There has been controversy as to whether parents should limit the use of social media by teenagers. Teenagers feel that there is no need to limit the use of their social media networking, but on the other hand parents should feel the need to limit their use and also keep track of their teen’s social networking. Social media has allowed to be connected with their peers, teens who post positive status are more likely to be involved in extracurricular activities, and to many teens putting up “selfies” is a self confidence boost; however, too much social media can affect students GPA in school, cyber bulling can affect social health. Social media networks can give out personal information.
Social media sites such as Facebook are one of the most popular social media sites that has 700,000-750,000 members joining each day. Connecting with peers shouldn’t be a problem. It’s as easy typing the peers name push search, and some suggestions come up and find your peer you’re looking for and shoot them a message instantly with social media manly targeting young people such as teenagers. Facebook has made it so easy for teens to interact and engage with their peers. It allows teens to come into contact with long, lost relatives and reunite with them. Facebook is a virtual site = which gives teens an endless possibility to engage with peers, family, of maybe even people who they have never meet allowing then to interact making new friends.

Social media is most popular amongst adolescents. According to a poll conducted by Infographic, nine out of ten teenagers have used social media. Whenever a new technological advancement occurs there is concern over how it will affect society. In the case of social media, the concern is greatest for adolescents. So, how does social media effect adolescents? Social media can have both negative and positive effects. Some of the effects of using social media can be depression, addiction, cyberbullying and exposure to inappropriate content.
Lastly, students who use social networking applications very little or do not use them at all can be positively affected because they have a lot more time to complete homework, study, sleep, and practice good eating habits. These same students can be negatively affected because they usually don’t receive information pertaining to global issues and pop culture without the direct access to social media.

The first reason why I see social media ruining the lives of teenagers is because students have been getting cyberbullied on a daily basis. When I was 11 years old, a group of girls created a group chat with me in it and started pointing out my every flaw. I was already going through one of the hardest times with my family, but none of those girls knew. Teenagers are clueless so other students lives. No one knows what each other is going through at home. Not to mention, they think that since it is on social media, they won’t get caught or in trouble. If social media/ texting was controlled more, this wouldn’t be such a huge issue.
