It contained 911 clearly defined objectives during its inception. Today, the goals have been increased to about 1,200, and are structured into 42 key topic areas (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [Healthy], 2015). A critical analysis of the initiative identifies the following four major goals that its founders intended to achieve. a) To facilitate the attainment of quality lives that are free of avoidable diseases, injuries, disability, and early deaths. b) To enhance the realization of health equity, get rid of disparities, …show more content…
and improve the state of health of all groups. c) To create social and physical environments that upholds the health of every individual. d) To promote high living standards, development in a healthy environment, and healthy manners across all life stages. Social Benefits of Healthy People 2020 Programs that are run by the Healthy People 2020 initiative focus on implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, a policy that requires every non-profit hospital facility in the US to undertake an assessment of community health needs. Upon conclusion of the evaluation, the organizations are required to develop and implement strategies that address health challenges and provide the identified community with crucial medical services. The requirement has greatly contributed to the improvement of the state of health of all groups of individuals in the US. Furthermore, Healthy People 2020 has expanded studies that clarify the health benefits of consumption of an appropriate diet.
Among the benefits of adherence to a healthy diet is maintaining a healthy body weight. The initiative emphasizes that people should change their behaviors in order to be healthy. It stipulates policies that need to be implemented to create an environment that supports healthy behaviors in various settings such as schools, places of work, medical institutions, and in the society (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [Healthy], 2015). The efforts have significantly reduced diet-related ailments. Research also shows that the campaign for a healthy nutrition has raised the level of awareness on household food …show more content…
security. Economic Gains that are brought by Healthy People 2020 The implementation of the Healthy People 2020 has greatly improved the health, development, safety, and the well-being of the wider American society.
The initiative takes cognizance of the fact that adolescence and young adulthood stages are crucial periods in lives of human beings because individuals are usually highly active (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [Healthy], 2015). Focusing on improving the health of people at the ages has significantly improved the rate of productivity, resulting into economic improvement. Similarly, studies have shown that Healthy People 2020 has greatly reduced financial burdens that result from preventable health problems. It has lowered the prevalence of the ailments; thus, limiting medication expenses that individuals and the state incur. Resources that would have been spent on medication are used to expand economic activities that enhance the well-being of the society. Furthermore, various health programs that are intended for the youth have prevented long-term costs of chronic diseases, which are mainly caused by risky adolescent behaviors (Healthy People [Adolescent],
2016). Another economic impact of the implementation of some Healthy People 2020 programs is success in medical research. The academic success and achievements are strong predictors of the overall health outcomes. Medical experts agree that knowledge on maintenance of a healthy community results into a decline in perilous behaviors and increased adoption of healthy behaviors (Healthy People [Health-related], 2016). It also promotes implementation of measures that enable the population to overcome challenges that contribute to health challenges. Cultural Gains that are brought by Healthy People 2020 The founders of Healthy People 2020 took cognizance of the fact that various ideas regarding healthy behaviors are formed from the information that people acquire on a daily basis. The health initiative guides the society to implement information sharing strategies in a manner that upholds key cultural values such as the use of languages that are to be understood by individuals from different backgrounds. The measure has enhanced local community participation in health management. It has also promoted comprehension of health-related interventions that are undertaken by the government to improve access to medical care. Furthermore, Healthy People 2020’s focus on cultural factors that affect the wellbeing of people has enabled the government and health institutions to shift from putting emphasis on treatment to addressing cultural factors that are the root causes of diseases. The change has promoted efforts that facilitate the achievement equity in the allocation of medical resources, leading to better health outcomes for all individuals (Healthy People [Health-related], 2016). Furthermore, the initiative promotes cross-cultural cooperation in addressing health issues, which bolters the government’s efforts of enhancing health equity across all regions. ...nce (Kaspen, Gorman & Miller, 2013) By encouraging healthy lifestyle choices, such as smoking cessation, healthy diet, weight management, blood pressure and cholesterol management people are healthier and at reduced risk for developing chronic conditions, ultimately decreasing the need for medical care and money spent on it (Kaspen, Gorman & Miller, 2013).
The Healthy People 2020 (Healthy People 2020, 2014) is a nationwide program created by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to achieve objectives for promoting health and preventing diseases. Faith based communities may benefit tremendously in including these objectives in program planning. The main goal is for the American people to have long, healthy lives. The Healthy People 2020 program provides measurable objectives that can be applied down to the local level such as in faith based communities. These guidelines encourage high quality of life by being healthy, disease-free, accessible healthcare, and have an environment that promotes good health and wellbeing in all age levels.
The health of the American people lags behind those from other developed countries. Federal public health agencies have a wide range of responsibilities and functions which includes public health research, funding, and oversight of direct healthcare providers. It has been a long time since changes have been made to the way the federal government structures its health care roles and programs outside of Medicare and Medicaid (Trust, 2013). With healthcare reform on the horizon now is the time to invest time and money in prevention, not medicine, making it a top priority to improve health and prevent disease. Funding efforts at all levels of the public health continuum need to focus on developing programs aimed at such leading initiatives as tobacco cessation, improving nutrition, supplying safe workplaces, and increasing physical activity in all ages of the population. People should have equal access to quality preventative medicine and education.
Healthy people 2020 can be defined as that arm of the government launched by the Department of Health and Human Services in December 2010 with 4 goals which include attaining high-quality, longer lives free of preventable disease, disability, injury, and premature death; achieving health equity, eliminating disparities, and improving the health of all groups of people; creating social and physical environments that promote good health for all people; and promoting the quality of life, healthy development, and healthy behaviors across all stages of life (CDC, 2015).
“Healthy People provides science-based, 10-year national objectives for improving the health of all Americans.” ( United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Healthy People 2020 , 2011). It acts as a national guide for disease prevention and health promotion. There are various objectives and goals which serve as the guideline to achieve overall improvement in health . ‘Educational and Community-Based Programs’ is one of them. According to U.S Department of Health and Human Services the main goal of these programs is to “Increase the quality, availability, and effectiveness of educational and community-based programs designed to prevent disease and injury, improve health, and enhance quality of life.” (HHS, Healthy People 2020, 2011). This particular goal of Healthy People 2020 focuses on increasing the number educational and community based programs to increase awareness about disease prevention and health among every individual of the society. It focuses on educating them on various topics including chronic diseases, substance abuse, prevention of injury and violence to encourage and enhance health. It emphasizes on increasing the quantity and quality of such programs so that a larger population could benefit from the program and gain effective knowledge to achieve a healthy life.

