a. Why is it important that we theorize about health promotion? (3)
i. Theorizing about health promotion is important because it can be to reflect on the past, creating effective interventions for the present, and providing a roadmap for the future (Goodson, 2010, chapter 2). The Tuskegee Study in the Goodson textbook is a good example of reflecting and theorizing about health promotion in the past. A possible theory for Tuskegee incident was that in the past, medical practitioners were trained to treat the disease that causes pain and illness to the body vessel. I don’t think that I was trained to be a theoretical thinker before this class. In my undergraduate university we briefly covered theories so that we have some exposure to it, but that is about it. I was expose to a lot of scientific theories since I was in middle school, but what I learn from that is not to question the science and just accept the fact as is. So I think that teacher should also be comfortable with teaching students about theories and ways to apply theories into real life so that students can make a connection that there is a use for theory. To this day, I still uncomfortable with theory because I didn’t not have a full understanding of what it really is or feel like I will have a use for it. I think that it is important to start teaching about theories and how to applied them at a younger age. By doing this, the student is aware of theories and have a lot of time to work with theories until they become comfortable about theories. Theories should not be covered once and forget about it until they take another theories class. It should be taught, give the student time to absorb the knowledge, and revisited to make sure that students understand. However, I don’t know if this is possible because of the time and amount of information that teachers are required to each to meet expectation of the …show more content…
One of the challenge Goodson (2010) mentions in chapter three was, “the barriers to the integrations of theory and practice” (p. 63). This challenge reflects to my answer to part c of this question, where I was taught about theory, I was not taught on how it can apply in practice. Wrenn and Wrenn (2009), wrote about integrating practice into theory learning and how it can be adapted to other curriculum. One of their recommendation is to apply a learning model where, “students are actively involved in a cyclical process that includes observing, applying, reflecting and sharing their experience” (p. 261). When I was taught about theory, I just try to absorb as much information as I can and I did not have a chance to talk about ways that theories can be use in different setting. I think this learning model can be integrated into a professional training to so that practitioner can have a refresher course about integrating theory into their practice. Another step could be integrating more theory based internship requirements into higher education. This model guides individuals and populations in their progression to adopt and maintain healthy lifestyle behaviours, such as regular exercise. There are two main strengths of this theory in terms of changing exercise behaviour. The Tuskegee Study, as exampled in the film “Miss Evers’ Boys,” was a horrendous example of the result of racism, a vulnerable population, and the manipulation of people not given the proper dignity they deserved, to benefit the majority class (Woodard). According to the film, in this study a whole community of African Americans went decades with identified cases of syphilis, being given placebo interventions and unjustifiably told that a later recognized intervention of penicillin shots were too risky for their use. Why would they do this? To gain knowledge; and they viewed the study as a “pure” scientific experiment, a human trial that would likely never be acceptable to have been conducted on Whites of the time, and under the full knowledge and aid of the U.S. government (Woodard, “Miss Evers’ Boys”).
The Tuskegee Study, which lasted 40 years, reveals the steadfast beliefs and little knowledge within the 20th century medical community about the African American people, the nature of sex, and how venereal diseases spread. The Tuskegee Study’s negative impacts reached beyond just the poor African American men who were used as the experiment’s subjects, but to their partners and children as well. Not only was the entire health of a community jeopardized by the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) by leaving a communicable disease untreated, but the heavy use of deceit towards the study’s unknowing test subjects illustrates how the race concept and Social Darwinism was so influential in public health during the time. The SMART goal of the obesity program is to reduce the obese population in Pitt County by creating a healthier diet program. Different objectives will be needed in order to reach this goal. The first objective is that from July 2016 through December 2016 100 community members will participate in the health department’s health promotion activities. This objective aligns with the reinforcement construct of the Social Cognitive Theory. By repeatedly participating in the activities, the 100 community members will be rewarded with the knowledge they receive and also motivation to change their behavior. By having an enjoyable time, they will be rewarded and want to keep coming back to the activities. The second objective is that following the 6-month duration; the majority of the participants will lose 2-10% of their original body weight by changing to a healthier diet. The reason the participants need to lose 2-10% of their body weight is to either prevent or reduce the chances of gaining other health diseases associated with obesity, including coronary artery disease and Type 2 Diabetes. This objective aligns with the self-efficacy construct. By losing a little bit of body fat, the participants will believe in their ability to lose weight, and continue to do so. The third objective is that on June 17 and June 24, informational brochures will be distributed to the community members to create awareness and reminders to join the obesity program, and gain knowledge about the health condition of obesity. This objective deals with the behavioral capability construct of the Social Cognitive Theory because the participants will gain the knowledge and skills needed to change their behavior through the brochures.
Lets make it quite clear that change doesn’t happen overnight nor is it ever a process easy.
