolled in courses I though I would excel in but a couple of weeks into the quarter, I felt unprepared for the fast-paced courses that I seemed to be struggling in but that my peers seem to of been excelling in. Early on this cause me some hardships suddenly I did not feel that I was as smart or accomplished as they were. As a result of this my grades in my courses suffered early on. As time progressed, I became friends with a group of people who were also in my similar situation, they were first-generation college students, students, this great support network of students allowed me to gain more confidence in my academic ability and with the help of my lab work, I began to see that I could excel in college.
I’ve often wondered what it would be like to be on academic probation. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences reviews all students at the end of both the fall and spring semester and summer term to determine their academic standing. Students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences must maintain a 2.0 cumulative KU GPA in order to be in good academic standing. Students below the cumulative KU GPA of 2.0 are placed on probation (KU.edu). Freshman and sophomores on Probation (between 0 – 59 completed hours)

I have had an obvious stumble in my beginnings with FAU but I am certain that with steps I've taken this summer I will be back on track to a good academic standing while completing my bachelor's degree. I was sometimes slower at completing a written paper or an assignment. In open discussions about material we had just read, things weren’t sticking with me after reading to feel confident to raise my hand and be active with discussions. I would have to search for answers in my memory for some time. Sometimes answers just weren’t retrieved at all. I became frustrated in school often, and eventually developed a negative attitude toward school. I struggled a lot with this because I knew I could do better. Every day I prepared myself for failure because I lacked the tools and strategies that I needed to succeed in school. Granted, I got by, but I could have been a much better student. I earned low B’s and C’s, but should have been A’s.

I always struggled with paying attention and succeeding on tests. As I got older it got worse. Throughout my 12 years of schooling, I had many episodes on giving up and just not caring. In high school, some of my friends around me started showing up less and less to school, and some even started dropping out. My mom would always take time out of her day to help me study and help with homework. She taught me a lot about staying committed in schooling that it all pays off in the end. My mom was going to online college in becoming a nurse. She influenced me into staying committed to my goals and that you needed to work for them. My mom would stay up late night with studying, doing homework, or working on essays. Seeing where she is now after all that hard work makes me want to do the same and not end up like my friend who did not
School began interesting for me my last year of high school. School was always important to me, but I never had a passion for it. However, I always put myself in a position to find a passion for school. I never skipped class, I never talked back, and I did my best to stay engaged in every class at all times. A desire to succeed in school did not happen until my final year of high school. I made it my mission to do well in school even if I had not found a passion for school. With my Dyslexia and my ADD, I have always struggled in school, and still struggle in school. I did not discover my Dyslexia and ADD until I was in the 10th grade. The doctor said I relied on my intelligence to create other ways to find the answer which masked my disabilities.
