Throughout the semester, the author has seen information about Healthy People 2020 over and over again. She cannot read a single chapter of Public Health Nursing: Population-Centered Health Care in the Community without seeing objectives from Healthy People 2020 that relates directly to that chapter’s subjects. Due to the heavy emphasis on this the author wanted to know more about what Healthy People 2020 was trying to accomplish and what are the specifics that this is trying to focus on. The other thing she wanted to do was go over three of the topics of Healthy People 2020 and come up with each type of prevention for each. The first thing the author wants to talk about is the purpose and significance of Healthy People 2020. The purpose …show more content…
or vision of Healthy People 2020 is “a society in which all people live long, healthy lives” (ODPHP, 2017). Healthy People 2020 also have mission criteria and overarching goals. The author felt that the overarching goals would be more informative than the mission criteria. The first overarching goal is having high quality, longer lives free of preventable disease, disability, injury, and premature death. The next two are to achieve health equity, eliminate disparities, and improve the health of all groups, and create social and physical environments that promote good health for all. The last one is to promote quality of life, healthy development, and healthy behaviors across all life stages. (ODPHP, 2017) To start, the author wants to define primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention in order to better discuss the three focus areas the author choose from Healthy People 2020. According to Lancaster and Stanhope (2016), primary prevention is interventions that prevent the occurrence of disease, injury, and disability. Some examples of this type of prevention are health education and promotion programs. Then secondary prevention is interventions created “to increase the probability that a person with a disease will have that condition diagnosed at a stage when treatment is likely to result in cure” (Lancaster and Stanhope, 2016). The biggest type of secondary prevention interventions is screening tests. Finally, tertiary prevention deals with disability limitation and rehabilitation from disease, injury, or disability. Examples of this include medical treatment, physical and occupational therapy, and rehabilitation. Now the author will discuss the three focus areas she choose and what each prevention of the three preventions will be for each.
The first one, the author chooses was the topic: mental health and mental disorders. The primary prevention would be an education class on what mental disorders there are and the warning signs that one may have them. This would ensure that the population would receive treatment earlier. Then for a secondary intervention would be a screening for depression in children and adolescents that could be held at multiple schools in order to find those already exhibiting signs sooner. Finally for tertiary preventions, the author would include therapy specifically cognitive behavioral therapy and medications that would help depending on what the patient had such as psychotropic medications for schizophrenia. This would help them be able to live their lives to the best of their ability. The next topic the author choose was lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender health. The biggest primary prevention that the author saw that Healthy People 2020 mentioned was implementing antibullying policies in schools. A secondary prevention would be letting reminding the community that health staffs are to be trusted because they are there for the communities benefit. Tertiary prevention could be treating them after a violent assault that may also need counseling in order to move past what happened to them. The last topic the author decided on was sleep health. The primary prevention for this would be a promotion program for college students the benefits of getting a good night sleep, while also providing information on the problems that could stem from not doing so. The secondary intervention for this would be screening for sleep disorder and sleep deprivation for college students. Finally, the tertiary prevention would be providing medication to insomniacs in order for them to sleep
better. Overall, Healthy People 2020 is trying to accomplish a great deal. This will require the United States as a whole to make all the changes that this would like to accomplish.
Self- care abilities of individuals and communities are important to promote mental and physical health and to reduce mortality and morbidity that occur from accidental injuries and chronic conditions (Dillion, 1997). Lifestyle changes have an effect on health prevention and delay of diseases and health problems. Dillion states if nurses use strategies from community nursing and objects from Healthy People 2000 they can identify threats to health promote and maintain health. Dillion states a key strategy is a health fair (Dillion,
The six priority areas are listed as; healthier eating and active living, tobacco free living, reducing harmful alcohol and drug use, improving mental health, preventing violence and injury, and improving sexual and reproductive health. The backbone of the plan is to influence healthy living choices, developing from childhood, throughout life approaching old ages, leading to lessened risks of burden of disease (Department of Health,
The Healthy People 2020 (Healthy People 2020, 2014) is a nationwide program created by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to achieve objectives for promoting health and preventing diseases. Faith based communities may benefit tremendously in including these objectives in program planning. The main goal is for the American people to have long, healthy lives. The Healthy People 2020 program provides measurable objectives that can be applied down to the local level such as in faith based communities. These guidelines encourage high quality of life by being healthy, disease-free, accessible healthcare, and have an environment that promotes good health and wellbeing in all age levels.
Healthy people 2020 can be defined as that arm of the government launched by the Department of Health and Human Services in December 2010 with 4 goals which include attaining high-quality, longer lives free of preventable disease, disability, injury, and premature death; achieving health equity, eliminating disparities, and improving the health of all groups of people; creating social and physical environments that promote good health for all people; and promoting the quality of life, healthy development, and healthy behaviors across all stages of life (CDC, 2015).
