The use of social network or social media for recruitment purposes provide a substantial prospects for employers to search and recruit potential candidates. Since social media and online resources are the most available and effective tools in the 21st century, they are more convenient and appropriate to use for recruitment purposes nowadays. But as there are number of advantages there are also couple of significant challenges for employers if they want to have screening or background checks or check employee job references.
While using social network to search and select the right candidates, employers are facing certain restraints, occasionally, while online screening is based on data found through social network content the wrong decision can take place. Because of potential discrimination hiring charges, the practice of social network screening and background checks by recruiters is going down. This can lead to legal charges from employees as there no clear law regulations at this point. Therefore there are should be evident policies and practice to be developed on how much of social network information the organizations and employers can use while going through hiring process. The limitations and solutions for this matter are long ago recognised and predicted and therefore this setback is not a restrain for companies and employers to stop proceeding with such wide and valuable tool like social networking.

The three big social media platforms, which are most popular and therefore effective and usually need no investment, are Facebook, social network service, which was founded on February 4, 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg with his college roommates and fellow Harvard University students. LinkedIn, which is a business-oriented social networking service. It was launched on May 5, 2003, and it is mainly used for professional networking. And micro blogging service, called Twitter "that enables users to send and read short 140-character text messages, called "tweets".
These major social platforms are very successful among large range of generations as well as they have become an integral part of so many people's lives. Therefore they are more convenient and handy to use, also because of the use of advanced mobile applications and high-speed Internet access, wherever working in an office or participating in a marathon.

In this paper I will explore how social media offers new options that recruiters now have compared to what they had in years past. There will also be a discussion about how recruiters use social media and what needs to be done to avoid legal pitfalls, specifically avoiding discrimination of certain protected classes.

Social networks are increasing dramatically every year. Employers are turning to social networks because it is a tool to screen job applicant’s profiles. According to a survey conducted by jobvite.com (2013), 94 % of employers use social media profiles to recruit job applicants. This trend assists the applicants and recruiters. Job applicants should be judged by their social network profiles because social media give positive image about the candidate, prove the information in the resume, and help to identify if the person fits the culture of the company or not.
In a survey done by Joyce LeMay and Jonathan Segal, they found out, “31 percent of the 212 respondents (about half were in HR) said they believed that using social media for screening applicants is unethical.” The secured use of social media done by the employer could decide if the candidate gets the job or not. Economically speaking the decision of the job candidate not getting the job based on what they say on their social media accounts, could make them lose out on money or salary for that job. This is one economic conclusion that can come from this example. The other is when the employers’ use social media as a way to decide if they want to hire someone or not, they could be picking the best candidate possible, which could lead to maximizing business benefits. Which could help the company economically in the long
Colleges, employers, and schools frequently ponder ther question, should social media be investigated in order to admit a student or check up on an employee. There are many possible ways that this investigation could be seen as negative, but also many ways this could be seen positively. For example, an employee might be posting bad things about their job or boss on Facebook, which could negatively impact the employee but it would be beneficial for the business to know about. This question has many answers for this process, and also against this process.
The way future candidates view social media has evolved drastically over the past ten years as technology has evolved. From websites like LinkedIn to Twitter, each website provides a unique opportunity for employers to view a future candidate. According to Media Bistro/Infographic, “92%of companies” use social media as an initial step to recruit future candidates. Another statistic Media Bistro/Infographic provides is that 73% of employees hire using social media and 20% of employers say it takes less time to hire via social media. What do these small statistics mean? Majority of the time if recruiters use social media, it is like an extra step to background checks and screenings before the interviews. Social Media allows for employers to have additional information of their prospective candidate before hiring. These statistics show that employers look at a person’s profile based on the information that is public or accessible; yet the employer uses that decision to hire the future candidate. Based on what a person post, there are heavy consequenc...

Social networking applications such as Facebook and Skype assist people and corporations to communicate with each other for social and as a hiring tool. Many young people in the current era are doing their best to build their online networking career healthy and available to all the recruiters (Nigel Wright Recruitment, 2011). Moreover, Social Networking websites for recruiters is a great mechanism to scan applicants in a very short-time, however, it is not stress-free as it appears to be. Should employers be using social media to make a decision about a future employer? Employers using social media to make decisions about future employers is something that shouldn't be done. It shouldn't be done because an online profile is not meant to be an online resume on social media. Another reason why it shouldn't be done because everything that people post and see on social media isn't always true. It is also a bad idea for employers to use social media to make decisions about future employees because what a future employee may post they can possibility post something and another person will take it the wrong way and it could be effective to the person.