Healthy People 2020 focuses on many initiatives, however, the ones that interest me the most are making access to health services easier, achieving equal health by eliminating health disparities, and overall improving health-related quality of life. A main concern of Healthy People’s is disparities, and it is their goal to “achieve health equity, eliminate disparities, and improve the health of all groups” (Healthy People 2020). A disparity is when a health outcome is seen to a greater or lesser extent between populations. Healthy disparities are usually closely linked to disadvantages such as social, economic, and environmental. In order to eventually achieve a health equity, we must value everyone equally and address inequalities, injustices, and eliminate disparities within the healthcare system.
...These services can be a key to improve health of many citizens and keep rising health costs under control. Preventive screenings and counseling on topics such as losing weight, treating depression and alcohol consumption can make it possible to detect many diseases in the early stages, when it is treatable, and reduce health care costs in a long run (America’s Health Insurance Plans, 2007).
Health literacy plays an important role in individuals’ decision-making. The scope of health literacy does not limit to traditional medical perspective. In fact, it has extended from the basic understanding of diseases and medications to all aspects that affect health. As one of the key social determinants, health literacy has huge impact on health and well-being. Its influence is associated with disease prevention, healthy lifestyle promotion, policy making, etc. This essay will first discuss the concept of health literacy and the consequences that link to it, and then give a strategy—designing user-centred messages in education, to improve health literacy,

When thinking of my overall health, a few aspects stand out that I think I could definitely improve on. When I think my current personal wellness I think it is fairly decent. There are definitely people out there far worse than myself. It could be better because there is always room for improvement. I’m a big fan of personal growth. To me if a person decides to stop growing or wanting to better themselves either mentally, physically or emotiontally. Then whats the real purpose for living? I am a fairly active person. I love to hike, stay fit and eat healthy. Living a healthy lifestyle isn’t hard for me which I think definitely contributes to a wellness.

...rtant consideration, as well. Providing equal access to high quality health care is perhaps the biggest investment we can make in our country because it would dramatically increase the number of healthy Americans. Children that are in good physical and mental health are more likely to develop positive personality traits, such as altruism, ambition, optimism, and compassion. When more people possess these positive traits, our entire society benefits. As stated by Abraham Maslow in his work Toward a Psychology of Being (1962, p. 5), “…sick individuals make their culture more sick [and] healthy individuals make their culture more healthy. Improving individual health is one approach to making a better world.” Ensuring that children and adolescents, specifically, all have access to age-appropriate, high quality health care is truly an investment in our nation’s future.

Now, try asking yourself, have you been on healthy diets? Have you gotten sufficient rest each day? Or even, have you been performing healthy lifestyle by doing sports regularly?
Personal health is extremely important to everyone around the world. But it is especially important to citizens of the United States of America. Being one of the leading countries in Health technology and also in food and beverage leaves most people choosing between living a healthy lifestyle and indulging in the varieties of food we offer. Across the country, many people are living with pre-existing conditions, living in food deserts, living below the poverty line and a long list of other factors that either hinders them from eating healthy or force them to eat healthily. When trying to live a healthy lifestyle in this country not only does the promotion of prevention matter, but also the promotion of Career and job opportunities matter just as much. In the United States, Money equals Power and money also equal the opportunity to create and live a healthier lifestyle.