“Healthy People provides science-based, 10-year national objectives for improving the health of all Americans.” ( United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Healthy People 2020 , 2011). It acts as a national guide for disease prevention and health promotion. There are various objectives and goals which serve as the guideline to achieve overall improvement in health . ‘Educational and Community-Based Programs’ is one of them. According to U.S Department of Health and Human Services the main goal of these programs is to “Increase the quality, availability, and effectiveness of educational and community-based programs designed to prevent disease and injury, improve health, and enhance quality of life.” (HHS, Healthy People 2020, 2011). This particular goal of Healthy People 2020 focuses on increasing the number educational and community based programs to increase awareness about disease prevention and health among every individual of the society. It focuses on educating them on various topics including chronic diseases, substance abuse, prevention of injury and violence to encourage and enhance health. It emphasizes on increasing the quantity and quality of such programs so that a larger population could benefit from the program and gain effective knowledge to achieve a healthy life.
Healthy People 2020 is a program for the promotion of health and the prevention of diseases, launched by the Department of Health and Human Services in December 2010. According to healthypeople.gov, this program has four overarching goals which are first to achieve healthy, longer lives free of preventable diseases, injuries, and premature deaths; to achieve health fairness, eliminate differences, and improve all groups’ health; also to produce social and physical environments that encourage good health; and last but not least to promote life’s quality, healthy development, and healthy behaviors through all life stages. This program has a vision of a community where people live long, healthy lives. Healthy People 2020 offers a comprehensive set of 10 years of nationwide goals and objectives that is meant to improve the health of the American population. Healthy People 2020 covers 42 topic areas with approximately 600 objectives, which include 1,200 measures. A smaller set of Healthy People 2020 objectives, has been designated to communicate high-priority health issues and actions that can be taken to address them, this objectives are called Leading Health Indicators. The program goes above and beyond these health indicators in order to provide the best care for the people of this country. These indictors cover from the access of health service, nutrition, physical activity, and obesity to substance abuse, environmental quality, injury and violence.
Health is the most important things in our life. People will use difference method to maintain their physical and psychological health. Ewles and Simnett (2010) described health is a difficult concert to explain, it is changing over time and affect by difference culture and professional determine. Also, changing their perceptions about their health and to overcome the issues that restrict them from having a healthy lifestyle. (Lapkin & Doab 2015) Moreover, nurses can prevent illness in the community to worsen and assist them to manage their health. Nurses will have a better understanding of the factors that may influence the patient’s behaviour which can be used to assess them to provide them with better treatment. Further, fulfilling the patient’s needs, preventing further damage to their health while promoting a healthy environment. (Stein-Parbury 2014) Nurses may also promote health equity effectively, in addressing the social determinants of health in public health policies and research to increase health of the community and educate others in taking responsibility of their health, to reduce illness and disease in the community. To reach a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing, an individual or group must be able to identify and to realize aspirations, to satisfy needs, and to change or cope with the environment. Health is, therefore, seen as a resource for everyday life, not the objective of living. Health is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities. Therefore, health promotion is not just the responsibility of the health sector, but goes beyond healthy life-styles to wellbeing. Health promotion goes beyond health care. It puts health on the agenda of policy makers in all sectors and at all levels. It directs policy makers to be aware of the health consequences of their decisions and accept their responsibilities for
Healthy people 2020 is an initiative that has been taken to make the world healthier. Healthy people 2020 has set numerous objectives some that has objectives have data and some that doesn’t. In order for Healthy People 2020 to be successful, it is dependent in part on the ability of health agencies at all levels of the government and on non-governmental organizations to assess objective progress. The health topics that are of focus are general health status, health-related quality and well-being, determinants of health, and disparities.
Positive health is not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, but the capacity to withstand challenges and to accomplish life’s activities with pleasure and energy).”
The purpose of this paper is to exam a Healthy People 2020 health topic. This paper will discuss HIV; human immunodeficiency virus. This paper will assess, interpret, justify, evaluate and appraise HIV disease, its history, health statistics, preventive measures, the role of the nurse and finally an appraisal of the health programs and availability of supportive care.
Determining what a person “should do” to promote health does not take the person, their priorities, values, concerns, or desires into account. In many instances, such broad goals also neglect to take into account cultural and generational differences. Food choices for many stem from cultural preferences. Broad spectrum goals that do not take these differences or preferences into account surely will not succeed, may run the risk of alienating people, and ultimately could result in blame for their health being placed on them. He also addresses the fact that goals that are prescribed have little meaning or value, and goals a person identifies are preferred. This is very much in line with a patient centered approach as described by Miller and Rollnick (2013), Inzucchi and colleagues (2012), and Anderson and Funnell (2010). Tengland’s points on these matters are well
