In today’s society, billions of people across the world are accessing the Internet multiple times a day. Many people have the Internet on their smart phones, and with the touch of a button can check their email, Facebook, Twitter, their bank account balance, movie times, GPS, Instagram, or anything else online. Most of these things take up large amounts of time from people’s lives. Whether it is a child at school or an adult at work, they are all a member of some sort of social network and check it often.
There is no doubt that there are certain social benefits to these sites; most say that they help people keep in touch, or that they make life easier. However, the benefits do not outweigh the problems they cause. Social networking causes children and adults to be lazy, overweight, less productive at either school or work, illiterate, and anti-social.
The first reason that social networking is bad for society is that people have become overweight. About two decades ago, when people were bored, they would go outside and do something. They would ride a bike, go for a walk with their dog, play a sport with friends, or go to the gym. Nowadays, many people just go on their phones or computer and tweet. Most people would rather tweet about how bored they are instead of actually getting up and doing something. although social networking will give people something to do, in all reality they aren’t doing anything.
Most of the time when people are on their phones, they wont do anything else and just devote their attention to their phones than to the task at hand. This causes people to be less productive. A person may apply for a job, but when that company reviews the applicant’s Facebook page, they may find that that particular person likes to party every night and fight with people online. This may cause the employer to loose interest in the applicant and possibly choose another person for the position. With social networking site readily accessible by anyone online, the wrong information may get out and it may impact a person’s life in a way they never expected.
As a conclusion social networking does a good amount of harm to society. It causes people to become obese, lazy, unproductive, antisocial, and it helps them loose their ability to speak proper. Though it may be useful and at times, but it the long run it is not worth it. Social networking can interfere with a person’s social life if they get hooked at a young age.
