The power of our mind comes not from its ability to observe, but its ability to apply these observations to create assumptions about the world around us. In doing so our mind goes beyond the information given, our sensory information, and uses these assumptions to respond in an appropriate manner. For our purposes an assumption is any belief or prediction we have about an object or situation that could not be ascertained solely from the information given to us by our senses and is based on prior experiences with the purpose of giving us reliable information to use. Our mind makes assumptions because without doing so it would need to treat every event as a new problem to be solved, when one’s mind finally did come to the solution, it would likely be one it had come to innumerable times before. As such, assumptions tend to be helpful shortcuts that allow us to use less processing power.
No matter what someone is doing they are relying on assumptions, allowing them to react faster and more consistently. All of the assumptions our mind makes stem from the overarching assumption that the world around us is fairly predictable and reactions to similar situations will elicit similar results. There are basic assumptions such as, objects have consistent mass, small objects have less mass than large ones, and objects fall down, which allow us to move around and manipulate objects in a predictable manner. An example of an automatic assumption that our brain makes is location tagging where we bind features based on their physical location, meaning if the features orange and round are in the same location, then then they are assumed to be on the same object which is both orange and round. After reading See No Bias by Shankar Vedantam I have learned that many people are unaware their biases. Mahzarin Banaji took a bias test, now known as the Implicit Association Test and her results stated she had a biased for whites over blacks. She didn’t understand her results because she is a minority too. She did an experiment where she had people picking from a list of unknown names. “The experiment showed how subtle cues can cause errors without people 's awareness.” Millions of people have taking the bias test and large majorities of people showed biases, even if they said they had no biases. Bordo and Berger put us in the position to realize we actually do make assumption of thing based off prior knowledge. Both authors argues that we make learning assumption towards images taken away from its originality, but this is because we allow ourselves to do so. This is not something we take the time out and think about; as a result, when viewing an image people might stop and actually question themselves.
Assumptions influence our perceptions because when assumptions are made, it is often the case that there is not enough information for the assumptions to be accurate. Dillard gives an example that relates to this in her essay when she says, “[We] see what [we] expect” (Dillard 20). When an assumption is formed about a person or situation, then things that agree with that assumption is what is looked for, so that is what will be perceived. This may create inaccurate impressions. Another problem with making assumptions is that it is assumed that there is consistency to others’ behavior and often the focus on negative things about others. When it is assumed that there is consistency to others’ behavior, it is assumed that after seeing them act one way once or twice, they will always act like that. (Beebe 77). These examples relate to another idea that Dillard talks about in her essay. Dillard says, “Peeping through my keyhole I see within the range of only about thirty percent of light that comes from the sun…” (21). This agrees with an idea that people tend to ignore information when making perceptions and only looking at a small portion of the big picture and make perceptions based off of that. An example that relates to all of these would be if someone expects a person to be rude, then whenever those two people interact, rude behavior will be all that is looked for and all that is given any thought. People often form perceptions off of assumptions and small pieces of the big picture which oftentimes makes those perceptions that a person might have
I had never recognized a personal bias of mine; however, I am sure it has been with me since before entering this program. My personal bias is against drug addicted caretakers. I have long unconsciously felt like victims of drug addiction somehow cause their own misfortune by being unable to stop abusing a narcotic. Moreover, even deeper than that, I feel as if their inability to take control of their addiction, even after seeing the affects it has on their family and friends, is a sign of selfish and self-centered
For instances, in one study, volunteers were required to stare at a computer screen as different phrases quickly appeared and disappeared without their knowledge. These phrases such as “violent” and “elderly” influenced their minds when they complete different types of tasks, such as writing or walking. Their behaviors changed according to the flashing words because the unconscious mind was affected by it, even though they were unaware of these influences. Since their conscious minds were not able to pick up the words on the screen, they created reasoning with the knowledge they did have. As Daniel Gilbert stated, “ their brains quickly considered the facts they are aware and draw out the same kinds of plausible but mistaken inferences about themselves that an observer would probably draw about them” (131). Daniel Gilbert proves that the unconscious mind takes the knowledge one is aware of and creates a logical reasoning behind it, even if it is not true. When Daniel Gilbert says "mistaken inferences" he means that the person is unaware of the factors that influence one's behavior, thus creating a false sense of understanding. Growing up in a very accepting and forward home, I always found myself to be free of most bias. Having been the target of some racial prejudice in the past, I always told myself that I would make sure nobody else had to feel the same way. While this may be a great way to think, it really only covers the fact that you will not have any explicit bias. What I have realized during the course of this class is that implicit bias often has a much stronger effect on us than we might think, and even the most conscious people can be affected.
Louise Derman-Sparks and Julie Olsen Edwards, authors of Anti-Bias Education: for Young Children and Ourselves, provide a great example of an internal bias that results in unfair judgments. “One example is if you were raised to believe that being prompt is a sign of responsibility, and your family always had a car, then it might be hard for you to comprehend the experience of low-income families who chronically drop their children off late due to unreliable buses (pg. 21).” It is little anecdotes like those that make you evaluate your pure un-bias tendencies against certain social identities.
While people deal with everyday life, a plethora of events is occurring throughout the day. Most people usually do a multitude of actions to resolve these events without thinking as well. This can be anything from trying to get to class as soon as possible, talking to someone that recently was introduced, or doing a kind of tradition at a football game. Cognitive Biases is defined as a systematic pattern of deviation from norm or rationality in judgment, whereby inferences about other people and situations may be drawn in an illogical fashion. This article will talk about a small sample of these situations and clarify what the meaning behind them. Kahneman’s theory’s breaks down human thought into two systems. Our thought processes that are deliberate, rational and analytical are System 2. This type of thought is one that takes effort and time yet can yield a more accurate picture of a situation. The opposite system, System 1, is fast, quick to judge, superficial and automatic. It relies on instinct and first impression of a situation to make judgments. Kahneman explains the balance between the two systems as the equilibrium of one’s conscious and unconscious thoughts. While System 1 offers quick, apparent information about a situation, System 2 works to put the information in the correct context and fix any errors (44). The text defines self-serving bias as the tendency to perceive oneself favorably. This bias leads us to believe that we are immune to the influences that affect the rest of humanity. In the self-serving bias, our successes are attributed to internal causes (effort or ability), while our failures are attributed to external factors (bad luck). Time and again, experimenters have found that people readily accept credit when told they have succeeded, yet attribute failure to such external factors as bad luck or the problem's inherent "impossibility." Imagine getting a promotion. Most of us will feel that this success is due to hard work, intelligence, dedication, and similar internal factors. Self serving bias and clinging to first impressions are two of the common tendencies in interpersonal communication. The basic definition of self serving bias is when others suffer we tend to be much harsh on their problems, on the contrary, if the same situation happens to us, we always blame the problem and think the causation is outside of ourselves. The first impression is not often accurate, but it does a great deal to us to think of others. I have met both of these interpersonal communication common tendencies in my life.
