Growing up in a very accepting and forward home, I always found myself to be free of most bias. Having been the target of some racial prejudice in the past, I always told myself that I would make sure nobody else had to feel the same way. While this may be a great way to think, it really only covers the fact that you will not have any explicit bias. What I have realized during the course of this class is that implicit bias often has a much stronger effect on us than we might think, and even the most conscious people can be affected. One of the best methods I have seen of detecting this bias is Harvard’s IAT, which can pick up on implicit biases across a variety of subjects. The first test I took was the African-America and European-American IAT, which said that I had little to no preference between the two. This result did not surprise me at all, because in my mind there really is no difference between races, only people. I spent a majority of my life living in a very diverse community, and got to experience a variety of cultures. I believe this certainly played a role in my test score, as a person who grew up primarily in one culture might have a hard time seeing how people of other races could be similar to them. It may seem ridiculous that we make decisions based on thoughts that we do not even know we are having, but it is certainly true. This test has really opened my eyes to the fact that although I considered myself very open-minded, even I have a slight bias in some regards. The most important lesson from this is that awareness is the key, and these biases will forever be engrained in our subconscious if we do not take the time to face them. After reading See No Bias by Shankar Vedantam I have learned that many people are unaware their biases. Mahzarin Banaji took a bias test, now known as the Implicit Association Test and her results stated she had a biased for whites over blacks. She didn’t understand her results because she is a minority too. She did an experiment where she had people picking from a list of unknown names. “The experiment showed how subtle cues can cause errors without people 's awareness.” Millions of people have taking the bias test and large majorities of people showed biases, even if they said they had no biases. Prejudice is an issue that cannot be easily avoided in today's society. It has and always will have a huge impact on the discrimination that some people face based on religion, appearance, background, mental/physical disabilities and etc.
It is only human to be biased. However, the problem begins when we allow our bigotry to manifest into an obstacle that hinders us from genuinely getting to know people. Long time diversity advocate, Verna Myers, in her 2014 Ted Talk, “How to overcome our biases? Walk boldly toward them” discusses the implicit biases we may obtain when it comes to race, specifically black men and women. Myers purpose is quite like the cliché phrase “Face your fears.” Her goal is to impress upon us that we all have biases (conscious or unconscious). We just have to be aware of them and face them head on, so that problems such as racism, can be resolved. The Project Implicit, Harvard Education is a non-profit organization that seeks to collect data on an individual’s subconscious chooses. The test that I took was the Race IAT (Implicit Association Test), which measures and shows an individual’s implicit belief and attitudes that one may not be unwilling to admit that they have (Teachman, Nock, 2011). So, this test was an attempt to see if I have biases that I do not really know about. This is interesting and scary at the same time. To have someone basically interpret your thoughts through a series of unrelated responses.
What is racism? The definition given by Merriam Webster’s dictionary is, “a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial difference produce an inherent superiority of a particular race”. From the definition alone we can see that racism and prejudice are horrible and incorrect errors in a person’s thinking that no one would, or should, be proud to admit to having such feelings. Is it true though, that race or prejudicial feelings do not come into consideration at all to such people who profess they truly do not bias towards those of another race or group? A person may be showing signs of modern racism in which they outwardly show and act as if they are an unprejudiced person, while inwardly having negative prejudiced attitudes. Is there any way to really find out if a person has these types of feelings? This is one of the ideas behind the Implicit Associations Test.
Racial bias is a preformed negative opinion or attitude toward a group of persons who possess common physical characteristics including, but not limited to color of skin, eyes, and/ or facial features. The California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory (CCTDI) has several characteristics, including truth seeking and open mindedness (Laird). My score for the implicit association task was that I preferred thin people to fat people. I chose this test because I thought that I would not have a bias, however, after taking this test I realized that I was very biased and more judgmental than I had originally believed. While taking the test, I was asked questions that I had never considered or thought about. I found myself unsure on some questions, and just putting that I was indifferent about the subjects that I did not know how to answer. After taking this test, I feel like I will be more cautious about the way I think about people and how I react to them based on appearance, whether thin or fat.
It is not a big secret that America’s quality of education is sub-par. Without change, the United States will continue to be behind in education. An issue that currently plagues the American education system is gender bias. Gender bias in schools has been addressed in laws, but it still persists in American schools, such as Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and the U.S. code Title 42, Chapter 21 regarding Civil Rights. Both laws attempt to discourage gender bias through the illegality of gender discrimination. Title IX addresses bias in federally funded educational and athletic programs in schools and colleges within the United States. Title 42, Chapter 21 of the U.S. Code prohibits discrimination based on gender, age, race, religion, and other characteristics within a number of settings, including education. Despite these laws, gender bias is still prevalent within American schools. A proposed solution to gender bias is gender segregated classrooms, which has proven to be a popular alternative to co-ed classrooms. Leonard Sax, author of “Six Degrees of Separation: What Teachers Need to Know about the Emerging Science of Sex Differences,” is a leading proponent of single-sex schools. Single-sex schools are not without critics though. So, I was disappointed to see that I prefer Blacks over Whites. On the other hand, it’s not that I support Whites over Blacks.
