In my opinion, prejudice has a very big impact on society all across the country everyday. I do believe that most people have a tendency to let their preconception of others get in the way of and effect their decisions. People tend to make many decisions based on their own bias beliefs about other people. Prejudice can be called by many things such as bias, racism, sexism, discrimination, and many other different things.
We as humans judge others everyday on things we shouldn’t, such as race, sexuality, religion, or any other insecurities. Being bias toward someone is a very negative thing to do to someone no matter how much you dislike them. Many people let their race or religion help them decide on what they are going to do and how they are
going to live their lives. I think prejudice has the biggest impact on African Americans mainly because of slavery. It has been abolished for many years, yet we still discriminate towards other races. Society has a tendency to judge other people because of their prejudice and don’t base their decisions on the facts. Being bias is not just judging one person, it is judging a whole group of people such as the holocaust and how Jewish people were sought out to be terrible people. It can also be discriminating by stereotyping certain groups of people such as only black people can play basketball or all muslims are considered terrorists. Even though there is prejudice everywhere one of the biggest problems we have today is that it is in our jury system. This is such a big deal because people make their decisions based not on what they should be based on which is the facts, but they base it on their own bias thinking. People as a whole need to come together and stop all the discrimination towards each other and just start to be human. Not everyone will always agree with the right thing to do, but we need to make an effort to stop all prejudice. Because prejudice is stupid and should never be the reason you make any decisions in your life. In the end we are all human and we need to treat each other the same and not any different than how we want to be treated.
Prejudice is an issue that cannot be easily avoided in today's society. It has and always will have a huge impact on the discrimination that some people face based on religion, appearance, background, mental/physical disabilities and etc.
It is only human to be biased. However, the problem begins when we allow our bigotry to manifest into an obstacle that hinders us from genuinely getting to know people. Long time diversity advocate, Verna Myers, in her 2014 Ted Talk, “How to overcome our biases? Walk boldly toward them” discusses the implicit biases we may obtain when it comes to race, specifically black men and women. Myers purpose is quite like the cliché phrase “Face your fears.” Her goal is to impress upon us that we all have biases (conscious or unconscious). We just have to be aware of them and face them head on, so that problems such as racism, can be resolved. Prejudice is just a word until a book or movie puts pictures in your mind. In Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry and Mississippi Burning, there are several scenes that have an impact on me. Both stories tell how badly the black families of Mississippi were treated, and they show how they suffered through it and came out the other end with courage and honor. It also tells how unfair the white men were to the blacks, inside and outside of the courtroom. Prejudice is an ugly subject, and is still taught today. The horrible things that the white man did to the colored man make me realize how ignorance certainly is bliss.

Across the nation, millions of Americans of all races turn on the television or open a newspaper and are bombarded with images of well dressed, articulate, attractive black people advertising different products and representing respected companies. The population of black professionals in all arenas of work has risen to the point where seeing a black physician, attorney, or a college professor are becoming more a common sight. More and more black people are holding positions of respect and authority throughout America today, such as Barack Obama, Colin Powell, Condelezza Rice and many other prominent black executives. As a result of their apparent success, these black people are seen as role models for many Americans, despite their race. However, these groups of black people are exceptions to the rule and consist of only a tiny fraction of all black Americans. These black people in turn actually help to reinforce the inequality of black Americans by allowing Americans of other races to focus on their success. A common thought is, "They made it, why can't you do the same?" The direct and truthful answer to that question is Racism.
Prejudice, the act of judging someone based on outward appearance or social standing. In the 1960’s Harper Lee wrote a book called To Kill a Mockingbird, about prejudice and how hard the times were. In To Kill a Mockingbird, there are many examples of prejudice showing how morally wrong it was. Two Ways to Reduce Prejudice Two ways in which prejudice can be reduced are Equal status contact and the pursuit of common goals. Deutsch and Collins (1951) carried out an early study of equal status contact. They compared two kinds of housing projects, one of which was thoroughly integrated with blacks and whites who were assigned houses regardless of their race, and the other was segregated. The residents of both housing projects were intensively interviewed and it was found that both casual and neighbourly contact were greater in the integrated housing with less prejudice among whites towards blacks.
People can be very prejudice. They may even discriminate against you for the color of your skin or maybe even where you’re from. This is why I believe people have a tendency to allow their prejudices to direct their decisions. Which is also shown in the play Twelve Angry Men.
The way a majority group relates to a minority group is affected by any of thier prejudices. As noted by Stewart, "Prejudice is the belief that you can know people because of their race or the country their ancestors were from. Sometimes prejudice causes us to believe we know what someone is like because of his or her sex or religion. Prejudice allows you to think you know somebody without knowing him or her at all!" Prejudice can be caused because of various reasons. Religion, ethnic race and social status are examples of causes of prejudice. Sometimes prejudice is caused by how we are raised. Many times parents pass on prejudice beliefs to their children. A lot people raised in the southern part of the country are prejudice against blacks. In the early to mid 1960’s, prejudice was alive and well in the south. Blacks had their own bathrooms and were forced to ride in the back of city busses. It’s hard to believe that was doing on only 40 years ago. A lot of Middle Eastern countries are very prejudice against women.
If a young girl is walking alone through a park late at night and encounters three senior citizens walking with canes and three teenage boys wearing leather jackets, it is likely that she will feel threatened by the latter and not the former. Why is this so? To start off, we have made a generalization in each case. By stereotyping, we assume that a person or group has certain characteristics. Often, these stereotypical generalizations are not accurate. We are succumbing to prejudice by ?ascribing characteristics about a person based on a stereotype, without knowledge of the total facts?1.
A good example of this is the Baltimore riots, I remember coming to class hearing students talk about how every black person from the hood are criminals because of what the news showed. They didn't even care to know what they were protesting for. Another example is every time I go to a convenience store the clerk always watches me and my friends thinking were stealing. Like I said early being prejudice is without knowledge and reason. Sadly this world is full of people having a negative perspective about others, even if they don't know them. Unfortunately, I’m part of that group that has a personal opinion about a different race or culture.
