THE UNITED STATES is a force globally recognized for its achievements and commitments, the commitments we hold for our country and the entire world. Many countries request our help because of our professionalism and willingness to assist. We are continually present when our services and expertise are required. The world acknowledges our dedication to various missions and support tasks regarding armed conflict, humanitarian aid or training their troops. The whole is a sum of its parts; each soldier contributes to the honor and reputation of this country and The US Army. There is a concrete path to becoming a great professional leader and earning this distinction. Soldiers of this force must act, think and remain professional …show more content…
Professional leaders internalize pride and ownership for the Army. They adapt to different cultures, places, missions and circumstances. Professional leaders foster an open mind to accomplish the assigned duties; simultaneously they relate to others and gain human and professional respect of other soldiers and societies that trust us. These characteristics define a professional Army leader. As leaders, we know many people rely on and learn from our knowledge, attitude and action. Therefore, it is essential to maintain the integrity of the team and avoid generating or participating in conflict. However, if an error occurs, we must accept responsibility as well as face, admit and accept the consequences of error caused. Professional leaders also realize and understand the welfare of our soldiers and their families. This is a part of a mutual compromise between soldiers and supervisor; we provide quality and flexibility in exchange for good job performance. It is very important to work as a team with a fair share mentality for best results so we can guarantee a professional and competitive team that ensures the success of the
The role of a leader is often inaccurately defined as an individual who is in a position to give orders. However, there are enormous differences in the attributes of an outstanding leader, and one of mediocrity. An outstanding leader, above all else, is a role model for their peers. In doing so, a leader of the highest caliber is trustworthy in both their peer’s trust for the leader as well as the leader’s trust of their peers. A leader must also display exceptional skill in communication which transcends speaking and, more importantly, includes listening and consideration to the ideas presented to them. Furthermore, a leader must be supportive of and willing to help their peers build their own strengths. The attributes listed above represent only a small subset of what makes an outstanding leader. Yet,
I think others are also important. High performing team might not have all the needed qualities for the organization to move forward, they have just figured out how to work together and use their strength together to meet and exceed goals.
This paper will not bore with the definition of a profession. The United States Army is about more than words, it is about action. The action of over 238 years of tradition and service. The Army is a profession. A profession requires its members to adhere to prolonged training and learn specialized skills. A member of a profession must wholly commit himself and his skills to a calling which is entrusted by the public. A profession provides its members with intrinsic value which motivates beyond financial gain. The Army is a higher calling which demands all of these qualities and more.
The way a leader is defined and remembered is not only through his actions and accolades, his followers and the leaders he developed also go into a leader’s legacy. Much like a legendary football coach, whose coaching tree goes on to do great things, I desire to join an organization that not only assist in my development as a leader, but also facilitate in the development of others as well. How could I contribute to the development of leaders? My largest contribution will come from my experience of being the United States military, where I was not only trained how to become an efficient leader, I was also taught on how to facilitate the growth and development of others leaders as well. I am able to accurately assess and evaluate strengths and weaknesses of an individual and assist in the development of a plan of action to address these areas. One of my personal beliefs is that vast knowledge is useless unless it is passed down to someone. With that being said I take every opportunity possible to share any knowledge that has helped me along the way.
In this book, the authors Tom Rath and Barry Conchie examine the question “What are the keys to being an effective leader?” To answer this question they had a team that reviewed data collected from Gallup polls. The data came from interviews from 20,000 senior leaders, over a million teams and more than fifty years of Gallup Polls of the most admired leaders in the world. The authors then had the team do a study of more than 10,000 followers to find out why they follow the influential leaders in their life.
The best leaders in life are the ones that leave lasting impressions on their pupils. Bill Rago did this
According to Dyer & Dyer (2013) research, to improve the team performance it is important to consider the four “C”s. It is essential that team and its member understand the meaning of the four C’s in order to have a high performing team. The four “C”s are (1) The context of the team, (2) The composition of the team, (3) The competencies of the team, and (4) The change management skills for the team.
And more than talking, listening to voices and silences is important; in particular we should pay attention to those who dissent from our point of view. I understand that these issues can be complicated, especially in vertical organizations. But honesty and frankness are necessary and important when it comes to talking about team performance. So to speak it all, speak it well, with frankness, respect and honesty and trying to create the link from the first day, where people do not punish sincerity. On the contrary, trust is created so that problems are solved and not hidden under the
Leaders can have a powerful impact on the futures of many, and the way in which one approaches leadership is paramount to the type of impact one will have. Continual growth in the areas of knowledge I have and seek to acquire, as well as recognizing my leadership style and utilizing my personal strengths to the fullest, is vital to the successful implementation of my personal philosophy of leadership.
Success through team work is also an important principle discussed. In order to be an effect team you must have trust, communication, loyalty, selfless service, respect, and discipline. Successful teams put the good of the team first and work together to accomplish their goals. They thrive on challenges and learn from previous experience in order to improve in the future. These teams show pride in what they do and their accomplishments.
The components of a good team should be considered. First, a high-performance team must have strong core values to guide attitudes and behavior consistent with the team's purpose. The members should know why the team is created and why he or she is on the team. Secondly, a team should have specific performance objectives. Members should know exactly what they are trying to accomplish. This also includes having standards for measuring results and ways of obtaining performance feedback. A good team will make members realize the importance of collective efforts. Third, a high-performance team has the right mix of skills. These involve technical, interpersonal, decision-making, and problem-solving skills. No one needs to know how to do it all, but each member should be able to contribute to the group....
Even though our world is constantly changing as shown in the video, “Did You Know?”, the way our leaders lead has been fairly constant. The traits and qualities past leaders such as Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King had are the same traits the leaders we look up to today have. Good leaders are aware of our continuously shifting world and have learned to adapt to what works best for those around them. The book, Learning as a Way of Being, discusses how as leaders we must be prepared for the changes that are constantly occurring in our society. We need to always be open to learning new things and how to best adapt to the environment around us. The more experiences we deal with in the past, the more prepared we will be for the changes in the future.
So this theory helps me to understand better that to succeed as a leader we need to start focusing better on team work and communication and gaining strong trust to achieve all our goals together.
Leaders of the future will be faced with many challenges. As the world changes, we must adapt the ways in which we face these challenges, and in turn grow as leaders. A leader is not merely someone which commands a group or organization. A good leader exhibits the ability to take an average team of individuals and achieve greatness. Leadership is not supervision or leading. It is the ability to inspire or influence others towards the end goal. As Barendsen and Gardner stated (2006), “the best leaders are individuals who, in their work, exhibit three distinct meanings of good: (1) an excellent technical and professional quality and competence, (2) an ethical orientation, and (3) a completely engaged sense of fulfillment and meaningfulness” (p. 266). Good leaders must utilize all of these traits in order to meet the challenges of the future. A few emerging challenges that future
